Management sims in general are able to hit a sweet spot where they're often approachable for casual gamers but can also be tuned for complexity for more hardcore gamers.
The port of War Chest is reportedly not great. Locked to 30 FPS and has general performance issues. They've got the 30 FPS cap as a "known issue" they're looking into so might be worth waiting for a few patches.
This makes me think. Obviously PC gamers like, and expect, 60fps games where possible. But I do appreciate it when a game - especially a demanding one - also offers a 30fps cap as an option, so if you haven't got the grunt for 60fps in that particular title but you can stay over 30, you're not stuck with a surging or generally unsettled framerate but instead can just enjoy a consistent one, which personally I find much nicer than it wobbling all over the shop. The Witcher 3 is pretty much the poster child for how to do this absolutely right (among so much else it does so well).
I've been playing Brutal Legend lately, and seeing how well it lends itself to speedrunning (SGDQ, damn you!). It's a game I really love because of both the gameplay and fantastic soundtrack.
Last time I played it was on a 9600GT which was pretty solid. I'm on a 650Ti now which is better but has been experiencing some wildly fluctuating framerates. If I could be guaranteed a solid 30FPS I would take it, but right now I've got 15-60FPS most of the time.
FPS caps, sometimes, it's a problem. Sometimes, it's just convenient.

I mean, Toy Soldiers is a Tower Defense game with light action elements. There's no real reason the game should be 30 FPS on consoles, let alone PC. I can deal with 30 FPS caps when it comes to niche weird Japanese games like is the trend because they don't have as much experience with PC, or for instance, the upcoming ZombiU port is likely to be capped too because it was designed around the Wii-U. It's not the end of the world, but it seems like it's becoming more and more common. Just this month Toy Soldiers, Zombi-U, and Final Fantasy Type 0 HD are all likely to be capped, and all 3 of those are from companies with a lot of PC experience, which is a bit sad.
I imagine you don't see the option for 30 FPS caps of uncapped or 60 FPS games because there's a lot of options for you out there if you want. For instance, in the mentioned Witcher 3, using Rivatuner to cap the game often provides better results than the in-game limiter. You can also do things like create custom resolution/hz output profiles in Nvidia control panel. Wouldn't hurt to have more in game options though.
I actually had to do that with Xeodrifter, it has game logic tied to framerate so running at 144 FPS was like playing in fast forward. Had to force cap it to 60 hz/fps.
So in celebration of the new thread or maybe he was just mad with gifting it seems @Karoz decided to inflict the feels on me with Brothers - A Tale of Two Sons. I'm scared/grateful! Mostly the latter. Thanks!

And that's something that just needs to straight up never happen ever.

Well, that's what most of the 30 FPS caps in games are for. It's sadly pretty widespread, especially in Japan.
Though even EA did it with the last Need for Speed.
OK kids
today was the celebration of life memorial for my father in law. Hopefully my year of death is over. One of the most important lessons I learned from him, as well as my own father, was to "be frugal, so you can splurge when it matters." That being said, I offer up this giveaway
due to shipping constraints by steam, this is open to US only. (or technically i guess i could ship it elsewhere if i send it to myself, then ship it out) also, the winner needs to be willing to send me (PM) their physical address so i can place the order. oh yeah adventure team only also.

