I bought RL for Switch and played a few rounds. Impressions:
Gameplay is relatively smooth. Not buttery, but good enough.
Resolution is a bit rough. Hard to see stuff down the pitch.
Playing with joy-con will take some getting used to. Buttons feel cramped.
Holy shit it’s a full-fledged portable Rocket League. Those glorious bastards actually did it!
In my handful of matches, most people seemed relatively skilled. At least what I’d consider Gold/Platinum level on PC. Obviously most of the people diving in initially are not newcomers.
I've been playing on Switch for the afternoon and evening. Doing my placements and some casual. Port's okay but there are a few issues. The framerate is the worst offender. It's not too bad but when it drops frames it seems to drop inputs as well making aerials and fine skills pretty difficult. Half flipping only works about 50% of the time. Apparently Psyonix has promised optimisation so hopefully things will improve. I don't play ranked all that often on PC but I sort of hover around Diamond II. I got placed around Platinum I in 1v1 and 2v2 today after losing a couple from being pretty uncomfortable with the sluggishness. But I'm used to 144 fps and G-Sync on PC so the difference is probably more than average. Still glad to have it on Switch. I sometimes work interstate and I don't own a laptop so it'll be cool to be able to take it with me.
I never got into Rocket League but I picked it up on Switch and put about an hour into it. I suuuuuck, but the game is super fun. I love the cosmetic unlocking system but I am not a big fan of the crates/key thing. I hate when games do that - so it was super awesome to find I could disable that in the options.
Since it is portable I def think I will be playing more, it's so easy to get into a quick match. For 20.00 dollars this is a ridiculous amount of value.
I'm gonna start looking up practice guides and stuff, if you guys have any particular youtube series or whatever that you would suggest I would enjoy that very much.
Something about portability. I always end up sitting on my couch but those 'any-time' moments of this game or that game - and now I gladly include Rocket League into that list, it is just awesome.
I totally feel people on the FPS thing though but I have had to accept the Switch isn't a super powerful machine for the kind of performance we need out of games that were not built for it and I can gloss over the FPS drops as long as they are aren't totally game breaking.
I'm sure psyonix will get it optimized on Switch. It runs on a potato and they had issues when it was released on the Xbone and they got that fixed so I have faith. And yes if you aren't into loot box bullshit they luckily have that option to disable seeing them.
Yeah, I really love all the customization. When I see a ton of player options in the menu I like to believe the devs are considering the players when they make their choices instead of purely on financial decision alone.
The FPS issues on the Switch aren't even that noticeable to me compared to other switch games so I am pretty happy with my 20 dollars. It's crazy how I feel I get more content and game from cheaper indie games than I do the AAA titles out there.
For 20.00 dollars this is a ridiculous amount of value.
You have no idea. This is the third time I've bought this game, and have probably purchased over $100 worth of keys, and I still feel like I've gotten more than my money's worth.
my main concern is the fact that those poor joy cons are so frail--when you start getting intense into the game you start to be pretty hard on your controllers (i am anyway hehe)

Yeah, that was one of the biggest things I noticed while playing last night, I felt like I was just squeezing and pounding the hell out of those things, more so than any game I've played on the Switch so far. There were several times I accidentally mashed multiple buttons where I never had that issue with an XBox Gamepad.
I have 1900 hours on PC and I've never bought a single key so I basically felt like I owed Psyonix. Of course I wanted to buy it on Switch anyway.
Did my Standard placement and got Plat III which was nice, unexpected. Lost 1 or 2, can't remember. Ranked kind of sucks when you have to solo queue all the time.
Hallowed Faith, I can recommend a few things to check out. SubParButinHD make some things that are entertaining as well as helpful. Kronovi's tutorials are clear and easy to understand. The thing that helped me improve the most was watching Squishy Muffinz though. He's my absolute favourite RL player and he is a legend kid. His commentary on his own games is without ego and his analysis is so clear-headed. I didn't really watch anything until after I hit Rocketeer so I can't recommend anything specifically tailored to beginners but I feel like I might have improved more quickly if I'd been watching Squishy from the start. Even though he's playing at the highest level. Anyway, hope that helps.

Bought it for Switch this morning and only had time to mess around in free play to get used to the controls. Performance isn’t amazing but it’s rocket league in my hands which is the number one thing I was hoping for when the Switch was announced.
Now, how do I play with people on my Switch profile?

On the subject of tutorials: I actually went through the BadPanda.gg tutorials around the time the world cup kept bringing the site up. It has a quite a bit of good info, and one of the best kickoff tutorials you can find. I think it would be great for anyone platinum or lower to go through -- most lessons are just a couple minute video followed by a training pack that helps focus on elements the video covered, and it remembers your last lesson so when you go back it just starts right where you were.

I have no friends on Switch.
Which brings up the question, is cross platform open on the switch? As they have been working on trying to get cross platform party to work for hopefully a future update.

Switch is cross platform -- PC, Xbox, and Switch can all get into a match together. All the Switch exclusive cars show up as Octanes.
They've been testing the new party system quite a bit in the past several weeks so it's probably going live in the next big update or two.
Meanwhile I think people can still create private matches and just share the servername/password and get different platforms to play with each other. No matchmaking though.

So I got internet, haven't tested RL yet but browser stuff is loading better than I feared. So possibly I'll still be able to play.
But this poses another question: should I bite the bullet and move from keyboard to pad? I have been a primarily PC gamer for so long that keyboard and mouse are very comfortable for me. Most games where people insist keyboard doesn't work I find keyboard perfect for, but RL might be the rare exception. Having to have a button to rotate in midair is tricky - am I right in thinking that on pad you can use the second joystick to be a lot easier to control?
And that all being said, does anyone know where I can get a wired XBox controller that I can plug into my computer? I only have a wireless controller. Or is there any adapter I can use to transmit my wireless controller's inputs to my PC?

I'm sure there are some people who use unconventional dual analogue control schemes but I'd say the vast majority use the left stick for both ground and air control as you are never doing both at once. I guess you could do some cool stuff like turning and rotating in opposite directions in the air. But I don't think you would have much advantage in real situations, if any. I guess you could map dodge to the right stick so you could flip independently of the direction you're pushing the left stick. But camera control is important too and you really don't want to not be able to check what's happening around you, not just in front of you.

Actually that leads to a follow up question, is there a way to keybind that so you can control in midair on keyboard without holding a button?

If you are really thinking about changing to controller do it sooner rather than later. I have a friend who tried it when he was several hundred hours into the game and it was very hard for him and he eventually had to go back to KBAM. He's still a great player with KBAM.
There are wireless adapters for both the 360 and the XB1 controllers for PC. I currently play with a wireless 360 controller on PC and it works great.

If you just mean air-roll, then yep! I even was under the impression that was default controls for Q/E but it's been a while since I've used KBaM -- just look in the control bindings for specific Left and Right air roll buttons. It ended up being how I prefer to play with a controller once they let that be an option for every console.
Also if you're using an Xbox One controller you just need a regular micro-USB cable to plug it in to the PC. I usually use AmazonBasics cables just because they're cheap and have a pretty tight connection.
Some versions of the Xbox One controller also use Bluetooth so that's another option if yours supports it.

So yeah my connection at my new home is good enough to play, albeit with a small touch of lag. At least so long as I'm the only one using the internet.
I'm already frustrated by teammates not trying to play a team game, which is like the only thing I have going for me, so would anyone possibly want to play?

So can filthy casuals still play this game on pc and have any fun, or is it all people who are good now?

After having played some placement matches in competitive solo (which I didn't even realize was a thing until last night), I can promise you there are still many terrible players.
