For all the 'Boss talks more during cassettes' claim, he hasn't said much at all in the late game ones. Not even participating in the Burger Saga. Tsk, tsk.

Also, the end of Chapter 43 was emotional to say the least. Even better in context.

what's the trick to fighting the skulls in mission 48? I tried bringing a tank but to get in position you're already sacrificing a lot of armor.

If you have the Brennan Sniper rifle, it takes big chunks out of their rock armored HP, but is not quite so efficient once their armor is off. Still, it lets you fight them from long distance. If you get to a hangar rooftop, the flying rock attacks pretty much all fail, and you just have to be attentive with the ground eruptions. By far the easiest way for me to win this mission is to bring Quiet along with the Brennan researched on her, provided you are ok with her murdering literally everything in the area. Don't count on getting any extractions on the zombified soldiers if you do that. Weapons that have high damage but poor penetration numbers (e.g. shotguns) fare very poorly against their armored HP.

I've also had success with using D-Walker with the minigun. You can zoom away from engagements, and they have a habit of doing the "stand still and puff out metallic archaea" no matter how close/far you are from them. Take advantage of that as an opportunity to shred them with the minigun. Sadly, the CQC arm doesn't seem very effective against them, nor does the electroshock cannon thing.

Trying to fight them straight up is quite hard because their machine guns do crazy damage even if you have the battle suit equipped, and the flying rocks are often a OHKO: the first rock knocks you down, the second rock kills you. The ground eruptions are OHKO.

48 is Extreme Code Talker, not Metallic Archaea!
The trick is total stealth. I had zero successful attempts at fighting the Sniper Skulls once they alerted. Their teleport melee attack is a dealbreaker, as they can hit you from outside the counter range with very little warning. Stick to the river, crawl around using the long rocks for cover, use the heaviest antimateriel rifle you have to pop their heads. You kill 2 at the river, then slooowly make your way up the hill to kill the one over looking the edge. Then get one hit on the last one, and run past it to Fulton the bodies of the 3 dead. Return to the fourth, it'll be looking the wrong way! Finish it off, Fulton it for the full set.

yeah, the teleport stab thing is hella cheap in 48.

They hit DD and I want revenge and then I'm out in the open but oh yeah, they have magic aiming now hitting me mid run and leap into prone.

    Extreme Metallic Archaea:
I sniped them to death the first time, just for the challenge. Smoke grenades + NVG make it relatively easy.

Once, during the fight, one of the skulls teleported to me and slashed me or whatever. It didn't kill me and I still won the battle but it literally scared the shit out of me. I was using the big rock for cover and smoke was everywhere and suddenly I see a slow moving silhouette moving toward me with no warning from the smoke. It reminded me of The Ring or It Follows. There's something seriously disturbing about an enemy just slowly walking toward you that I find very fucking scary.

Anyway, I literally jumped in my seat.

    I S ranked 48
By following the river all the way on the right side then climbing up the cracks in the cliffs that leads behind them and sneaking into the mansion. Avoided the skulls completely. Don't go over the bridge, go under the waterfall on the far left. Sneak up on the left side past the dude with the light, then around the back. Sleep the two guards near the door, carry them away and fulton them, then sneak into the mansion and down to code talker. Do it fast enough you don't have to worry about being seen by anyone else.
On the way back after grabbing code talker, sprint past the puppet zombies that will be near the entrance to the mansion, don't worry they don't count for alerts, then head back sticking to the right side (not along the river this time, stick to the right relative to the direction you are facing).
As you head down to the waterfall there will be a skull positioned that will have a laser sight that passes over the water fall during her search, be sure to wait until it passes by. I don't think she can see you behind the water, but better to be safe than sorry. Just wait behind the rock on one side of the water fall, then when the laser sight moves into the forest quickly carry code talker through it. Once you are on the other side rocks will block her view.
When you go under the waterfall you'll get to a ledge you can't step up on while carrying code talker. Throw him onto the ledge, then climb up and pick him up.
Then hug the cliffs. You'll go straight under a skull. Don't breathe. I've done this twice and she's never seen me, but be extra careful.
There will be puppet soldiers in clumps as you progress, a couple of them are close enough that they might be able to see you if they are facing your direction. What I did was wait until they turned away. It doesn't take long, they randomly move around a lot.
I didn't try to distract them, I was worried the skull directly above me might look down.
Once you get past the forest and into the open, you are in the clear. Call down the chopper just before you leave the forest.
You should get S rank on time and perfect stealth. If you get seen, you probably wont get it. Restart.
Bring D-dog, he's really helpful for sneaking back through the forest.

