Isaac from Golden Sun is still my "holdout for Smash" character.
Is he still in as an assist trophy in 4?

    Nope, they took him out.

Sounds like Isaac as DLC confirmed

Spooky is taking questions on Twitter about pokken. It sounds awesome, but I love arena fighters

I'm almost positive Wolf is going to be part of the next round of character DLC. It would be extremely odd to put in just about every cut character from Brawl and Melee and leave out one that doesn't present legal or technical hurdles.

Pichu is the only other character like that, but that's a different kettle of fish since Pichu was a joke character and I don't think people would shell out money for that. They could add it as a free character, but porting a Melee character probably takes more effort than that's worth.

After that you got Squirtle and Ivysaur as standalone characters, since Pokemon Trainer can't happen for both technical and gameplay reasons now with Charizard having gone solo. The game already has plenty of Pokemon, and Squirtle kinda got replaced by Greninja so I'm skeptical. Snake is possible, but I still think it's very unlikely now since Kojima left Konami on less-than-good terms. I'm sure Konami wouldn't have any issues (sell those Snake Amiibos!) but I think Sakurai would recognize Snake as his friend's baby and not want to work on the character without him.

And that's basically it for the remaining cut characters. They're easy ways to put out content relatively quickly compared to newcomers, which is a nice way to bridge the time between newcomer releases.

there is a high chance of this being fake

    but i want to believe

Speed that is 100% fake but maybe if we join forces and believe extra hard we can make it real anyway.

Shovel Knight is a year old. It'd have to be a global sensation to stand a chance of making it in Smash.

Like...Shantae, even though I find WayForward's campaign to be super desperate and obnoxious, has a better chance since she at least has some history with Nintendo. Shovel Knight just has a tenuous claim to old school Nintendo Nostalgia, which isn't much.

Maybe they should add a character from their million dollar esports sensation, Splatoon.

I'm not saying it will happen, Rorus. I'm saying I want it to. Also, you're wrong, old-school Nintendo Nostalgia is everything wrt Smash. Like, that's the core idea behind the franchise.

    YES

I had heard a lot about the various tech from the years of fighting game osmosis. But then I was watching how stuff like wavedashing, while a universal mechanic, is WILDLY different for characters like Marth. Who doesn't really want to wave dash across the stage as fast as possible, but wave dash in and out of sweet spacing.

I bounced around the cast for an hour or so. There was no way I was going to nail anything like wavedashing/landing or L-Cancels in a day so I mostly played for fun. But man I was really tempted to just pick long stages so I could practice that stuff. Melee is a really fun game on that level and I was surprised I liked it.

I don't see any Ninja Turtles taking on the dam level.

Clearly, there is more nostalgia in these here mines.

    Let's be honest.

If we really want someone who plays a bit like Shovel Knight, who also might actually happen, we should vote for Cranky Kong.

Now to let my controller charge up and I can begin Smashing.

@I Win Swordfights I'm uploading a fight you'll probably like, against a Marth whose only downfall was that he was too cool

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N5kN9je2a_o

    Edit: And here it is

My most appropriately titled video ever

My heart dropped into my stomach when I remembered Ness can't ledge-grab when he's using FAir

But my foul-up was about as bad as his (he overestimated the recovery range on Ness's PK Thunder by a lot - he was probably thinking of Lucas)

Isaac is a pretty bland character, but the GBA Golden Sun games are still pretty good. The DS one was mediocre at best though.

thanks for uploading that! there was some stuff in there i liked but i'd like to see him play try-hard.

In the beginning of the match he had some impressive reads and spacing on where you planned to be and used his aerials well, but he definitely went in waaaaaay too hard and constantly overextended himself

it ended up working out in his favor because ness can't do a whole lot about someone with a sword constantly up his ass, especially online, especially on a stage as hard to run away as an omega is but you did a good job of recognizing where you were disadvantaged and tried to adapt well, and I genuinely liked when you would just spam pk thunder at him sometimes

it did a lot to change the momentum and gave him something to think about, disrupting his flow and giving him a new situation to adapt to

but basically he just jumped around with aerials constantly and did a lot of bad shieldbreakers and ran all over the place whiffing grabs and pivot grabs

also you did a sick air dodge on what would have been a tippered f-smash from him, i was proud of that

but yeah, it's only one match and online so it's hard to gauge him but I could definitely tell he knew what he was doing and i saw some ideas i could use of my own

but then he did the super scrubby jump off ledge fast fall dair to lose, you deserved the win over him imo

For what it's worth I beat him with my Lucina

When it's sword-on-sword it basically comes down to reads and I had him down pat at that point

Didn't save the video of it

I do have a video of his Fox versus my Mac though; that fight was something special

Alright, got a bit of playtime in. I am seriously rusty from the Brawl days. Started out with Robin and I don't think that was the best idea. Lost badly in the board game, did Classic flawlessly until Falco showed up and I failed to unlock him because whoops fell off, then did a couple events. Swapped some button inputs around, so left trigger is Shield and right is Grab. Maybe now I can actually avoid some damage!

  • Options
I Win SwordfightsI Win Swordfights all the traits of greatness starlight at my feetRegistered User regular
Be sure to teach yourself to shield grab as well, though (shield + attack)

    And yeah don't play Robin

Not even as a beginner just... don't

Not unless you're a giant fire emblem fan who doesn't mind the slowest walk speed in the game, managing charges of spells and your good sword, and don't mind losing a lot

Robin requires a tremendous amount of investment to learn; Ness in comparison is brutally, brutally simple

They're probably the least beginner-friendly character in the game

But if you relaly like them then play them; I've fought Robins that would make your hair stand on end

I may not be the best to listen to in that respect, though; I have always mained Ganondorf when he was available, especially in Brawl

ness is not brutally simple, if only because his recovery special is so wacky.

i think ganondorf is really good in sm4sh and no one has been able to prove me wrong

like not top tier but i think in the right hands that character can definitely beat people who aren't like

ness is not brutally simple, if only because his recovery special is so wacky.

He just said "In comparison". Which says something about Robin, I suppose.

Not an easy main to learn. But there's nothing in the game as satisfying as a KO from a discarded book.

I like to think I'm getting good, and some of the tools available are beautiful, but Robin has some layers to get even competent.

  • Options
MadicanMadican No face Registered User regular
Yeah, Robin's just a bit too slow and I don't particularly like losing abilities if I use them too much. Might come back to him later once I get the basics mastered. My old main was Zelda. I think I'll give her a shot and see how she's changed. And yeah I know Shield Grab and the avoidance abilities. Doing better now that I can flick the buttons at will since my fingers rest naturally on the triggers, not the shoulder buttons.
