Name this thing: electric edition

There is a metal box attached to a light in my cold storage room. Low voltage wires are hooked up to it and they go into the ceiling.

Bonus points if you can tell me what it is and don't have to look at the pic!

Looks like some kind of transformer maybe? Where do the wires hooked to it go?

Into the ceiling in the basement. It's fully finished so I'm not sure.

Total guess, but is that some sort of system by which they're grounding something from upstairs? Red is disconnected, but the ground(?) and negative(?) are running off to who knows where. It says 18v on the side though. It really looks like it's designed to BE grounded and perhaps someone thought it would be a handy way of grounding something else? Odd that it's a metal box and looks like something DC. Also, there's nothing that requires someone who fucked around with wiring actually used the correct colors or anything.

Whats the rest of the writing say? Kind of hoping some electrician comes in here because I'm really curious myself now.

...In looking around. It closely resembles a Class 2 Transformer.

It's a transformer. Probably is hooked up to the doorbell or a ventilation control would be my guess.

It's taking the 120 volt from the light and probably turning it into 24 v A.C power

    Also, that's ridiculous.

Hmmm doorbell would make sense because it's under the porch. Also the security system panel is right above.

As a licensed electrician, I'm 99% sure it's the transformer for your doorbell. Most electricians just mount them to a box exactly like that in the attic so nobody can see it. It's not a fire hazard or anything.

I have a similar device in my basement and it is for my doorbell. I presume yours is the same.
