Pokemon: [Phalla] Road
An Obi-Phalla Adventure, co-hosted by @Matev where you shape a world with persistent characters and your knowledge about other players matters from game to game.

Scenario
Story so far...

A new Region was discovered and trainers from all over the world flocked to be a part of the initial expedition into the untouched pokemon landscape. Named Arcadia, the new region seemed to contain every known pokemon. Thirty-nine trainers came in the first expedition and these Trainers battled, explored, and captured all types of pokemon. After the region had been sufficiently explored, the Pokemon League ran a tournament to discover who would be crowned the first Champion of Arcadia. @”enlightenedbum”, a member of Team Rocket, emerged victorious. As a result, Team Rocket gained more control and power over Arcadia than any previous region.

After a year of Team Rocket rule, Pokemon in the area are very distrustful of trainers! Newly captured pokemon start off scared of their Trainers. This distrust has even spread to trained pokemon who after seeing the state of the region lose happiness much more rapidly than before.

The Pokemon League requires that each region allow any trainer to challenge the local gyms and Elite Four in an attempt to dethrone the sitting Champion. Team Rocket foolishly fought this requirement and almost had Arcadia removed from the League. The Champion did not want to lose his title, so he took as many of the Gym Leaders and Elite Four as he could and left Team Rocket. No doubt Team Rocket has doubled their efforts to regain their now lost region.

The Arcadia region is now open to all trainers to battle in their gyms, take on the Elite Four, and possibly even the Champion himself! Believe in yourself, trainers! Love your pokemon and you can be the best!

The Pokemon team you ended up with in the last game is the team you will have at the beginning of this game. The Pokemon team you end up with in this game is the team you will start with in the next. The things you discover and the information you share about your trainer, pokemon, and their powers will carry over. The results of this game will determine roles, powers, general story, and more of the next Pokemon Phalla. Play wisely.

Game Overview

Genre: Factions infiltrated by informed Mafia with a heavy dose of interactivity and choice for all. The game was created so that everyone would have something to do and could play a very important part in their side's eventual victory or defeat. At its heart it is still a Phalla game, Penny Arcade Forum's version of the party game Mafia. If this is your first game, it will be informative to visit the linked topic for some background information.

Special Mechanics and Game Design

This is an ObiPhalla. Beware and be excited. Some basics about what I generally do and do not do in my games:
1) I do not like straight seering. I prefer for the village to have to work together to root out the mafia. If at all possible, networks should not be necessary if everyone pays attention and works together in the thread.
2) I hate mechanics that reward or do not punish an inactive mafia. Most of my games require the mafia to be active and work to muddy the waters and/or stay hidden. Mistakes or poor choices in the side games can and very often do reveal them.
3) There will be a fairly heavy "side-game" (in this case the Adventure Board) that rewards powers or, as is the case with this game, helps determines the winner of the game as a whole. This side game should also be used by the village to help root out the mafia and for the mafia to cause problems in that information process. These side games never have enough information to find the entire mafia on their own.

With all that being said, here are the things unique to this game (new or changed mechanics are marked with a "!!!"):

The Adventure Board
There is be a proboard that will from here on out be referred to as the Adventure Board. You will be asked to signup on a proboard using your Trainer Name. You will be granted access to the subforum for the area of the map (see Trainer Actions) you currently reside. All secrets are discovered on this forum and the only way to know which trainers are definitely in your area is to visit this board as well. Additionally, this forum can be used to PM other trainers regardless of if they are in your area or not. Beware that letting someone know your forum/trainer name combination can be dangerous as the game population will now know how best to beat you in the tournament, if you have discovered any secrets, etc. This information will also carry over to the next game(s) as well.

!!!!Rivals
Every trainer will be given a rival. If you defeat your rival, you will be given information that can help your faction win the game. It is not required that you beat your rival to win the game.

