This is not that uncommon, from what I can tell. The current generation of high performance cars have an insane amount of raw power and it's pretty easy to lose control of that much car if you're not experienced enough.
There was an asshole driving a Mustang on roads that had just been rained on when I was droving last night and when he was shifting he felt the need to get everyone's attention by gunning the engine and he started to fishtail but got it back under control.
I was rather cross with him.

I tend to hate Mustangs and their owners for shit like that. A younger coworker of mine recently bought at ZL1 and that's his primary vehicle for the upcoming Indiana winter. He's nuts.

Rear wheel drive is a rough life at times in the snow, but it can be done...especially in the modern era where traction control is a thing.

It's a ZL1, I have my doubts traction control is going to compensate very well for 580hp at the rear.
My brother had a 2004 Lincoln LS and he managed to get through the winters here in Wisconsin. Of course this had something like ~200 less hp and ~500 pounds of sand in the trunk, but he managed.

Oh, and a little Protip: Never buy a Lincoln.
He lies. He's a liar. Don't listen to the McConaughey

Car's engine looks totaled but he should be fine, with a sore neck.
EDIT: But seriously, glad he's okay.
