I have to say that I think Stellaris took the worst of both worlds when it comes to combat; the 3D models look terrible, the special effects are N64 worthy and the framerate just tanks when big battles happen.

I'd have vastly preferred just an abstracted EU / CK system, which has no pretenses about 'splosion porn and does a good job of staying brief / inoffensive to the flow of play.

For some reason, I had it in my head that the game was releasing today (even though releasing on a Friday is a bad idea for lots of reasons). Maybe 6 looks too much like 9?

Anyway, queue the sad trombone when I realized my error.

it would have been quite nice for them to release it on friday, I get that when they inevitably give us a game crippling bug that the nerd rage would be too great to wait until monday to fix though.

I'm trying to avoid watching any more streams as I'd prefer to go into the game unspoiled in any manner. The Blorg stream was really good in that respect, as they didn't do too many of the missions and such, concentrating more on the gameplay elements.

Fortunately the gods of old have decided to make the weather this weekend particularly nice. Will make the wait a bit easier I hope.

I dunno, the game looks super stable on streams and youtube. I haven't seen any game breaking bugs yet.

FYI, it was mentioned earlier, but Distant Worlds Universe is on sale for 30 bucks (steam key) over at Bundle Stars.

I tried to play a game of Distant Worlds last night to ease the pain of waiting, but the first time it didn't load to the menu properly, and took about 10 mins before I gave up on it, then the second time I got in, went to create the universe, game crashed.

Not sure whats up with that because I have totally played it before, but 20 mins of just trying to launch it made me go to Star Ruler 2 instead.

FYI Star Ruler and Star Ruler 2 are very different games, but I recommend both.

Spent a chunk of time watching Quill's let's play. He does a great job of introducing the basic mechanics.

Also, I really wanna go Wormhole now

one thing that kinda irks me is that Paradox aint doing pre-loading of the game.
it was mentioned in the first episode of the multiplayer stream. so probably don't expect to play at midnight or whenever...

the two guys were like, "its only a few gigs..."
yes, but you got over 100k people downloading it as soon as you press the ''live'' button.
Im thinking your servers are gonna melt, bro.

it's steam bro, it'll be fine. Paradox's servers aren't being relied on for anything

same, his idea of using the initial starting corvettes to quickly check every system in range for badguys/habitable worlds really appeals to me.

Also all the streams ive seen only have 1 or two science ships. I want more than that, justa whole bunch of science ships everywhere surveying the cosmos before anyone else can.

I don't think that's practical unless you're using hyperdrive. Jump gates and warp drive are both range limited. If you watch shenryyr's twitch, yesterday's race had hyperdrive and he was doing his best to explore ALL THE THINGS, but his science ship kept running into space monsters.

Edit: I propose using Star Trek/Wars, MoO and ME for the movement types going forward!

I'm legit upset this game isn't out for this weekend, it's obviously done!!!

I know warp gates are limited but I prefer being able to go where I want rather than be limited by hyperlines.
so my plan would be the corvettes act as scouts for the science ships, making sure space is safe for them to map. If its not safe they can call in the main fleet to make it safe. Wormhole stations will mean my science ships won't explore too far from support. And if there is nothing to survey they can boost my research instead,

Wormholes == gates.. You have to build a wormhole generator, which functions like a Mass Effect (or Eve Online, for that matter) jump gate.

And in game, hyperlanes engines are called hyperdrives, but the Star Trek "warp space and go anywhere" travel is called warpdrive.

Do the wormholes require a construct in the end system as well?

    Federation "facts?" from various sources:

You don't have to vote to declare war.
There is some kind of special fleet that can use the tech of ALL members.

The only person who can declare war is the president, which rotates every ten years.
The first president goes to the race that proposed the formation of the federation.
It has to be founded by a four-member (or bigger) alliance by unanimous consent.

The different races still control their own personal fleets, but the alliance fleet is somehow under the command of the president??

No, you can go to or from a wormhole gate to any system in range.

Edit: also, wormhole gates can be built in any space you can get to, even an otherwise empty, unsurveyed system.

Yes. You have to do it this way, because you can't get from a to c directly if the gate is in B.

I have no idea if there's a special sekret drive type that allows you to use all three systems, because the speed seems to be wormhole>hyperdrive>warpdrive.

I don't believe everyone gets 10 years, I believe the founder gets 10, then each other nation rotates for 5. At least, that's how the Blorg stream showed it.

True. I'm just wondering if you can research it independently, or if you have to actually kill Fallen Empire ships to get it. I mean, I know that wormhole users can get a map of the hyperlanes, as I've seen someone get the tech, but they ignored it. If you research all three techs, can you then research the "yump drive"?

    It is certainly different...

I guess the normal president length is five years, with a bonus of five years for founding the federation? That's what Assuran is saying happened in the Blorg stream, which I didn't watch very much.

Somehow is just that it is.

Like there are 4 players, they make one ship a piece. Each of them controls that one ship.

When they form a federation, the President can make a ship that's part of the Federation Fleet. It can use all the techs of every Federation member.

At that point, the President can use both the normal ship and the Federation Fleet ship. Then, when someone else becomes President, they get control.

What's really interesting is what happens if you dissolve the Federation. Who gets all those leftover ships?

I'd kind of love if the Federation Fleet turned to Piracy or something.

The techs have rarities, and I would assume that even the fallen empire techs would show up if you played long enough. They would just be really rare and cost so much that it would only make sense to try for them in the very late game. I think the player is meant to be able to develop enough that they can eventually beat a fallen empire. The super powerful but small alien empire as late game boss is a common trope in these games.

I'm hoping a mod or expansion can allow federations to merge into a Galactic empire.

I'd want to join a federation as a small system, rise to power as a federation member, and usurp power forming an empire! Very Star Wars politics-esque.

I understand that. But there are also unlocks. The "cards" in the "deck" of techs are based on many factors including at least: 1) the traits of the scientist running that tech section and 2) what techs your race has already unlocked. For example, you never get spacestation III without spacestation II. I just hope they've made it so that Jump Drive or an equivalent is available from getting all the other engine types.

How to beat a fallen empire spoilers
You can beat a fallen empire in the super, super late game. Even then though you won't be able to win out in a single war. The Fallen Empires only weakness is that they've forgotten how to build their beastly ships, so if you destroy some they can't rebuild. So over multiple wars of attrition you can eventually wear them down.

As to the yump drive discussion, I wasn't aware that the Fallen Empires had a special tech? Just that their jump ranges on the standard drive's techs is insanely high. I could well be incorrect though, I've only followed Paradox's official streams thus far.

I do know for sure though that players will start off with one of the three jump drive types, but are able to unlock the others later on if they get the right tech. Fleets are only allowed to have a single type of jump drive though.

Man I'm gonna make a fanatic militarist spiritualist empire and make it my holy mission to take out a fallen empire and glass every single one of their planets. Why can't this game be out now, my head is going to explode.