!!!Trainer Actions
Your trainer can take one basic action per night as well as move along a single path to another area. The following describes basic actions and movement:
Basic Actions (one per night):
  • Challenge - Target another trainer and have your pokemon battle against your target. Choose one of your pokemon, it will evolve when the night is over. If you lose, your pokemon all lose 1 happiness.
  • Explore - Increase all of your pokemons' happiness by one, learn a secret of the area.
  • Capture - Gain a random pokemon in the area. After you get your results, you can choose a pokemon to place it in your lineup, send it to your pokebox, gift it to a player/trainer, or release it to the wild. If you need more than one pokemon to fill out a team you will gain two pokemon.
  • Rest - All your pokemon are revived and cleared of all status effects. Gain a random item. You gain access to your Pokebox.

Map & Movement (once per night)
go2qq0jvl3w9.jpg

The above map represents the Arcadia Region. Every trainer will start in one of the 10 main unexplored areas (the red nodes on the map). You can move along a single path from one red node to another red node each night or name a trainer and move as close to them as possible (including following them). Ignore the grey locations, they are not used in this game. Movement doesn't happen until the very end of order of operations, so you will not escape challenges by movement. Additionally, any exploration will happen before movement, so exploration results will be from the area you were in before moving.

Battles
Battles are done by comparing the the Challenger's pokemon against the Defender's pokemon, position by position. If a pokemon is unable to fight, the opposing pokemon automatically wins. In each case, the pokemon with the more effective attack is considered to be the winner. If there is a tie in attack effectiveness, then the pokemon with the greatest happiness is considered the winner. The Trainer with the most victorious pokemon is considered the winner of the Battle. Attack Effectiveness is determined from the following Type Chart. In the case of dual type pokemon compare each attacking type with each defending type and then multiply the effectiveness to determine the total effectiveness.

Pokemon
All 718 Pokemon (minus a few legendaries being held back for the next game) are available in the game. You will use them to win battles, gain advantage in map exploration, help other trainers, and ultimately win the Tournament. All non-legendary pokemon can be captured in the area that matches their type. If a player happens to find a Legendary pokemon, they may only have one Legendary pokemon at a time. The following are sections specific to Pokemon:

Evolution and Abilities
When pokemon evolve, they will gain an ability. If a pokemon is dual-typed, the trainer can choose which of the two types you want the Pokemon’s ability to be. Challenging other trainers is the most obvious way to evolve your pokemon, but there are other ways to do it as well. Some pokemon abilities require targeting. Use of these abilities should be sent in with your Order PM. Any ability that doesn't mention targeting does not need to be activated to use and will be used when appropriate.

Status Effects
Pokemon can have any combination of the below status effects. Negative status effects are cleared through the Full Heal item, some pokemon abilities, and the Rest Action:
  • Ready - This Pokemon will fight in challenges tonight and you can use any abilities they have.
  • Knocked Out - Pokemon are knocked out if they take an Effective attack or greater. When a pokemon is knocked out, they lose all other statuses and you can not use any of their abilities. This status can be reversed with a revive item, being your "Favorite!", taking a Rest action, or being in the tournament while it is active.
  • Burn - This pokemon’s attack are half as effective. This only takes effect after the battle in which it is applied.
  • Paralyzed (A/I) - This pokemon will be unable to fight and use their abilities every other night, starting the night after they received this status. For clarity, a pokemon will still fight in the battle it is paralyzed, but will be unable to fight the next night. So you don't have to track the effect: “A” denotes the pokemon will be able to fight that night, “I” denotes that the pokemon will be unable to fight that night.
  • Frozen (X) - This pokemon will not be able to fight and use their abilities for the next X nights or any other battle that night.
  • Poisoned - Any pokemon that fights this pokemon will be twice as effective in their attacks.
  • Cursed - The next time this pokemon knocks out another pokemon, it is also knocked out as well.

Happiness
Your pokemon's happiness is very important and will fluctuate as perform daily actions and other events happen. After you get your Role PM with your stable of Pokemon, you will choose one to be your "Favorite!" This can not be changed except by using a Candy or if you choose to release your "Favorite!" after capturing a new pokemon. The following describes the levels of happiness you pokemon can have:
  • 1: Detest - This is a little hard for me to say... Your Pokémon simply detests you. Doesn’t that make you uncomfortable?
  • 2: Scared - It’s very wary. It has a scary look in its eyes. It doesn’t like you much at all.
  • 3: Neutral - It’s not very used to you yet. It neither loves nor hates you.
  • 4: Happy - It's warming up to you. That's my impression. This pokemon can not be stolen.
  • 5: Very Close - You two sure get along great! It looks like you are having fun being together! You seem bright and cheerful! This pokemon can not be stolen.
  • 6: Favorite! - What great friends you are! It's so nice how you trust each other! It makes me kinda jealous! This pokemon will resist being stolen and will automatically be revived (due to the power of friendship!) upon being knocked out.

