Oh S.T.A.L.K.E.R why must your goodness be denied to me? So, I ended up ordering it from Amazon, but UPS sent to the middle school down a couple blocks from where I live. I don't know they got that mixed up.
Now they have to pick it up and take it back to me. I'm hoping for today or Friday.
I will play you S.T.A.L.K.E.R., I will!
Can't you just walk down to the school and get it?
Just what I intended but the person who signed for it didn't feel comfortable with it. But regardless they sent it and now I have it!
I have played through just the bandit fight and can say I love this game.
Though I did jump when a wild boar decided it wanted something in Wolf's camp.
I was going through the sewers near garbage where strelok's stash is and holy fuck on the way out
BAM controller from behind. Scared the pants off me. Of course, it didn't help that it was 2am and I was alone in a pitch dark room with headphones on.
I have a tough time playing really scary games - Silent Hill is a no-go, F.E.A.R. took large amounts of biting the bullet to take a few steps (and a game guide to clue me in to scarier parts), and even Doom 3 and Vampire: The Masquerade: Bloodlines were nigh-unplayable in parts.
That said, I can play Stalker because I always have the sense, even in the ridiculously creepy parts, that there is an escape. Being outside hardly ever worries me because there's freedom to run and lots of other stalkers about to help me out with monsters. Being underground, I know that soon enough, I'll be outside again and in decidedly more control over my fate.
I think the worst part is the lightning (i'm running an ubercomputer so it's all maxed out) in underground areas with the flashlight. I'm already naturally really claustrophobic and oh fuck it is just so bad. I endless sprint through all the underground sections just to GET OUT.
Yeah, Stalker would be fuckawesome with proper coop.
They stated they can't do coop due to the wildlife AI running on all separate computers.
So synchronize it from one host damnit
I, for one, could spend untold hours just playing spotter for a sniper team, grabbing the high ground to call out zombies and other targets and watching them get picked off.
And then the looting begins.
Edit: Also, Riale - that glitch with stalkers aggroing faraway targets is, unfortunately, kind of common. A quick way to unjam it is to quicksave/quickload, or make a hard save, quit the game and load it back up. This can cause the AI to hiccup and should force them to lose targets beyond a certain distance. Some mods also affect how stalkers detect targets, and I know the ZRP fixed a lot of scripted encounters, but you never know just how far that quest giver's going to wander before finally standing down.
EDIT: I think the guy below me just asked this....
Sorry.
I installed Stolls' pack over v1.0005 and it was fine. I haven't tried Oblivion Lost yet. And I don't think I'm going to for quite some time. This game is so much better now. Thank you, Stolls!
Oh, and it's scary. For the first time since I was 10 I am actually scared of a game.
After finally getting past Duty to the Bar--which was itself much more stressful than it's ever been--it was about 12:00 AM and I couldn't see more than a meter or two, even with my flashlight on. Fumbling cautiously down the road, I saw a pair of yellow eyes in the darkness. Ten seconds later, I had killed my second leaping mutated dog of the playthrough, right before its pounce would have carried it straight into me. I was feeling pretty pleased with myself.
It was about two hundred meters to the Duty checkpoint I knew to exist at the edge of the Bar area. At this point, nothing could go wrong. I started sprinting, because I'd be damned if I wanted to spend any more time in the dark, having a conversation with nothing.
It went well for a few seconds: just a run in the dark. I lost the road for a bit when I had to navigate around an abandoned truck, but I found it again with little difficulty. I was going to be all right, I thought.
Then I began to hear a certain noise, and I suddenly remembered what exactly this stretch of road was known for: Dogs. Lots of dogs. They barked quite a lot, so I knew there were very many of them.
But then I realized that I'd seen lots of those little blind dogs in the daytime. They had fled when I approached. They hadn't been dangerous at all! No problem, I figured: I'd just run right past them.
What happened next? Oh, I think you know.
It could be that I'm playing on Master difficulty. Realistic, dangerous fights are so much more fun than *plink plink plink hello we are shooting you in the face* style combat.
How am I supposed to deal with night, though? Before NVG's? ... I do get NVG's with this mod, right?

