[DS/PSP] Worms sequel has online multiplayer!

I just found this out and my pants exploded. I'm not really a big online multi kind of guy, but Worms cries out for it. It thrives on it, and it shrivels without it. (See: Open Warfare 1.) So my glee at hearing that THQ announced that the upcoming sequel (slated for July) will have online multiplayer is unmatched. Also of note: according to a Team 17 forum post, the developer for this one is totally different from Open Warfare 1, and Team 17 actually co-developed the title.

THQ has announced that Worms: Open Warfare 2 will be heading to the DS and PSP this July. The latest game in the treasured "worms killing each other with absurd weapons" series will expand on the first Open Warfare title, in particular by adding online multiplayer.

According to the game's official site, the single player includes a full-length campaign and a new Puzzle mode that ostensibly forces you to survive using limited items. Multiplayer modes include Deathmatch, Forts (which includes bases to defend) and Race (which has players using jetpacks and ninja rope to race head-to-head). The game also boasts a level editor that lets players create custom battlefields and share them with friends.

The first Worms: Open Warfare for the DS and PSP was met with a lukewarm reception: Series fans were mostly upset about the conspicuous absence of online play, arguably the series' biggest draw. A Team 17 representative has said on the company's forums that the developers behind Open Warfare 2 are completely different from the first title and that Team 17 co-developed the title.

The question is, which is better: Online deathmatch or online ninja rope races?

    Oh man, this July.

    Frothing.

Online play on the portables? That's pretty hot.

BTW, how did the XBLA version turn out?

Xbox Live Version is pretty good, it gets plenty of play time between me and a mate. Single player is understandably a bit cack though.

What exactly are you waiting for with DLC? It's been announced that NO new weapons will be introduced and the only things we'll get will be voice schemes and level schemes.

it's good though, the weapons, whilst missing some of the better ones, are fun and pretty well balanced. The maps are a tad too small compared to the other games and the physics feel a bit...heavier (Worms don't jump as high or slide as much on the ground).

I'd really enjoy a "proper" worms release on the 360 (retail) with all the bells and whistles of Worms 2 onwards with Xbox Live play.

Ninja rope races? Awesome - on Worms 2 my cousin and I had created our very own Ninja Rope run, which we attempted to navigate amid gradually rising water. Racing people would fill in me a void I didn't know existed until now.

Is it possible for DS and PSP players to play each other? Not just Worms, but like...at all? Is this a hardware/software limitation or is it simply up to developers/Sony/Nintendo?

    That said, fuck yes.

It's entirely possible for a DS and a PSP to connect to each other over the internet. But considering online play on the DS uses Nintendo Wi-Fi Connection, it's not going to happen.

I'm pretty sure there was homebrew game made for the DS and PSP that could be played cross-platform over the internet.

Ninja Rope races are what brought me back to Worms 2 after I got bored with it. And now portable online races?

Its awful happy in my pants.

Yeah, it's the same reason there's no Mario games available for Xbox. These companies are not interested in playing nice with each other.

Couldn't stand the first one (I was, perhaps unrealistically, expecting Worms Armageddon but... portable) but hopefully this'll be awesome. Colour me cautiously optimistic.

I'll consider it. If it's as bare-bones as the XBLA one then I'm not going to buy it just because it's portable.

    I'm like a shark...

I knew I'd subconsciously stolen that from somewhere. The shark bit is classic.

But anyway, Worms. I like Worms.

The first Worms Open Warfare for DS was outsourced to a crappy company called Gamesauce, who were then burnt at the stake for their since (the PSP version was developed in-house). This time the DS version is being developed in partnership between Team 17 and Two Tribes in Holland, who also developed the N-Gage port of Worms World Party (which, you will remember, was shit-hot).

I'll probably end up getting both. I want to be able to accept any challenge, any time, anywhere, with anyone. Also I am a consumer whore.

I am going to buy this SO HARD. Two copies even, one for myself and one for my girlfriend. Oh yes, I'm going to school her so hard. :P Perhaps I'll finally get a wireless router or something so I can play online too, that'd be neat.

The DS version of WOW2 is being developed by Two Tribes (who ported Worms World Party to the NGage) as opposed to GameSauce (who ported WOW1 to the DS). So, yes.

Also: Complete list of new features, taken from THQ UK's press site.

If you check the official site, they specifically mention wireless local play.

So it's just that summary that's wrong then? That's good. I should've known really, since they misspelt "infrastructure" as well...

Wait, a boomerang? Are they actually adding in new weapons for once?

Edit: Cool, bunch more stuff. Not nearly as much as I would have liked, but far better than they've done up to this point. I'm a bit worried about the Concrete Donkey showing up in the list, hopefully the game still has a bunch of hidden superweapons.

I copied + pasted from THQ's Press Extranet for the summary on Dream17, which seems to be missing a few minor details that Team 17 have confirmed is in the game. Y'know, obvious stuff like the local wireless play, etc.

And the DS version does have online rankings.

I'm surprised to hear that no one's played the N-Gage version.

...and then again I'm not surprised...

But it was really good! The best part was online play anywhere due to the cell service. I spent a lot of time in doctor's offices playing online while I waited.

I'm fairly sure it wasn't. Its mechanics are also different then anything in Armageddon, it apparently pushes without doing damage and can collect crates. I wonder how effective it will actually be, the Uzi seems to already work fine for ranged pushes.

Hmm, just noticed that the minigun is missing, I hope this isn't a complete list.

    Edit: Hmm, worm hats? Sweet.
