3v3 is definitely better than 2v2 for playing with randoms. If you get a bad teammate in 2v2 you are completely hosed, in 3v3 you can potentially get one terrible teammate and still do kind of ok.

Agree 100%. I had a couple games with a specific teammate last night that was playing pretty poorly, but we were able to win anyway.

Also, it turns out that when you play late on sunday night and there's only 1300 people in the playlist, you tend to play with the same people multiple times in a row.

I've had wayyyyy better luck getting competent teammates in ranked 2v2 than I have in 3v3

I'm gonna be 100% honest with you

I am terrified of going into doubles with a rando

Yup, quit playing last night because I was getting sick of all the randomly slowing down/stopping

Couple weeks ago had no issues playing with groups internationally, even with higher pings lag would only manifest with the occasional weird ball hit. One week ago cross region play started getting a bit shaky and frustrating. Now even in local region play games where everyone has green ping I'm often getting game breaking lag with all cars warping and juttering all over the place

Still haven't seen that at all on my end, thankfully, even when I get shoved into a game on the Euro servers.

Every time I go flying dramatically past the ball, barely missing what would have been a sure goal, I play this in my head:

Last week I was playing purely on US East for ranked because the european ranked servers were doing this every single game.

So I'm going to say it's potentially a server issue on Psyonix's end. Maybe struggling to keep up with demand again?

I'm not touching Ranked again until they set ping restrictions, bouncing around, seeing the ball get shot in to the goal and then teleport out as if nothing happened is complete bullshit.

Had my first run-in with rando shitheads. Various comments along the lines of "you love big cocks", spelled out with spaces to avoid the censoring, racist language and "DavidThrax, more like David Anthrax" which was actually pretty funny. Also "I hate you so much", which lacked in originality.

After losing the first one by one and the second in over-time, I took particular delight in thrashing them 6-2 in the third one, forcing a rage quit from one of them and having the other quit to menu after the game.

Honestly, I don't think that has that much to do with ping. I think that's more symptomatic of packet loss. I've played with 100+ ping on the US servers and it's still been smooth as butter, even more so than it is at 40ish ping on EU servers.

Turning off cross play can help though, but it'll take longer for you to match-make.

Yeah I've had 20-30 ping games where it was the equivalent of being in a rubber band factory. Ping doesn't matter when the server shits the bed.

Just played my first match. 3v3. I was on blue team. We were losing 3-1 with ~30 seconds left. Then, I scored, someone else scored to tie it, and I assisted on the game winner in OT.

    Yeah, that'll do.

Strange, it's also bizarre that lag impacts this game so heavily, it's either elastic city or nothing at all.

What seems to happen is that physics calculations/updates are done on both the client (your side) and the server, and then checks to see if they are in sync. If it drops a bunch of packets somewhere (most likely server-side due to load issues) and the check is inconsistent, you (and everyone from your viewpoint) get synced back to your last position/trajectory known by the server. If it stays synced, you get a really smooth experience, but sometimes you see someone "hit" the ball, only for it to go through the person and continue on its way.

So I'm not sure if this is a lag issue, but *something* seems to be going on. Periodically when I'm playing (on PS4) the game just...doesn't respond to my controller input, or responds weirdly. This usually manifests in like not jumping when I hit the button, or steering stops responding and I either don't turn or suddenly drive in a circle for no apparent reason.

Is this a game lag issue, or is something going on with the controller signal? It doesn't seem to matter which controller I use, but I've also seen similar input lag in a few other games (typically not AAA games, for whatever reason). Thoughts?

Yeah, that's lag. Super frustrating when it happens.

If you play the offline modes like the season or exhibition mode you won't get any of that.

So yeah the lag issues are certainly not isolated, and it turns out the devs have implemented a lag reporting tool webpage in order to try and isolate the issues and problem servers

If you get hit by lag you can go to the link below and report the details and what server it was on in order to help them fix it

Also, ranked up in 3v3 to silver!

And that was short-lived. Had a few bad games and got bumped back down to bronze. On the bright side, I did have this epic save in one of them.

I had one of those matches in which we were doing fantastic, I scored two fantastic goals and one of them a spectacular aerial, the third one was beautiful, the ball flew in to the goal and then nothing, it just sat there. And then everyone got disconnected and booted to the menu screen.

It seems lag and disconnects only happen when you're winning.

    Purchased this on Steam today.

My first goal was scored while reversing from over the half line. To be honest I was absolutely hammered into that position by a teammate and it had nothing to do with me...

I played a string of 3v3 matches with two randoms last night, and we just clicked as a team. We were 7-1 in that stretch, with two wins by forfeit (after going up 2-0 in <30 seconds in both), while our only loss was followed by 2 rematches against that same team where we won by 4+ goals.

It almost makes up for every other time my team is absolute shit.

I would like them to add logic that basically says if the ball is touching the goal in any possible form the match won't end yet even if it is on the ground.

I had a ranked 2v2 match like that last night. This guy (or girl maybe, I have no idea) and I were just completely in sync, and we wiped the floor with the other team. We were setting up shots for each other, totally trusting each other to guard while the other got into position, always knew who was defending and who was pushing forward. I was really sad when the match ended and I couldn't keep playing with him since it was ranked.

Honestly, I'm fine the way it is. The times it actually matters are pretty few and far between, and I think "keep it in the air" is a perfectly good restriction that gives you a fighting chance to get that clutch goal at the end. (I'd be OK if the game just ended when time expired, but I think the current implementation adds a good layer of desperation to score that final goal)

One interesting thing from this I didn't realize is that the cars apparently all have different hitboxes. I just assumed that despite the different models and stuff that the hitboxes themselves were all identical, so as to keep everything balanced and on an even playing field. He said the differences are subtle enough that it shouldn't make much of a difference either way, but I've gotta thing at some higher skill levels that certain cars would be preferred over others.

Slowly getting better at 1v1. Definitely all about positioning. If I'm not lined up for a shot, I'm hanging back just enough to get to my goal before my opponent can.

Right on the cusp of having silver in all 3 ranked modes.

there's some handling differences too for things like e-brake turns (maybe air control during aerials too, not sure on this one)