How am I supposed to deal with night, though? Before NVG's? ... I do get NVG's with this mod, right?
Yeah, I'm pretty sure the same suits that had night vision in the vanilla game have them in OL.
As to how to deal with dogs, you could just do what I do all the time.
Run screaming for the Duty barricade.
Oh yeah, that's what I did. The first time I didn't make it because I'd been sprinting just to get there faster, rather than when the dogs started attacking. I made it over the bridge and then they tore me apart. The second time I saved my strength for when I would need it, and they peeled off as I staggered into Duty's range, utterly exhausted.
I'm just up to x18 and I'm starting to think I should have played on a higher difficulty. Bandits have become a non-issue and I have so many medkits it's not even funny. The only time I die is when I round a corner and get pegged with a shotgun before I can react.
I installed Oblivion Lost, and it is not running well at all.
Part of the problem could be that I did a fresh install on my non-Windows partition (that is to say, my "L" drive). So it could be that. It ran perfectly, before the last time I installed OL and messed up my install somehow, so I know my computer can run it.
That's all I can think of, save for some serious problems with the new patch or OL.
Also, is there some way to re-enable the head bob? I really liked it.
So who thought it'd be a good idea to remove the stamina bar from OL's hud? Cause, it's not like that's USEFUL or anything, nosiree...They also removed all the guns from the Barkeep, it was nice buying all the best guns as soon as I got there, but I assume that Yantar and the new trader somewhere in Pripyat have new stuff.
Anyone remember where the "threaded" spas-12 is? The one with better accuracy with slugs and darts? I can't find the damn thing this go around.

Bah you guys are little girls. Real men fight them off with the knife!!
So I finally made it to the bar. Guy mentioned something about going to X18 or somewhere, I'm sure it's nothing major to worry about. Anyway, I just about have 30,000 in cash after selling off my stockpile of looted AK's from Agroprom, and I was thinking it would probably be a good time to get some proper protection for the wasteland.
There's two suits at around 30,000 though. One offers like 90% protection to everything radiation and hazard related, a real wasteland survival suite, but doesn't offer any real protection against more ordinary dangers like, you know, bullets.
The other suit offers heavy protection against bullets and things but not much in terms of the more natural hazards of a radioactive environment.
Right now I'm leaning more towards the radiation suit rather than the combat suit. Even though I tend to get beaten down pretty hard, if I'm going any further into the zone, I can see a survival suit like that is probably going to be a must.
Without any particular spoilers, would it be more preferable for me to have to get the combat based suit just yet? Or is there something better I should be saving up for?
The rads and hazards are much more dangerous then bullets. You should be used to using cover and picking off guys from a distance by then to rely on the overall protection.

I largely am, I just keep running out of bullets. :x
So I just started playing - about 15 minutes in or so. I've rescued Nimble and am on my way north. I went to grab the suit that Nimble told me about and just after I grabbed the suit I failed the mission. I was under the impression I had 3 days to do it. Does time progress really fast?
Anyway, I proceeded north to the bridge and saw the military guys shooting dogs, etc. Then they all started walking towards an anomaly with their guns drawn. Eventually six of them were all clamoring for the same spot, bumping into each other, pointing at nothing. I walked in front of them, and nothing (they were hostile with me). So I went under the bridge, noticed they had left some bread out, and took said bread. This apparently awakened them out of their stupor so they rained bullets on me...
I installed Stoll's major mod collection. All the background conversations are in Ukrainian.. are they originally in english? Where would I change this back - I want to understand their chatter.
Also, I dropped all my cash on an AK74SU with 90 rounds.. was this naive?
Thanks for any advice.
I'm glad to finally be playing this after falling in love with the concept back in 2004..
It was very naive. That is an awful gun and you get better ones for free almost immediately.
Don't worry about it, though- you'll end up with more money than you can spend anyway.
The suit thing sounds like a bug. I've never had that happen before.

Might've happened if Nimble was killed though. The zone isn't the most forgiving place, even if you're just heading back to camp.
Goggles, that -exact- chain of events happened to me the first playthrough. What's happened is the folks from the area to the east came over and probably gunned down most of the village in your absence, nimble included. However, Nimble's reward isn't all that hot, and that suit certainly isn't bad for starting out, so it's probably best you just don't complete the quest anyways.
Of course, I only found that out after quickloading and sprinting back and forth five or six times to try and make it...

Vanilla has the conversations in Ukrainian as well.

RIP AND TEAR!
This is how I killed the bandits in the first mission. Then I took their shotguns for my own.
Ok a couple questions before I get too far in.
I installed Stoll's mod pack(Thanks Stoll) and it just shows up as an unreadable file, is this how it is? It seems to make my game run smoother but I don't know.
Second, I'll be heading to Garbage soon, how will I fare with only a couple bottles of vodka? Should I get some Anti-rad meds from trader guy?
Okay, can someone walk me through the process for artifact alchemy in Oblivion Lost? Do I have to stand in the anomaly and drop the artifact or can I throw it?

X18 is the most likely candidate, I'd say.
I can see why Raneados would be embarrassed.
well
I was supposed to meet up with the dude near the tunnel
I think 3rd mission
yes
I know
but this game scares me horribly and I don''t know why
man
tomorrow I am waking up early and playing it at like 7 AM
Just wait until Agroprom.
