I was able to talk to the bar man...I had to toss a grenade in to injure the guy that says hello. I was then able to move in and talk to him personally because he still hadn't moved. Fuck now I have to find a way to do it without pissing off Duty.

Seems like everyone in the town would praise you for killing Mr Welcome Wagon. They most likely hear his little spiel more than even you do.
Am I out of practice in FPS games, or is it near impossible to hit anything in this game?
I picked it up earlier, and its pretty cool so far, I'm on the second mission.
That's one of the biggest turn-offs for people trying out the game. They took a more "realistic" approach to the guns and ammo; basically shooting from the hip (normal view) as opposed to using the iron sights will be a lot less accurate. Not to mention the guns in the beginning just straight up suck something awful. You'll eventually get an assault rifle which should be an improvement.
And there's a mod you can download, posted somewhere in this thread, that improves the gun and ammo qualities to make it more accurate. Downside to this is that enemies get the same improvements, so they become a lot more accurate as well.

This is probably the feature I like the most. It's a blast bringing up the iron sights and getting a few good shots in. And worrying about how much ammo I'm expending is cool too, keeps in feel with the atmosphere.
I just press my use key ("e" for me, I think "f" by default) a bunch of times and the barman comes closer. I don't know if "e" actually does anything, though, or if he just takes a while to walk over.
Quick question: does anyone know where I can find 7.62x54 ammunition? I'm trying to get ammo for this sweet sniper I stole but the only ammo I've ever found for it was on the guy who was carrying it, and I've only seen one guy carrying it. I really don't want to have to ditch this and settle for something else as it's a fine weapon. I've checked the Bar, the Freedom camp, the dude at Yan-whatever, and the vendor at the beginning of the game. None of them have it .
I've had the same 2 clips (22rounds) since I picked up the rifle, and later found one body that had another 8 rounds on it. It's in insanely small supply, from what I've seen. I just make sure I'm picky with my shots: only using it when I have to take someone out too far away for my assault rifle, and then only when I have a decently clear shot. If anyone knows of a spot or Stalker I can find some on, do tell
There should be a number of Monolith soldiers around the Brain Scorcher base up the road from the Red Forest who have that rifle and the corresponding ammo. I presume that you got the rifle from one of the Monolith soldiers to begin with. The other option is to install one of these two ammo mods that gives the traders a wider variety of ammo:
The latter mod is adjusted so you can't get ammo for the better weapons from the first trader and shit like that, but I don't find it to be an issue if he's got 7.62 rounds or gauss gun ammo because you won't have those guns until much later in the game anyway. It is convienient for him to have them in stock for those couple trips back to Cordon you have to make late in the game though, which is why I prefer the first mod I linked because it gives all the traders pretty much all the different ammo types.

The stock weapon properties are not particuarly realistic though. There's no reason for three different assault rifles that use the same ammunition to have wildly different damage and accuracy. The early guns are completely unrealistically inaccurate and weak. I use the Realism Pro mod which adjusts both the guns and the ammunition based on their real world properties.

I ended up finding a sniper I prefer more. I forget what it's called, but it's either the Vintar or V-something. It's only slightly weaker than the other gun, far more accurate, is full-auto, silenced, and supposedly doesn't have a muzzle flash. I love it. It's lighter, too, and my upgraded Big Ben uses the same ammo.
The accuracy didn't bother me... except for how with alot of supposed 'sniper rifles' you can be full crouched scope aiming at a guy not too far away and it takes 3 to 4 shots for the bullet to actually go into his head.
is that realism!??!?
And then when you get the gauss gun you are like "ah yeah, now I remember what its like playing a normal fps."

Depends on a few things.
Is it,
A. One of the first rifles in the game? -those are weak and don't do much damage
B. are you simply too far away? -bullets do fall down after a while, so it's likely you're hitting his toes and not his head.
C. Maybe you're not that good a shot? -it is likely that you suxor

