Well for strategy that can be paused and played in real time, theres not much I've played that's a direct match. Some RPG's have a somewhat similar system, KoToR, NWN, Bioware etc. For strategy, you could also try Silent Storm, probably the closest you will get.

Did you play both freedom forces?

I would check out the myth series for a good real time tactical game. No base building or anything. You are given a set amount of guys and need to kill many zombies and other badies with them and only them (sometimes reinforcements arrive, but not always)

I've been looking for something like this for a damn long time as well... I guess Ultimate Alliance was reasonably close? There seem to be very few games with a nice pause/strategize feature now, it seems. Perhaps because of the lack of multiplayer possibilities.

Edit: Oh oh! Yes, Myth. Ahhhh Myth. It's not quite the charming team tactics of FF, but it is small scale tactics game that can be slowed down or paused, and it is usually a set number of units that technically persist, even if all they really get is a nice kill counter. Plus it's just super good.

    And dwarves! Dwarves are amazing.

Man... early Bungie rocked so hard.

Man... Pre-Microsoft Bungie rocked so hard.

Fixed that for ya, but its a debate that has been gone over so many times its pointless.

    Really?

    What about Freedom Fighters?

They both have "Freedom" in them, so they've gotta be similar.
