Oh man, that's certainly dream killing advice. I do /not/ find typing on an iPad conducive to the creative flow (aside from the creative flow of cusses). Then again, I'm a paper and pen kinda guy
Actually, Gabriel, many people find it considerably more difficult to type on a touch screen than on a physical keyboard. I hope this information drives you to rethink your misled opinion.
Shouldn't it be oneirocide? Sure, somnio is valid I guess (all things relating to the god of sleep Somnus) but in terms of science somnus deals with sleep (insomnia etc) while oneiros is used for dreams.

"Somnium" means dream. Not necessarily ambition, though. "Oneiro-" has some usage in english, but this type of term is cobbled together more or less haphazard.
The problem here is that Gabe is in a similar position to the sales associate who presents the customer with a device based not on their needs, but upon the size of the commission; in this case, the criteria being prioritized is to minimize or escape his ongoing inconvenience/obligation.
A more reasonable solution - though of course, reason is the enemy of both hyperbole and comedy - is to provide the requested device, but inform the recipient (who is, I presume, a responsible and capable adult) that one will not be providing technical support, and that the aforementioned adult will have to either solve their own problems or seek aid from other parties.
Love Tycho's face in that last panel, he's like "Hmm... Okay I see your point. You're still a cunt, you're just a SMALLER cunt than you were 30 seconds ago."

IPad with a keyboard case from Anker or Logitech + Pages or Microsoft Word is a perfect portable writing device.
And far less prone to falling apart in a handful of years.
I'm with Gabe. Ever since my Mom got an iPad my tech support time diminished rapidly AND she was using it more than she ever did her desktop.

Let's play Mario Kart or something...
A tablet + a good wireless keyboard is actually a better word processor than most laptops. Since I hate chiclet-style keyboards, I got a Surface Pro 2 and a Filco Majestouch Minila Air Bluetooth mechanical keyboard with Cherry MX Red keyswitches. I couldn't ask for a better setup, really.
I bought my mother a Surface Pro 3 to replace her 15 year old Dell Desktop running XP. After three months, she phoned me to say that a local youth had kindly agreed to "upgrade" her desktop at great expense so now she "has a computer again".
My mother recently switched from a 5+ y.o. Dell laptop running WinXP to a 13" MacBook Air.
Every time it asks her for admin credentials, or to install an update, I get the phone call. The one that starts, "I think someone's hacking into my computer..."
I've been off the forums for awhile, so apologies if this should be a new thread or something. In Tycho's post related to this topic, he shows the new limited edition pin for Automata. A world I'm a big fan of (support the Kickstarter!) Anyways, the Clocktalk translates to "Regal Swangee" to anyone interested. The blank lines indicate vowels depending on thickness and the rest is classic matching. The one thing I'd like to know is way back when Silverside was released, Carl talks to another 'bot that offers to give Regal "the tour" but it doesn't look like he's speaking Clocktalk. Maybe it's clickwise proper, but it'd be nice to know. I'll have to start hunting through the comics again to see what else I can spot and translate.
I got bad news for Gabriel, he will not be getting fewer calls by giving his dad an ipad than if he got him a laptop. To older people, mobile is an even newer more alien interface than the currently 15 year old desktop interface.
I had a recent conversation with my dad about his suspicion that his iphone has a virus because there is all sorts of random characters showing up in his notepad app. I looked at it, asked him if he locks his phone when he puts it in his pocket or just leaves it on and drops it in to which he said, he doesn't turn off the screen. So his virus was just the notepad app equivalent of butt dialing. This is just one of the more unusual versions of, why isn't my app working, I can't connect to the wifi network, set up my email app, etc.
I receive more questions from my mom and dad about phones and tablets than I do about windows xp and windows 7 computers that they use. Even if they get confused on those, at least they have 10+ years of staring at the same arrangement of icons on a laptop and have a chance of not calling me.

A few uses of the ol' www.lmgtfy.com have helped reduce those kinds of calls for me. I get them occasionally still, but try to encourage them to learn to fish. Of course, this depends entirely on one's family and as Quid has said, in some cases...

My mother, who is hugely tech-phobic, and my father, who is the literal opposite, both do all their work -- which involves significant amounts of both short and long-form writing -- on iPads.
If you look at the side ads for the site regarding the new t-shirt, you can also map the number 3 if you want to update your translation table. Do you happen to know if a font set is released somewhere for this? That'd be pretty sweet.

Cool, thanks. Updated. No font set that I know of, since we don't know all the letters yet.

Needless to say I beat her to death with a log.
Did you forget to get her a start menu replacement?
My adoptive aunt only ever played solitaire on her aging Gateway. Eventually she started asking me to come over and 'fix' it whenever it 'broke' which almost always meant a simple defrag but at some point someone else convinced her to upgrade despite my telling her she didn't need to.
So what does she upgrade to? A macbook pro...to play solitaire and browse the web on. Meanwhile the guy who sat and helped her deal with all her computer woes for years is still stuck with the computer I've had since 2006.
We've been discussing Clickwise over in Pinny Arcade. I like what we've managed to assemble so far, although it's naggingly inconsistent (or at least the design rationale isn't obvious to me) and of course, incomplete. Quit being a teasing whore, Jerry.

He's giving Gabe the ol' stinkeye

This will never, ever, not once ever work.