My wife recently wanted to get back into WoW, but turning on her PC resulted in her power supply going POP and taking her video card with it.
Like a gentleman, after replacing the power supply, I gave her my video card (an AMD 7870) so she could get her gnome on.
In a display of nonproportional retaliation that would make this thread proud, she then bought me a GTX980.
That's not the cautionary bit, not yet. That comes after I blithely decided that the appropriate course of action was to plug the new card in, boot up, and install nVidia drivers without cleaning out the AMD drivers.
I had a picture, that was good. No audio. All audio devices present, but Windows was reporting that all audio devices were disabled. Tried removing the AMD drivers. Tried removing the audio devices and letting Windows find drivers. Did my share of googling around, but since Windows 10 is all of two weeks old there aren't really a lot of people who have had it blow up in quite the same fashion.
Seven hours later, I wound up doing a Windows 10 "Reset". Now I don't have any of my programs installed, but at least I have sound and picture at the same time.
And at least Steam wasn't installed in C:\Program Files, and re-installing it to the same folder it had been in resulted in all the games showing up in my library, so that's what's important, right?
Now I just need to find a game to stretch this monster's legs - I've been ignoring new releases since my old card started showing up under "minimum requirements" for an embarrassingly large number of titles.
Is Crysis still a system hog? That's gotta be cheap by this point, right? Cheaper than Witcher 3, anyway.
Did anything cool come with your graphics card? They often do.
It came with a code that I am assured can be exchanged at some future date for Metal Gear Solid V, so I've got that to look forward to! It will be my first Metal Gear game; fortunately I am given to understand that the series storyline is very straightforward and I should be able to dive right in.
I settled on Remember Me for a start since it's one of the more recent games I have, I don't think it's the highest stress thing I could possibly have chosen but I'm starting to see why people really like solid 60fps in games
It is the roguelike type that I don't see many people replaying once beating the game. Beating the actual game is a bit tough though and you can be easily screwed if you too poorly in the opening levels, but when it comes to the titular Swindle level, there's not much reason to go back. Most people will likely do it after unlocking everything else so there's not character builds or anything. I suppose you could self impose rules or focus on achievements but there's really not much compelling to go back to.
That being said, I got 11 hours out of it, which is pretty good, and when I finally pulled off the Swindle I did do a fist pump and yell out a guttural "Yes!" because I BARELY managed to escape. So it is not without merit. It joins Hand of Fate as a game I really like but the randomization elements just aren't a draw to come back to it once the main goal of the game is completed once.
New Greenlight game from the makers of HuniePop! HunieCamStudios, where you manage the lives of camgirls. It doesnt look as engaging as the match 3, but who knows.
Never, ever doubt the appeal of management sims.
Someone could throw together a farm manure management sim where you have to manage the hygiene, mental state, and salary of workers while negotiating contracts to haul away manure from farms and weigh different means of getting rid of all that manure once collected and find a paying user base.
In this case, brothel management sims and the like have been done previously so proof of concepts are out there. This is just the first such on Steam.
I've chased a great deal of the brothel sims and say that this looks good because it lets you look at numbers all the time and hides away the porn, which you really stop paying attention to after the first hour or so in lieu of making sure no one got beat up and that you are making the most money.
Modding really would help expand the appeal of these games, as would allowing the creation of a keycode system like the original metroid that would let you duplicate a woman's appearance and traits that other people have created. Copy past that mess and BAM! Replayability.
I've seen complaints on their page about the art style and honestly......I think this is better. More modular for future updates.
For anyone who will ask, sibr1x and the original sim brothel are the only ones worth your time.

And for the sci-fi buffs, the ideas behind being able to save and share your memories like Facebook for your Brain, and the power that gives people, be they lone hackers or faceless megacorps, over your very identity, is fascinating in that "what if" way that only good sci-fi can be.

Files have been verified. But it still won't stay running for more that 5 seconds. I watched in task manager and see it start. It runs up mem use for a bit, then it's gone. I've tried compatibility modes, but none have worked so far.
It always kinda messes with my brain whenever someone brings up Call of Juarez: Gunslinger and generally talks about how it's a good game because of how terrible the sequel is. Like, I immediately register that they're talking about a game with Call of Juarez in the title and that they're saying that they like it, but it takes me a moment to realize that those words say "Gunslinger" and not "The Cartel" and there's just a moment of utter confusion.

The Eleventh Anniversary Giveaway has ended (last night at 22:00). Sorry I didn't get to this last night, but I was exhausted after spending yesterday by being up at 04:30, driving four two hours on logging roads, kayaking for two hours, driving another two hours on logging roads, and then going to a friend's birthday party.
Congratulations to all the winners! Sorry it took so long to send them out. I'll be sending out the games by adding the keys on Steamgifts momentarily!
