I cannot for the life of me understand that that part of the guy is. Is it an arm stump or something? But he has both arms.

I'm pretty sure that's his arm, raised up presumably to show some gesture of affection to the woman. Her arm is on the outside while his is on the inside, which is why it looks like it cuts off.
Is this a reference to something that I am missing or do I just need to wait until Wednesday to understand what is happening?
Am I dumb or impatient, basically?
Impatient, methinks.
Garry: I know you gentlemen have been through a lot, but when you find the time I'd rather not spend the rest of the winter TIED TO THIS FUCKING COUCH!
There's a lot going on here. Interesting that neither the mom nor the dad is the designated monster-slayer of the household. What kind of badassery does she possess that got her that position? What makes Grace so great? Can't wait to find out.
It looks nice, and I'm interested. But I'm worried it will turn out like a lot of other stuff they've done. We get a hint of a story, but nothing really concrete happens.

Have to admit I am a little concerned about that too... especially since they've said this story is only going to run for six comics, and while this first one is cute, it seems almost like a throwaway at this point. It introduces characters (sort of) but nothing really happens.

Yeah, I'd almost qualify these stories as tonal pieces instead of narratives. You get a sense of the world and not too much else. Almost like they are pilots for TV series...
And honestly I think I prefer it to the alternative. I'd rather get a brief peek here at PA and see the detailed work done in a movie/TV/book/videogame. Compared to taking up a month of comics to tell a short story.

I'd be cool with either approach. I don't think they need to do a Gabe &Tycho strip three times a week at this point. I look forward to whatever the artists want to create. Plus it possible gives Jerry a chance to improve/experiment with his side of the equation, as Mike has been doing with the art.
Grace, UNDER FIRE! POW POW BAM POW, "NO, I NEED HER TO TAKE OUT THE TRASH ITS ICKY" "NO I NEED HER TO KILL SPIDERS!" and from THE BANDSTANDS?! "SHE AINT NOTHIN!" What, will, grace, do?!
I've got zero frame of reference to understand what's currently going on in the comic. So there's this girl and her parents really like her, and one's a parent who's going through some bought of crippling depression? What the heck is "Nightlight"?
I'm okay with not getting a comic's subject matter immediately, because usually the post will explain it, but when I don't get the comic OR the post (because the language used is just too obtuse to penetrate it's meaning), I get lost. This is the first time that's happened with an ongoing series, so any help would be appreciated.

It's his right arm behind her left arm. Their hands are wrapped around each other's shoulders.
...Though I suppose that could be useful sometimes.

This is part 1 of a 6-part Nightlight story. Mike's post about it is here.
Oh yeah, okay.
I loved that first Nighlight strip. I didn't make the connection here.
“I let out a battle cry. Sure, a lot of people might have mistaken it for a sudden yelp of unmanly fear, but trust me. It was a battle cry.”