Items
You will start with a single Revive and a random item of the following list. All of the following items are consumed upon use.
  • Revive (common) - Change a pokemon from knocked out to ready. Their happiness is reset to neutral.
  • Lucky Egg (rare) - Evolve a second pokemon when winning a challenge
  • Escape Rope (rare) - Avoid the first challenge in a night.
  • Lure (common) - Choose a pokemon while capturing. If they are in the area, you will capture it.
  • TMXX (uncommon) - Give to any evolved or unevolvable pokemon, they will lose their current move and learn this move instead. Evolving a pokemon will cause them to forget this move
  • Pokeball Belt (extremely rare) - Switch your team lineup order
  • Full Heal (common) - Remove all status effects from one pokemon
  • Candy (uncommon) - Increase a Pokemon's happiness by 2. You may also choose the Pokemon given this to be your "Favorite!". Your old "Favorite!"'s happiness reverts to neutral.

!!!Held Items
Pokemon can hold items that may boost their attack. Finding these are difficult and it is even more difficult to train your pokemon to hold on to them. A trainer can only have one of their pokemon hold an item at a time. Held items can be traded to other players.

!!!Pokebox
During Day 0 or when you choose the "Rest" action, you will then gain access to your pokebox. You can send any or all of the pokemon currently in your team to your pokebox and then choose pokemon from your pokebox to replace those pokemon. If you played in the first game and are so inclined, you may go through the results you received and give me a list of all pokemon that you released into the wild and I will add those pokemon to your pokebox before Day 0. Pokemon come out of the pokebox being scared.

!!!Trading
You may send the host as many trade PMs per day as you want. Once you send in a trade PM, however, it can not be altered. The trade PM must be sent as a reply to your Role PM and may contain trades with multiple players. You may NOT put conditional statements on your trade requests. The conditions can be as detailed or vague as you want them to be. An example Trade PM:
Kime - I give him 1x Revive
Assuran - I give him 2x Escape Rope
Langly - I give him [Pokemon Name]

Communication
There will be two main places for communication about the game: This thread and the Adventure Board(tm) that will be linked to you in your role PM. This thread is where voting will occur. Being removed from this thread (through vigging or vote) means you can no longer post in this thread, use PA PMs, or any other method to communicate with players about the game EXCEPT the Adventure Board. Ghost posting is not allowed. No matter what happens, however, you can always post in the Adventure board. Any powers that work within the adventure board can continue be used as after Pokemon League removal as well. To be clear, if you are voted out or killed in the main thread, you can continue to train, explore, challenge, trade, etc, and even PM other players on (and only on) the Adventure Board.

Voting
There will be regular votes to remove a player from the Pokemon League. Vote for the player whose removal will most benefit your Pokemon Team (faction) by making a post with their name in bold red. There is no vote required on the Adventure Board. You may retract a vote by posting "!retract vote for <player name>" or similar phrase in bold limegreen or change your vote by making another one in bold red. Do not, under any circumstance, edit a post that has a vote. If an edit is necessary, make a new post instead. The player who receives the most votes will be permanently removed from the Pokemon League. Should there be a tie in the vote, then all players involved in the tie will be eliminated, as well as the player that instigated the tie, whether that be due to a vote being placed or a vote being removed. If the vote winner is eliminated before the vote is resolved, there will be no "trickle down".

Voting will close each day at 10PM Pacific (UTC - 7:00) SHARP; any votes before the hour (x:59) will count, any votes on the hour and later (x:00) will not.

Orders
Every player should have orders to submit and they must be submitted before vote close. Any orders received after XX:59 will not be accepted. All orders must be submitted as a response to your Role PM unless otherwise approved by the host.

