The man was a programming god, and a great face for the company. And, I'm sure his was the hand that kept worries about the bottom line away from development efforts. He will be missed.
This whole thing is too fucking surprising what the hell?!? GRAH!
May not agree with every decision he made but goddamn dude has a hell of a legacy.
Rest in peace Mr Iwata

This sucks on so many levels. Many of the changes to Nintendo, post Yamauchi, I can put directly on Iwata's shoulders. He was the one who saw that getting into an arms race with Microsoft and Sony would be a losing prospect. He held the company together, saw talent where it was needed, and...
fuck fuck fuck.
Also, fuck searching for collaboration and seeing stories about how the Nintendo stockholders want him dead.

I havent owned a nintendo console in a long time, but I still have muchos respect for Iwata. He was the ceo who believed in delivering what they felt was correct, not buckling to pressure to do stuff for the bottom line, like the stockholders kept demanding.
RIP You awesome man.
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.
Lately I had been worried. Damn that sucks.... I didn't always care for the way he ran the company but he was a such a goofy, charming guy. He'll be missed.
I have a podcast now. It's about video games and anime!Find it here.

Oh god...
I am gonna have to stay away from Splatoon for a bit. I don't think I could take the Iwata tributes that are going to show up without getting teary-eyed.

Aaah, I wonder if it's alright to admit this? Well, I guess the proverbial statute of limitations is up, so I'll tell you, but my actual last work on programming happened when I was working as the General Manager of Corporate Planning at Nintendo. Something happened and the Gamecube version of Super Smash Brothers didn't look like it was going to make its release date so I sort of did a code review for it (Wry Laugh).
At the time, I went to HAL Labs in Yamanashi and was the acting head of debugging. So, I did the code review, fixed some bugs, read the code and fixed more bugs, read the long bug report from Nintendo, figured out where the problem was and got people to fix those...all in all I spent about three weeks like that. And, because of that, the game made it out on time.
And that was the last time that I worked as an engineer 'in the field'. I was right there, sitting by programmers, in the trenches, reading code together, finding the bugs, and fixing them together.
Looking it up, dude got a pretty damn rare cancer and the survival rate of even the most ideal detection and location is still awful. Dude had to know he was on borrowed time and he still kicked all kinds of ass.
I know he said that he didn't attend E3 because he didn't feel like he needed too since Nintendo weren't showing off a new piece of hardware and because he had to prepare for the annual shareholder's meeting a week later, but maybe he didn't go because of his health issues after all.

I'm going to miss Iwata asks so much and all the goofy little things he did just for fun.

I hope Nintendo continues this stuff. Iwata's personal stance and charm did a lot to humanize them. They didn't always give fans what they wanted, but they always explained themselves. The directs are one of the smartest things Nintendo (or any game company) has ever done.

I don't know what to say. What horrible and completely unexpected news. I haven't been a fan of a number of his decisions but regardless, he always seemed like an incredibly nice guy and had an undeniably huge impact on the industry, on both the development and business sides. A huge loss to the gaming industry.

He got treatment for that bile duct growth and I assumed he was completely cured. He did look noticeably thinner after his treatment, but still.
Man, this sucks.
wtf.
RIP Iwata.
Rest in Peace Iwata-san.
