I'm gonna be 100% honest with you
I am terrified of going into doubles with a rando
That's just because I'm so damn pretty ;-)

Yup, quit playing last night because I was getting sick of all the randomly slowing down/stopping

Last week I was playing purely on US East for ranked because the european ranked servers were doing this every single game.
So I'm going to say it's potentially a server issue on Psyonix's end. Maybe struggling to keep up with demand again?
After losing the first one by one and the second in over-time, I took particular delight in thrashing them 6-2 in the third one, forcing a rage quit from one of them and having the other quit to menu after the game.
Honestly, I don't think that has that much to do with ping. I think that's more symptomatic of packet loss. I've played with 100+ ping on the US servers and it's still been smooth as butter, even more so than it is at 40ish ping on EU servers.
Turning off cross play can help though, but it'll take longer for you to match-make.
Yeah, that'll do.
Strange, it's also bizarre that lag impacts this game so heavily, it's either elastic city or nothing at all.
What seems to happen is that physics calculations/updates are done on both the client (your side) and the server, and then checks to see if they are in sync. If it drops a bunch of packets somewhere (most likely server-side due to load issues) and the check is inconsistent, you (and everyone from your viewpoint) get synced back to your last position/trajectory known by the server. If it stays synced, you get a really smooth experience, but sometimes you see someone "hit" the ball, only for it to go through the person and continue on its way.
Is this a game lag issue, or is something going on with the controller signal? It doesn't seem to matter which controller I use, but I've also seen similar input lag in a few other games (typically not AAA games, for whatever reason). Thoughts?
Yeah, that's lag. Super frustrating when it happens.
If you play the offline modes like the season or exhibition mode you won't get any of that.

If you get hit by lag you can go to the link below and report the details and what server it was on in order to help them fix it

I would argue that you're not playing enough (you're posting after all) ;-)
Also, ranked up in 3v3 to silver!

It seems lag and disconnects only happen when you're winning.
My first goal was scored while reversing from over the half line. To be honest I was absolutely hammered into that position by a teammate and it had nothing to do with me...
"Calculated"
It almost makes up for every other time my team is absolute shit.
I had a ranked 2v2 match like that last night. This guy (or girl maybe, I have no idea) and I were just completely in sync, and we wiped the floor with the other team. We were setting up shots for each other, totally trusting each other to guard while the other got into position, always knew who was defending and who was pushing forward. I was really sad when the match ended and I couldn't keep playing with him since it was ranked.

Honestly, I'm fine the way it is. The times it actually matters are pretty few and far between, and I think "keep it in the air" is a perfectly good restriction that gives you a fighting chance to get that clutch goal at the end. (I'd be OK if the game just ended when time expired, but I think the current implementation adds a good layer of desperation to score that final goal)
One interesting thing from this I didn't realize is that the cars apparently all have different hitboxes. I just assumed that despite the different models and stuff that the hitboxes themselves were all identical, so as to keep everything balanced and on an even playing field. He said the differences are subtle enough that it shouldn't make much of a difference either way, but I've gotta thing at some higher skill levels that certain cars would be preferred over others.

I'm not upset about it. I would just like it.
Right on the cusp of having silver in all 3 ranked modes.
there's some handling differences too for things like e-brake turns (maybe air control during aerials too, not sure on this one)
