Opening at 8 made it possible to get pins and get a good place in the Queue Line on the same day. Ah well, maybe a suggested idea for 2016?
Noted. But welcome to PAX, you can't see\do everything. :-)
Well maybe if you didn't have such a wide variety of interesting stuff that caters to many people this wouldn't be a problem. It might also solve the ticket shortage problem too.
Banner Saga pins will be free and available for purchase according to their Facebook page.
This here is the best way possible to do pins.
Sell the darn thing for your money back, or have people demo your game and get a free pin.
I honestly love this format, dungeon defenders used it at South for a discount on the game.
....can't go to Prime this year . If anybody can snag me a Prime Polygon , Vault Dweller, DOOM pin though, will gladly trade you something, like a complete South Core set, Halloween 2014 set, etc.
For fun, I've made a map of the pin locations. Let me know if I've missed any. I'm still compiling my list of "free vs purchase", haven't heard anything about the Maker, Gigantic, Thinkgeek, or Runic pins definitively yet (my assumption is that Thinkgeek + Maker = purchase, Gigantic + Runic = free with playing the game).

It might be helpful to also include a picture of the pin next to, or in the area, of each booth on the map with a caption if its free or not.

They also said that the D&D pin would be available at the WotC booth.

That's the plan, once I get home and have access to software that isn't Excel and Paint.

When you say D&D pin, are you talking about the new one they are also giving out at Acq Inc or THE D&D pin?

Rage of Demons Pin - Available to all attendees of the Acquisitions Incorporated Panel or at the Wizards of the Coast Booth #1642

Just wanted to make sure, because the Ampersand is highly sought after...by me :P

They are talking about the new one. I really wish that the official name of the 2014 East AI pin was "D&D 40th Anniversary" instead of just "D&D" -- it would help reduce confusion.
After finally looking at all of the pins and the estimated costs of them all, my question is is there a purpose or advantage to buying multiple polygons and PAX sets? And additionally, any clue which pins it might be best to prioritize as likely to be valuable tradewise?
Disclaimer: Sorry for a lot of questions on stuff like value and the like but even if I restrain myself to only getting pins I truly want as a new trader there are a lot of older pins that fall in to that category and to get them I need to trade for them, but I also am not flush with money. (If I'm using that saying correctly)
Any "Earned" pins are going to be more sought after. For example that dumb Kappa pin will be highly tradeable I'm guessing bc of the limitations on getting one. Multiple Polygons is always something to do if you want good trade pins. For the Staff trading you would potentially need 26 trade pins(I believe that is the right number) to trade twice with all the staff, so a lot of people buy show sets for that.
Not sure what other pins are supposed to be hard to get this year, as I've been working too much and haven't delved in too much. For example though, if you focus on one pin it is somethimes a good thing to do once you have your set. I ended up with 5 or 6 Leeroys at East 14' and they were great for trading.

I would buy extra polygons. I wouldn't necessarily, buy extra PAX sets, unless you need more pins to trade with.
The Twitch Kappa could wind up being the most difficult pin to get. Riptor may also be difficult. Some pins, from known properties, may have good long term value, like the Diamond Block from Minecraft, the Portal pins, Commander Bragh from the Star Wars game, and the Vault Boy from Fallout 4.
I would go after the following time sink/free pins if you're trying to not spend a lot of money. People will definitely trade for them.
Kappa (panel, or first 50 each day)
Riptor (challenge dev)
World of Warships (first 1000 each day)
Commander Bragh (demo + prereg for game)
Rock Band (demo)
Rage of Demons (AcqInc or demo)
Rainbow 6 (demo and/or picture)
Gideon (play 5 magic games)
Iver (demo or buy)
Bellower (demo or buy)
Sprite (demo or buy)
Tyto (maybe, not known yet)
Lovers in a Dangerous Space Time (maybe, not known yet)

Just a note; non-LE purchased pins also trade better if you have access to future PAXen. What is often difficult/impossible to trade on the forum tends to be easier to move in-person elsewhere. But as Fayt/thx suggest, you'll get a lot more mileage out of timesink pins.
I understand it varies depending on popularity and how long games last, but on average how big of a time block do you think one would need to devote to a timesink line?
Edit: Reason I'm asking is because after reading Q's experience at East, I want to avoid becoming so pin crazy to miss going to or doing things that will make PAX more enjoyable (mostly PA Q&As).
Also reason for adding reason is because I've asked so many questions at this point I feel I need to explain why.
PS How long in advance is it a good idea to start lining up for the Pin trade Session?

At East earlier this year I lined up about an hour ahead of time, I believe, and it worked out okay. Made some friends in line, got a few trades in, and made it into the event okay (although I did wait maybe 10-20 minutes after it opened?), so it really depends on how they have Prime set up in comparison. But yeah, probably an hour at least?

If it makes ya feel any better, usually everything in the Main Theater is livestreamed, and archived via TwitchTV. So you can watch it later if you wanna do something else or trade during certain panels. That's usually what I do, unless a panel is super important or not livestreamed (usually only 1 or 2 satellite theaters get livestreamed...the rest you gotta go to in person)
For the pin trading session me and my friends headed over there last year just as the convention center closed, we ended up in about the middle of the line.
For fun, I've made a map of the pin locations. Let me know if I've missed any. Your assumption is correct regarding the ThinkGeek pin, it'll be available for purchase. No hoops to jump through.
Merch Lite is now opening at 9am, sorry for the confusion. I hope this lets you sleep in a little longer. Edited my previous post to avoid confusion. Please spread the word.
The Rainbow 6 pin has potential if they only want you to share a picture.
It's out there. The 6 with a gun in place of the hole of the number. Pinnypals site has an image of it.
While I don't consider it that impressive, I feel obligated to try and trade for it because R6 has been one of my favorite franchises.
I'm talking about low time sink involved in getting the pin. The AoE pin last year was very easy to get (and the game was fun to demo) so it became the default fodder pin.

Reread your statement and realized I completely missed what you said! Hah, my bad.
I'm not a huge collector, but my daughter really wants the Kappa pin. Not knowing how the lines are this year, what is the best way to attack the Twitch booth to get a pin. The twitch panel is happening at the same time as the Gearbox panel and we always go to the gearbox panel. I'd rather not miss it and if the only way to get a Kappa pin is to miss Gearbox I will be a sad panda.

Twitch will bring the pain when it comes to lines.
We don't know how Pax is doing the morning Queue this year so your best bet is to plan on missing Gearbox and line up crazy early at the Twich panel.
You can still try Friday morning to get to the Twitch booth fast enough and if you get lucky you won't have to miss Gearbox later.
