Jackson Pollock is probably the most famous American painter to have ever lived, and certainly among the most divisive. He moved to New York in the late 1930s, when he was still imitating Picasso and working in representative forms. Slowly he began to drift towards more abstract images, often incorporating geometry equations and materials like sand, crushed glass, and painting with no direct visual cues about where they begin or end. It wasn't until he took a print making class that he you can see nods towards his mature style, the "drip" painting that he later became known for.

While his work has largely been criticized becuase, "it could be done by anyone," all who witnessed Pollock painting remarked that he was a different person while painting. Quiet, not particularly graceful, photographers, and filmmakers described his technique as a kind of ballet as he dripped, threw, and splatter paint, working with his canvas stretched across the floor. His brush often never touched the canvas.

Allowing people to capture him painting was ultimately part of his downfall. At the height of his fame, when Life ran an article asking, "Is he the most famous painter in America?". he allowed himself to be filmed and photographed. Immediately after the shoot, which lasted several days, he went inside his Long Island home and got violently drunk after being sober for two years. He changed his style, largely abandoning what had made him so famous.

also i've been reflecting on the strike thing

if i were an employee and i was striking because i felt mistreated or undervalued by my employer, i might could be upset to see others crossing the line, effectively undermining the only powerful measure i have to be taken seriously by my employer

but trying to be empathetic like that, i still can't take the leap to 'be a huge fucking dick to the scab' who is also trying to do the best thing for his or her family

so ultimately my guilt has risen very minutely but has resolved to me not being troubled much

funny that you post this. beasto and i were just in the Met on Sunday, in the modern section, and when we came across Autumn Rhythm and he started to say "Honestly, i don't get it..." and I was like "Just...read Harold Rosenberg's essay."

If there is a phrase that will instantly destroy your good will with who you are talking to more than "I pay your salary" I have not found it. Its the way to turn any customer service interaction into the worst one every time.

    this is super helpful!

i am finishing up this book

and all of this is research for my current writing project (as my tumblr art project)

well if this is helpful, this came up while i was looking for a full text of "American Action Painters" and I think it is a very good snapshot of the schools of thought that were forming during the height of american modernism in the 50s-60s

What I get a lot as a bouncer is "you're losing a good customer"

oh, shit, you and your mate aren't going to buy the four beers you were gonna buy, how ever will we manage

generally people have a really hard time realizing that they are not in any way important. You are a perfectly average customer, or, well, you were until we had to have this conversation. And there's thousands like you out there so good bye.

I don't go that far, but some people think that's a huge trump card when I've only ever taken that phrase to be the nuclear weapon of a conversation. Once played you have to either get transferred to someone else or hang up, the interaction has been annihilated.
