ok, so weird little thing there. took a bounty to 'get 10,000XP without dying', only for it not to increase at all from kills. completing other bounties* however did contribute towards it, unlike with the old 9K XP bounty.
*went back to the Tower to turn these in and didn't see the option at the vendor. took me a sec to remember you can complete them from the menu.
Guess that definitively answers the questions about light still acting as a soft/hard gate. You can max out at 40 but if your light(item level) isn't high enough it still won't let you in.

My friend just told me he re-did the Black Garden quest line and was awarded:
A legendary, ascendable version of the strangers rifle

I just unlocked mine in-game using the Abandonned Quest system. I redid the quest chain and unlocked the new version of her rifle. Good stuff! I actually had some fun doing it.
Since I'm still downloading, I guess I'll give my thoughts on all the patch notes and balance changes and new exotics and all that. Spoilered for length:

EDIT: You don't get another Stranger's Rifle . I had already done the mission and deleted it a LONG time ago.
Look in the abandoned quest terminal down near Zavala (right side) you have to do the quest chain again.
One big complaint about the UI, they seemingly removed the different Factions Rep from the menu, I have everything else under Quests but not Dead Orbit, New Monarchy or Future War Cult.
It is extremely annoying not being able to see my rep when I'm trying to edge it for TTK.
Vanguard/Crucible marks were removed; I lost all of what I had...yet doing a couple trivial things rewarded me with them instead of Legendary marks. :rotate:
I thought they said they were putting in a whole screen just for factions?
Its under quests, but the 3 big factions arent there, I bought FWC's expensive gimmick and now I can see their rep, its near maxed... I want my glimmer back, I still cant see Dead Orbit or New Monarchy, why can I only change this stupid thing once per week?
I liked the old way better right now, then I could actually see what the fuck my rep is at all times, this shit feels a beta for factions right now.
I deleted the 2500 glimmer FWC allegiance thing so I dont rank up before next week and now I cant buy the New Monarchy one which is the lowest rep one I needed to raise, until next fucking week!?
So yeah, shotguns do not feel great. Did a quick PoE28 run and T2's are taking a whole clip to down, even when blasting their heads (thank you precision damage nerf on top of the gigantic damage nerf).

They said you could only change your allegiance once a week. Can you re-buy the FWC one?
Kinda funny/annoying that the new system supposedly allows you to wear a non-faction class item now, but then the new faction quest requires you to equip the faction emblem, shader and class item.

I have been quite happy to patiently wait for the legendary edition to hit next week and then I saw Fury Road and now I really want that Mad Max game.
But I am gritting my teeth and holding on for another week (it's been months since I got a new game, so I'm fairly bored).
Glad to hear all these changes seem to have made for a very improved experience. I imagine this will be like jumping into an MMO for the first time after they've released an expansion.

I believe the Year 2 version has that perk. Theoretically you could buy that version if you had Legendary Marks, which you can't get yet.
