Well I try and try for Lucina and Robin but I do hope the Skylanders Bowser is not as much of a pipe dream
I mean, he's not in any way rare. He's in the starter pack. So everyone who plays the 3DS version will get him, and a lot of those people will sell their stuff at some point. So it's not the same as Lucina who is literally impossible to find.
So then it's more a matter of how much you are willing to pay for him used, which will likely go down as time goes on.
Yeah, Skylanders is exactly why I don't want Nintendo to go the "unlock major game content with Amiibo!" route.
I don't have it in front of me, but IGN figured out that being able to access all content in Trap Team would cost you well over $200, and that's assuming you were careful and just bought one of every type.
I don't know much about Skylanders (this is my first one because, y'know, amiibo) but Kotaku's review made it sound like you only need one of each vehicle type to access all the content. If you get Bowser and DK, that's flying and car right there.
One of each vehicle and if tradition holds there are elements each figure is tied to. so probably at least seven figures the game and the portal so that's about right
The cars and figures seem to have elements, which seems to give them stat buffs in specific areas. I havn't seen a mission yet require a specific element to open, they just seem to be harder to do. Wouldn't be surprised if there were some, although everything seems to be vehicle-specific so far.
Also I didn't realize this until later, but both DK and the elf with the stake mini-gun it comes with are the same element. The Barrel Blaster is fire, while they're the plant-type.
The lives system is a bit bollocks, too. (Where a character is defeated, they have to sit out a while and you have to use a different figure. It doesn't seem to have any sort of timer associated with it, looks to be at least the current mission or until you go back to the Academy. If you do so, you have to restart the mission you're on.)

I'm hoping I can buy the dark ones used or something for not a lot. Probably won't be the case but I just honestly can't justify paying $25 more for the dark edition of a game I don't even know if I'll like, not to mention buying the fucking Wii version like a weirdo :P I honestly don't even like the look of the dark versions that much - but I would get them for completions sake if the price was ok.
I'm waiting on a big sale or something to pick up the 3DS version. Which is a bummer since I'd rather have Bowser, but what are ya gonna do?

Holy crap, they did NOT want me to remove those figures from the Skylanders starter pack! My god!
Anyways, I also picked up the Halloween Fiesta (GS exclusive) and his car and that best buy rabbit guy, so that's cool. I'm gonna try out the game tonight.
I know I'm late on this particular topic, but people always point to Skylanders as an example of how awful an amiibo-centric game would be, but I have a bit more faith in Nintendo making a game that didn't bleed it's customers dry by requiring dozens of figures.
I think it's really tough to find a good balance in that regard as a developer.
On the one hand, you want people to have a good time with the game even if they only have one or two figures..but you also want each figure to contribute something unique to the game to incentivize people to buy them.
I would sort them into 3 or 4 basic types. Swordsmen style would cover most of your Zelda and Fire Emblem characters. Acrobat type for your Mario and DK families. Samus and the Star Fox team would be Shooter type.
The levels could be largely the same, but some paths within the level would depend on your abilities.
I would have unique elements of the world be based on franchises, not individual characters. Warp pipes, DK barrels, treasure chests, etc.
The story would just be shamelessly lifted from Captain N.

From what I understand, this game is not that bad. You only need one of each vehicle type. And honestly, from what I played last night it wasn't even that bad. It's like, I'll do those sections eventually but I am fine just doing land vehicle stuff for now. The more annoying thing is the flashing "OMG YOU GUYS, FIRE TYPES ARE TOTALLY STRONG IN THIS AREA MAYBE YOU SHOULD USE THAT!!!!!!1111" every two seconds. It's like, dude, Skylanders, I am using Fiesta because he is badass and this game is piss easy on Expert.
Oh, speaking of which, yeah, I kind of hate how DK controls. Fiesta is super fun tho. His car is awesome. I wish I could fiddle with the car controls though. I feel like RT should be accelerate and LT should be backup, but LT does nothing. In fact, if you try to go backwards in "racing" sections it just blows up your car...
Anyway. I haven't been paying much attention after Palutena. I assume ZSS rare as hell and good luck finding one without importing?
I wouldn't call it "walk into a store on a random tuesday and she'll be on the shelves" easy to find, but I've had little trouble spotting any of the current wave except for the classic 8 bit mario in stores or on the internet. Not in every store, but you can find them.

When I was a kid, I wanted a Captain N game so very badly. So if they ever did a crossover adventure type game with the various worlds and characters using amiibo it would be the closest I'd ever come to that dream. :P

I finally told my hoarder side to suck an egg and got rid of all these boxes, separating the plastic from the cardboard for recycling.
I find the boxes look nice and are far easier to dust. And since the figures are basically just statues -- no accessories or posability -- there's little reason to have them out except to scan (which isn't even necessary for Skylanders or Infinity).

Funny story. I took a day of leave so I could be in line to ensure I nabbed a Ganondorf and not have to cyber hunt one down for original price like I had to do for Charizard.
I got it, of course. I was the third person in line.
Had to hit up Walmart to get sandpaper today. They haven't gotten any new Amiibo since wave 1. But sure as shit, there were 3 Dorfs just chilling out next to all the wave ones they can't get rid of.

I told myself I would never pay more than $20 for an amiibo, and even then $20 is high. However I might break and get Ness off Amazon, he's the last one that I want coming out for a while. I got ZSS & Olimar, but still just can't find a Ness.
