Mainly it's that the folks who have been running it don't go to AUS, and the companies that are contracted to do it are also in the US. I'm sure if someone wanted to do an AUS one they could, but it's the sort of thing where you need significant buy-in from the community to do it. Each run is around 200 coins minimum to make them affordable.
If you're super interested in making it happen for Aus though, I encourage you to contact the organizer for prime, SkeleVader, as I'm sure he'd give you all the information on how to make it go.
I've been buying the coins since... East 2011 I think, since I'm pretty sure that was the first available one for a PAX I have been to. I'll post a picture of my collection if I think of it, but it has been a tradition to buy every one.
I would love for Aus to start a coin and I'm available for any info.
I also have extra of some of the coins and pins we did if anyone is interested.
Can you give a general idea of what's required, costs etc?
With most companies your cost will be a die fee (about $300), the price of the coin (about $10 each), and shipping (anywhere in the US is about $6).
This will all vary on what company you use and if you have them process and ship the orders or you order the large batch of coins and distribute yourself.
This year for Prime we are testing a company that has no die fee and is offering the coins cheeper than our previous distributer. If you used them and shipped all the coins at once to Aus you could probably do it for a reasonable price.
The hidden cost in this process is the time dedication it takes to get it done.
for this current PAX Prime, the community is trying out Kiddercorp as an alternative to PCC. PCC has been good to us, but it's always good to have other options and try other things.
You can just google "Austraila Challenge Coins" or something similar.
I would get ahold of our Kiddercorp, or Pheonix Challenge Coins first and see what they can do for you. I think I have posted their contact info before, but I can PM it to you later if interested. They are just the middlemen so they might have a mint in Austraila they can use to get the coins made.
Might check out the other coin thread to see what style/size we might be after before I contact them. Are all the previous pax coins sticking to the same size/coating btw, or have they varied? 2D design or 3D?

Coin size is 1.75" and the finish for all Prime coins has been Antique Bronze while East has been Silver. South also used an Antique Bronze finish.
Design uses both 2D & 3D elements but has never used color.
Here is Kiddercorp's email: [email protected] contact is Alex , goes by akidderz here on the forum.

Admittedly only briefly skimming through the thread while showing my interest. I do want one, but is there an actual "challenge" tied to these so called challenge coins or...?

The detailed link is posted above, but the short version is you "challenge" a friend at a bar to see if they are carrying their coin. If they are, you buy a round. If they are not, they buy.
I personally just use them in games rather than the traditional bar challenge.
Just a heads up that I probably won't be able to organise these myself before PAX AUS, so if anyone else wants to take the lead feel free to let us know.

I guess a PAX AUS coin would have to be solid gold than?