well, when i started my new game after completing it, patching and stuff, i came out of the blocks with some modified sniper rifle in my hands. That thing is deadly accurate to pretty-much any range (no, not a gauss gun). There's a slight drop off at extreme distances, but otherwise, it was my headshot machine. That was, until i ran out of ammo for it, and no traders sell what i need:( guess who's going to mod that in..
if the weapon is the Vintar or VLA stuff, there's ammo for it sold by the Duty trader. You go towards the duty general, then take a right past the checkpoint. He's in a building.
Wait, the 'first' Brain Scorcher? By any chance do you mean the facility at Yantar? If so, you have a bit longer to go, though you can do the Guide thing right after Yantar if you've been diligent in tracking Strelok so far.
If so, yeah, it could take a while if you run into trouble north of the warehouses. If not - if you mean the actual Brain Scorcher - then you're only a few hours, tops, from the end of the game. Things get more straightforward from Pripyat onward.
Oh, right. I got confused. I thought you meant the Brain Scorcher that prevents you from reaching Pripyat. If you're at Lake Yantar and dealing with the zombie making thing, you're only about halfway. If you've made it through the Red Forest and shut down the real Brain Scorcher, you've got about 2 hours to go. Once you finish the Red Forest and shut down the Brain Scorcher, you will want to head back to Cordon and talk to Guide.

So is this game stable yet, or should I wait a month or two?
It's incredibly stable in Vista. I haven't had it crash yet, and it never crashes while alt-tabbing. I don't really consider this instability because it causes no problems, but the game always crashes when I close it normally. All I have to do is click "close program" and STALKER shuts down without causing an instability elsewhere.
There is some stuttering occasionally (more than just random load points), but it's not too bad and I encounter that in most games, probably because I have XP drivers installed on Vista.

Incredibly stable for you translates to incredibly buggy for me.
I had to install an unofficial memory leak patch just so I could enjoy DX9 and dynamic lighting with my 8800GTX.

I guess it should be said that while my hardware is fairly high end (7800gt, x2 4200+), it's all old enough to have good drivers out, even for Vista.
NPP was a bitch, until I took the gun all monolith inside use (the one with the included grenadelauncher and the 20 rounds magazine) - that took care of them fucker for good. I got the "rich" ending, as well as the really good ending and the one where I help preserving the zone". Loved the expression on Streloks face when he said "I want to be rich"
so, i don't know where that trader is in the Duty base (not the barman), but i've found someone that looks promising, near one of the exits. The only problem is, it's flanked by the fun guards telling me i can't pass. Then they shoot me. I've already forgotten what part of the game it is that'll get them to let me past, so i'm just gonna have to wait to get my hands on some sniper ammo.
In other news, i was trekking back up to Cordon after completing some missions, in the middle of the night. I was strolling past that bandit-populated farm-like-place on the left (where you have to rescue the guy right at the start), and thought i'd have a look over there with my binoculars. Lo and behold, about 6 or 7 bandits are on the move, heading out towards the bridge. So i sit and watch, and see them start firing on something. I then wander off to meet a pair of neutrals sat under the bridge, a rookie and a stalker, right as the bandits start to attack. So together we fend off an assault, while a bunch of dogs and boars chase each other through anomalies behind us. Then we part ways, as an awesome lightning storm kicks off in the distance, lighting up the whole area.

you get a contact from the bar keeper after doing some mission, then the guards let you in. The trader is located to the right of the entrance... I think. You gotta walk a bit through an area that seems un-populated then he points a gun at your face. When he calms down you can buy some treats. Not the best sales person but he's not bad.
to the right of the main entrance when you first enter the base? And which exit is it those guards are blocking. I'm trying to remember now, 'cos i should be able to get into Agroprom problem-free, and i know i've gone into the Freedom base already, and i can't think what else it is they're blocking off.
Duty actually also has a special trader similar to the Freedom guy, he's located to the right of the entrance to the bunker where the general is. To the far right, actually, i think he's called sergeant whatsoever - also sells ammo and weapons like the freedom guy, only warshaw pact models (obokan, akm, and corresponding ammo)
edit: dagnabit, i don't think i even ever spoke to the leader of Duty, maybe. I really didn't explore much on my first play through
so ok, if you stick right you'll spot him in a room with windows. There's a little stone walkway leading to him I think.
and you don't need to talk to the leader, just make sure that you have the mission to talk to him. It's either from the bar or the scientist after one of the main quests.
So i just had a look at all the wish granter endings. Personally I 'accepted' the other option in the alternate route of the end of the game, then, reloaded my game and got the good ending. I really like how all those wish endings are bittersweet, or just plain funny (riches). I'm tempted to load up my old game, take that route and see what ending I would of gotten.

Is still not out yet.
This makes me sad.
Not very far. You just have Pripyat and Chernobyl NPP to go. Might want to head back to the Cordon first though. It's worth it to speak to "Guide".

Also, i finished reading Roadside Picnic last night, very good book and highly recommended, if a little unlike what i'm used to by way of sci-fi.
