Also on beverage dispensers with the push/lift mechanism, down is for controlled flowing, up, all the way up, is a lock so you can take your hand off for filling a larger container or draining the reservoir.

No where to go but up.

Wait, this is about water coolers specifically?

You can't do a handstand in zero g. At best, maybe you can do a human flag.

I have worked in a building with a water cooler for 6 years and did not know until this moment that you could push the lever down

This is partially why I flip it up as well, I use a large water bottle for drinking throughout the day

I had an RO growing up, so I learned that you press down if you only need to fill a cup and want it to release when you let go, and you push up if you're filling a jug and want to be able to let go and have it continue filling.

Not all valves like that are designed that way, but I can't unlearn that behavior now.

    This is the correct answer!

Fun fact: the ceiling is lighted and the floor is dark to keep you oriented on a space station.

On some water coolers, there's a blue tap for refrigerated water and a white tape for room temperature water, because the water cooler is literally a water cooler and has some refrigeration capability to it

    From a physics perspective,
Assuming an equal throw distance for both directions.

Less energy would be used going down because of the potential energy stored in the lever

Wouldn't it be the same either way, since most of the levers are spring-based? Or does gravity contribute to making pushing it down easier? Statics and Dynamics was... oh god, 5 years ago!

Yeah basically the acceleration of gravity would be helping you push it down while working against you to lift it.

You mean you don't all just carry around a drinkin' bucket?

Drinkin' bucket is the best because after it's empty, you can use it for activities.

In that case I should probably change my vote to !Up. All those microjoules of extra work (nanojoules?), will give me infinitesimally greater finger strength than the lazy downpushers!

What about when the hot water valve has a cover you must first lift up, then push the switch down to dispense?

Then whatever work you need to do to get the water is less than the work required to heat the water.

Also quit drinking instant that stuff is gross

I grind and brew my own but it's way easier to use the lava-hot water than to bring a kettle!
