I love that Rico could be defeated and the entire rebellion undone by seatbelts that fastened firmly with a lock, and tank hatches that could only open from the inside
Surely I'm not the only one who imagines the years of flight school and getting their masters in college, getting into a helicopter with their pilot liscence for the first time, putting their photo of their proud family on the dashboard, only to have ricos boots slam into the windscreen and unceremoniously yank you out to your death?
There is an occasional drop to 30-40 when things get busy , but it handles it well for the most part.
Going offline removed the vast majority of the stuttering. Still the occasional hitch, but I'll try dropping the textures to medium (and a couple of other options) and see what happens.
Thanks for the help guys.
It's crazy to me that the online stuff makes that much of a difference. That kind of thing really needs an on/off option in the settings because who even cares
e: another thing I've noticed is that literally all of my RAM is in use when I'm playing, so maybe that is causing an issue? Considering grabbing some extra RAM anyway since it's not the most expensive thing in the world.
Might want to try some other settings first, I know setting water detail down to medium removes some crazy high resource eating graphics feature. There was another setting or two that had deceptively high resource useage.
That said, upgrading my RAM completely fixed my stutters.
It was filled with constant loading in 3, but yeah it was there. Like with 2 it wasn't a good campaign but it was smooth, easy, and scaled up the action nicely with a suitably epic ending. It also had lots of little cool stuff like the Japanese soldiers and the blimp condo thing. This one just felt very tame and serviceable in comparison
Also I wish they had made it so you unlock things by doing then lots, like used the chaos system to actually have you unlock stuff. It's so dumb that they make you do arbitrary challenge things just to unlock kind of vital stuff, especially since they have a perfect,y good xp/score system right there going unused
Is there any reason to do story missions, as far as unlocking stuff or opening up new areas? Or can you just liberate the whole map without doing them, and get all unlocks by doing the challenges? I'm having a lot of fun just ignoring the missions, but don't want to make things unnecessarily difficult or miss out on gameplay stuff.

You get fast travel from one of the early missions and there are weapons and vehicles unlocked by doing story missions. You also need to progress in the story to disable the defenses at the central command bases.
I'm coming across the occupied bases now that immediately go to 3 stars and have helicopters show up. I die very quickly. Do I just need to get better at dealing with all that firepower coming at me so soon, or should I wait until I have access to better helicopters and weapons? Or do I need to take these bases out to get access to better helicopters? I just have the top 2 in the list unlocked so far.

My SOP on bases:
* Cause chaos until heavy support shows up, prioritizing hacking or destroying mobile SAMs.
* Hijack support (be it a helicopter or tank). Destroy the rest of the reinforcements - grappling helicopters together (or to the ground) and reeling them together is an excellent way of quickly taking them down.
* Blow everything else up. Repeat as necessary.
In a helicopter, you can fly low and hide behind existing structures to avoid SAMs. You can also circle-strafe around them, their tracking speed isn't great.

So I should start attacking them from the ground first? When I try to go at them from a helicopter other helicopters and SAMs tend to take me out or chase me away before I can do much. Does support just endlessly come, or are you safe for at least a bit after you take out all the initial helicopters?
Depends on the facility. I fly helicopters out to the oil rigs, and start bombarding them from as far away as I can get rockets to hit. The same can be done for initially strafing most bases, but you'll usually have to fly in close and search around for the last few generators or whatever. SAMs are there to prevent you from just being able to stroll in and roll bases without any resistance. Support will come in while you have an active star ranking (if they can't see you, it leads goes to Searching then eventually the alarm is cancelled).
Most of the time I start in a vehicle and wind up hoofing it for a bit. I play like evil Spider-man - heavy use of grappling and tethers, lots of mobility to keep myself safe, then jacking whatever's available when I have some breathing room.
I do the opposite, charge in on foot and prioritize hacking SAMs, then once all of them are taken care of I hulk out and start blowing everything up, and the SAMs take care of any incoming air support for me.
Yeah once you back the SAMs you're golden. Though I have made the mistake of hacking them, trying to jack a heli, and then being blown up by my friendly AA... Whoops.

Hahaha, I do this all the time.
Or I'll try to jack a helicopter and people will be shooting at it (or shooting at me and hitting it) so by the time I finally get into the thing it's already about to explode.

Which is why I don't try to get into them because that happens all the time.
They're flying coffins.
Blow em up and grapple wingsuit surf their corpse.
But I usually don't get into helicopters in the games that have them be available unless I actually want to fly somewhere in one.
And I don't need that in this game cos I can already fly!

True, though infinite missles is a big plus for helis. I love attacking the oil rigs and just bombarding them with missle-rain. Plus you can finish the whole thing in like 30 seconds and fly away unscathed.

I always check the rigs after liberating them because they seem to have the best heavy weapons.

But that means I don't get to fly around in the wingsuit taking them out the fun way.
I did do that once though, taking it out quickly.

The way the heat system spawns enemy boats right next to you after fleeing over the formerly-empty ocean, thus immediately spotting you again, while simultaneously radioing "dispatching naval units" really irritates me.
Oh the vehicles! Shit. I forgot about them though they're not actually listed in the collectibles section in the stats menu. Don't think they count towards progression total.

i think it's pretty much essential to 5 star some of the boat races.
Yeah
There's a trophy for 5 starring everything
Good luck

The way I got the Squallo (which I would not recommend as its a giant pain) was to tether it to one of the heavy helicopters and carry it very slowly and carefully to the bay east of the lake it's in.
A better way is to take it overland using tethers. You go north up the road a little ways, then head kind of northeast. It's a long way but a fairly gentle slope and much easier than trying to manage tethers from a chopper.

The progress screen definitely has a section for what vehicles you've brought to the garage.

I tried moving it with the huge plane with the cargo bay. It went pretty well until I was landing and crashed into a gas station. I haven't been back to try again.

Hm, I tried with the big blue helicopter and couldn't get it to lift off. Will have to try again, it's my last vehicle.
I JUST UNLOCKED NOIR MODE! This is a complete surprise. Spoilers for how it works
Collect all Audio tapes and unlock the golden Copter. As soon as you rebel drop it you get a mission to take out a spy. Finish that and you unlock this mode. It's just black and white mode really.
Nothing amazing but I found it out myself and it's a rare thing that I get to see something without having been spoiled!
I noticed a minor thing that can help in some destruction frenzies. Large chaos objects with multiple parts don't count as anything until fully destroyed, so you can partially destroy them before starting the timer and then easily finish them when you have a full combo.
If anyone else is confused about the leaderboards including a bunch of random strangers, it turns out that's something you can disable in the options.

Most large objects can be destroyed really fast if you attack their supporting struts. You gotta pepper one of those big ball tanks for ages with a machine gun before it blows up. Or you can take out three of its struts in a few seconds and its destroyed.
Same for a basic standing fuel tank. You could pepper the tank full of bullets....or you could shoot the control panel next to it, which gets destroyed in a couple of bullets and will cause the oil tank to blow up soon after.

If you have the proximity upgrade all you have to do is drop off.

Go on rampage until a hidden SAM shoots me down.

I know I can 5* the wingsuit courses but them races are gonna be tough. Not even thinking about the frenzy challenges.
Which I don't know if you remember but it started as a tech demo and ended up as a photography game.

Oh wait I platinumed prototype.
Other than that one then.