Signing Up
Sign up with the phrase "I !sign up" or similar phrase in bold limegreen or other bright, easily visible color to ensure that your intent to play is acknowledged. I will also need you to PM me the following information:
1) Trainer Name. This should not be easily traceable to you as it will be the name that you post under on the proboards and your permanent Trainer name for all future Obi-phalla Pokemon games.
2) Trainer Focus. Choose one of the Trainer focuses:
  • Fighter - Your pokemon don't lose happiness when you lose a challenge.
  • Explorer - You can explore adjacent areas during your turn. Gain a random item while exploring.
  • Collector - When capturing, you are given the choice of two pokemon and have a chance to find evolved pokemon. Captured pokemon start at Neutral Happiness.
3) Starting Location - You can start on any numbered location except for the Tower of Champions

Signups will be open until I feel ready to run the game. The more players the better, but I would like to get at least 40.

Inactivity
It is expected that players make at least two posts (one of which must be a vote) in this thread, submit private actions, and post at least once on the Adventure Board. A warning will be sent on the first day that this requirement is not met, and a replacement will be made on the second consecutive day of inactivity or third day overall. If there are no replacements available, then the player will be eliminated from the game.

Clarifications
Any questions about the general game rules may be made by highlighting the question in bold darkorange text. Answers will be posted in the thread and collected in the below section. Player-specific inquiries that are not addressed in the general rules may be asked via PM to the host. Questions asked in the thread and their answers will be reposted in this section.

Order of Operations: Exploration Rewards -> Item Use/Trading -> Pokemon Trading -> Trainer/Pokemon abilities -> Challenges -> Movement

    Sample vanillager PM:
Day 1 Status PM for ObiFett

    NIGHT 0 RESULTS

    STATUS
    Trainer - Boba
    Location - Steamy Ponds
    Items - Revive (1), Full Heal (1)
    Rival - Obi
Explorer - You can use the explore action on adjacent areas. Gain a random item while exploring.
    Faction - [Faction Name] (Village)
Trainer Abilities - [Abilities Listed Here]
Wincon - [Faction Name] is the first team to complete the following steps in order:
1: Gain all 8 Badges by defeating each Gym Leader. Defeating a Gym Leader will award their badge to your entire faction. Faction members who have been voted out or vigged can still gain Badges for their faction by defeating Gym Leaders on the Adventure Board. Voting out a Gym Leader gives their badge to all factions.
2: Defeat each member of the Elite Four. Defeating a member of the Elite Four counts as defeating that Elite Four for your entire faction. Faction members who have been voted out or vigged who then defeat a member of the Elite Four on the Adventure Board still count as contributed to this step. Voting out a member of the Elite Four counts as defeating that member of the Elite Four for all factions.
3: Defeat the Champion. Voting out the Champion does not help any faction complete this step. Only players who have not been voted out or vigged can complete this step for their faction.

    Clarifications:
    From the First Game -
    SLyM wrote: »
There's nothing from keeping you from saying who you are on the adventure proboard and what you knew after you're dead correct?
Correct. People can claim whatever they want on the adventure board. Be aware that any truth or lies told in this game can haunt or help you in the next since trainer name and final pokemon team will carry over to the next game
    SLyM wrote: »
is there any rule about editing posts after dead to prove your identity on the adventure board?
Once you are dead, like any phalla game, you should not interact in any way with the game thread here on PA. That should include editing posts.
    SLyM wrote: »
are pokemon abilities used inside of battle, outside of battle, or both?
    Both
    SLyM wrote: »
can we change our trainer focus/location after signing up?
You can continue to edit your name, location, and focus up until the game officially starts.
The only difference between an unevolved and evolved pokemon is their ability, yes? For example, a Happy Zubat will beat a Scared Crobat barring abilities?
    yes
If a Collector finds an evolved dual-type pokemon in the wild, do they choose which ability the pokemon will have (as though they had evolved it in their party) or will the ability be randomized?
    Ability will be randomized
If two trainers battle with an unequal number of pokemon, does the trainer with more pokemon have an advantage?
Yes, because they would get an automatic point from one of their pokemon automatically getting a win
For example, Elijah has 5 pokemon and StinkyBagel has 4. Does Elijah get a point because StinkyBagel's fifth pokemon is unable to fight (as it doesn't exist) or is the battle only a 4v4?
You can only have 3 pokemon at a time.
    Bedlam wrote: »
    Are pokemon tradable?
    Yes
    Bedlam wrote: »
Does having 3 pokemon limit your acquisition of new pokemon?
No, you can still gain new pokemon when you have a full team of 3. Every pokemon you gain can either be set free or put into a position on your team (setting free any pokemon in that position).
    KetBra wrote: »
    Are fossils a thing?

