After X18, most of the rest of the monsters and scripted jump moments are relatively tame. Still scary, sure - especially in the village in the warehouses - but nothing can quite match how... they make their first appearance.
X16 is less about being scary (snorks aside) and more about being as creepy and gloomy as is physically possible. I mean, look at this:
If it said get the fuck out any louder, you could hear it through the picture.
Hmmm, it's almost like they drained all the colors but blood...
I can't wait till my copy gets here and I too, can piss my pants.

I had a nightmare last night about the Red Forest and the bunker.
You have to go into options and bind the 'turn on' option to a button, then use it to turn the car on and run over people who have better weapons than you.

I was freaking out, especially because in my game, once I blasted my way through the gates of the above-ground facility, nothing attacked me for a good 5 minutes as I slowly creeped around. Then the screen started to change and there were enemies everywhere.
Again, forget about faction wars and other crap; give me more intense atmosphere!
God, the music that plays once you approach x16 is amazing, too. It's been a while since I've played the game, and honestly I was very annoyed with it most of the time.
But those laboratories and facilities are so fucking great, I want to reinstall it. I should try Oblivion Lost, but those giant zombie hordes that appear sometimes don't look too appealing.

All creature will die and all the things will be broken. That's the law of samurai.
I wonder if STALKER is worth playing on the easiest settings for those that get annoyed with it but want to see the atmosphere. I know most of the problems people have don't involve game difficulty, but it might help speed through the issues.

See, this is something that made me buy the game.

Question time: is there a mod that just adds the Blowouts from OL? Or is there a way to get taht specific feature out of OL and put it into the vanilla game? I tried playing OL but I just can't stand all the changed textures and different art style it forces on me.
Gonna repost this in hopes that someone answers because aaahh OL and the novice stalkers wearing bright green and red jackets do not want
but man they just have that insane "I'm gonna getcha" look
what's your usual method of taking 'em down? I pretty much keep a shotgun just to deal with them and the snorks.

I found shotguns to be the best way to take them down. Guns do squat shit and you'll waste half your ammo trying to take them down with a rifle. Also, snorks move so fast you need something with a bit of scatter to get them.

I saw STALKER for really god damn cheap the other day, anyone reading this going "Uhm" and fucking "ah" has no excuse not to pic it up and enjoy the shit out of it.
ZOmbies tend to go down quite quick to grenades, then of course you wish you han't used your only grenade when you turn around and see a swarm of rats, cats, dogs, boars and bloodsuckers coming to say hello. They say hello with pain and death.
but man they just have that insane "I'm gonna getcha" look

Headshot from afar with the vintar bc and they die permenantly.
Hitting them center of mass takes about 4 shots, but if you have the distance, theyll never even see you before theyre down.

Headshots are the Zone approved way to dealing with Zombies.

So I got this for really cheap on Ebay now that my computer can comfortably run it.
I'm getting ready to install. What patches should I go with? I want my first playthrough to be as true to the original game as possible, but with bugfixes. Should I just stick with 1.0003 or should I add some mods on to that?

I have the 1.0005 patch installed and it seems ok.
Mods installed:
float32 (graphics update, makes the game look nicer)
detection mod (makes it so enemies dont zero in on you from 200 miles away)
vendor repair mod (so some of the vendors can repair your stuff)
I think thats about it for mine. I wanted to keep it pretty close to the base game, too.

Get the mod pack Stolls has in his sig. You'll be good to go when you read the readme. Also update to 1.6

I'm on 1.0005, but yeah, Stolls pack is good for a first run. It fixes plenty of stuff with the game and generally makes it more convenient without changing the core gameplay. There's 3 versions in the mod pack, read the readme to find out which one is right for you.
Yeah, patch up to 1.0005 (1.0006 is a multiplayer only patch), and I'd say check out the mod pack too. It has some tweaks that can improve framerate as well as adds a couple things that address some annoying things without changing the game too much.
On an unrelated note, I was in the Bar when another blowout hits. I'm safe, so I figure I'll just chill and wait it out. So I'm just standing around, watching the NPCs go nuts and run around in circles. Except for the barkeep, who's just watching tv and still willing to sell me stuff. It eventually ends, and everyone goes back to normal. As I'm leaving, I notice something. The guard at the entrance, you know- Mr. "I said come in! Don't stand there!" is laying dead on the ground. I guess radiationcan go around one corner, but not two. So I took his rifle and sold it back to the barkeep before continuing on my way.

The scientist guy in the bunker sells it, when you've done a few of his quests.

because man
Eventually.
I got attacked by three zombies that all appeared out of nowhere before I realised it was just the same zombie.
I don't understand this.
So you killed a zombie and he got back up 3 times or...?
Yes. I was looking the other way every time it got up.
I think that be hilarious after the second time.
"Take that foul zombie! Hey what's over there? Damn it, another one!"
I also thought of a dismembered hand tapping you on the shoulder so you would turn around.
I didn't catch on until I killed it for the last time.
"Ha! That's the last one. Now to...say, why is there only one corpse, I coulda sworn...ohhh..."
Good god is that terrifying.
Plus I had no medkits at the time.

Since I only had a pistol, I emptied 20 rounds in the thing untill it went down.
Then it got back up again.
Oh fuck I just saw another two coming from that building.

Seriously guys, a shotgun?!
But then ya get splattered with zombie goo, and get yelled at by Mrs Stalker for messing up your nice new biosuit.
Aww, he just wants to be my friend!