If we are eliminated from the tournament can we still explore the world and collect pokemon, items, etc?
You sure can! You can continue to build/train your team, trade, explore, solve puzzles, etc in preparation for the next game.
    MrTLicious wrote: »
    Do items carry over?
From night to night? Yes. From this game to the next? Yes.

All items are consumed upon use, though.

    MrTLicious wrote: »
How many times can your pokemon evolve?
The below link details if a pokemon can evolve and how many evolutions are possible for it. The information in that link is what I am going by when determining if a pokemon can evolve and what it will evolve to (added to OP)
    http://bulbapedia.bulbagarden.net/wiki/List_of_Pokémon_by_evolution_family
    discrider wrote: »
How do Pokémon with multiple evolution paths evolve? Is it random what Pokémon Eevee evolves into, or are there multiple conditions determining the outcome or does the owner decide?
If there are multiple paths a Pokemon can evolve along the trainer can decide what it evolves to. Otherwise it will be a random path.
    Bedlam wrote: »
Can you press B to stop a pokemon's evolution?
Evolutions can be stopped if the trainer wishes.
Just to verify, if you issue a challenge and lose, do you still get to evolve a pokemon?
Correct. The reward of challenging another trainer, win or lose, is that you can evolve a pokemon.
What information is given out about the challenges? Will we see the pokemon used by both players? Will we see the exact outcome (Saber wins 2-1) will we just see who wins? Is this posted publicly in narration or privately in PMs?
Battle results will be sent in the daily status PM using the template:
[Attacker name] [result] [Defender name] ([position winner]* - [position winner] - [position winner])

*"A" for attacker, "D" for defender

    Sample Result:
    Boba defeated Saber (A-D-A)
What happens if multiple people challenge the same person? Is the damage for the KO status added up from all the challenges? What determines which of the challenges goes first?
Damage for KO status is on a battle by battle basis. Challenges go in order of Order PM timestamp.
    MrTLicious wrote: »
can a pokemon's type change on evolution? If not, what is the point?
Pokemon abilities are based on evolution level
    discrider wrote: »
Can only a Collector catch a Pikachu?
CD. But the only way listed in the current OP's set of knowledge to catch a Pikachu is to be a Collector.

    discrider wrote: »
How do baby Pokémon work? Is a Pikachu considered the unevolved Pokémon or is the Pichu? Will an evolved Pikachu differ from a non-evolved Pikachu?
Pikachu is considered to be an evolved Pichu

If you happen to get a Pikachu without evolving it, then yes it will be the same as an unaltered Pikachu that someone evolved.

You can PM me a new Trainer Name or a new Specialization or both or neither.

If I don't get a PM then your information will just be the same as last game.

You didn't auto sign me up? For shame!

That said, my classes start next week, so I will not be nearly as obsessive about this as I was the first one. Hopefully I'll have time to devote to this before things get really nuts.

Damn you Obi, you couldn't wait a week! When do you expect this to actually start? I'd hate to miss it but I'm getting married on Sunday so I don't expect I'll have any time to play this until after that.

there is still language about a Tournament, but there aren't the same mechanics that were in place for the tournament last game. Is there a tournament or is that just from the old OP

This will not start until Monday for sure. I have lots of code testing still to do.

No, trainers can still only handle one Legendary at a time.

No, pokebox technology has not yet progressed to be able to sufficiently hold the strength of Legendary pokemon.

If we try to pokebox a Legendary, does it evolve into a Missingno?

For purposes of pokebox tracking from last game, if you were a collector, does the other pokemon you didn't catch count as releasing into the wild? What about if you picked neither pokemon?