For actually fighting them for the objective.
I brought the item that lets you mark enemies and an underbarrel smoke launcher on my assault rifle.
I found a nice rock on the left side where they couldn't see me and their laser sights kept getting blocked by trees.
If I could see them, I'd mark them from behind cover. Then I'd lie down and pop smoke on myself and shoot them with nvg through the smoke.
If they moved and I couldn't see them, I'd pop a nova and shoot them through the smoke using the blue mark. It will mark them no matter where they are on the map. I took them down one at a time, focusing on them.
I don't remember if I had to counter their teleport slice or not, because I was in smoke basically the whole time and it was a couple of weeks ago.
Anyway, they can't see through the smoke so as long as you got smoke on your position and nvg, you can see them and they can't see you.
NVG will also let you see them when they try to teleport up to you, when they go "invisible" they're actually still just walking, you can see them clear as day and move towards them a bit just as they come in to make sure you hit the counter. Be sure that you are still covered in smoke from the others.
If you want to, you can probably bring a grenade launcher and just pop them as they come in on you. I haven't tried this, they might ignore it. Give it a go if you want, let me know if it works.

Sometimes they will have their laser sight blocked by tree top leaves. If their laser sight is blocked like this, they can't see you at all, but you can see them. You can even mark through the leaves, follow their laser sight back and use the microphone to listen for their weird ass breathing. You don't need smoke if this happens, although be careful that one of the others can't see you. Then you can just shoot straight through the leaves.
This is why I like the rock on the left side, a little bit forwards. It has several big trees with spreading branches, a big fat circle of leaves that blocks a lot of their favorite sniping positions.

If you are out of smoke, and things are desperate, and one of them has a bead on you, all you need to do is slide along the rock about a meter or two and pop up. When they are focused on your last position they wont see you pop up (be cautious, you might not have moved far enough). Then you can take your time to sight on them.

If worst comes to worst, you can use the old pop up, make them shoot, duck down, then pop up and shoot them trick. Just be careful not to stand up too quickly straight into their shot.

So far the best next-level stealth strategy I've heard of for any situation involves grabbing a jeep/truck, dropping smoke grenades into the vehicle and then driving with it. You can "sneak up" or "sneak through" all kinds of things because enemies can't see you in the smoke.

Yeah, it's cool that you can do it, but because the jeep/truck is faster than the smoke and is in clear view, it looks really bad/glitchy/weird/offputting. So I don't do it except for lols. I like to try and keep things visually aesthetically pleasing. Short sighted guards notwithstanding.

For most Skulls I go for Leeroy Jenkins kung-fu style, getting up close and baiting out melee attacks, then using the counter stun time to unload with a semi-automatic sniper rifle repurposed for point-blank shooting.
Finally unlocked myself a ridiculous 75-round drum magazine for it too

It's stupid-fun to get right, I want to record it someday :P

For the sniper ones, the rocks on the river bank provide direct cover from the first 2, allowing you to peek and counter-snipe them at your leisure. The last two can be tackled similarly, with peeking vantage points along the sides of the map.

Quiet. She has it before Skullface ever shows off the canister with the samples. The third one is gone even during the WOAHOOOO jeep ride, Venom just doesn't notice. It's weird cause he reacts to the missing one later by saying "there were three, where's the other?" when, no, he only showed you two earlier.

So I finished the game a while ago and have a lot of thoughts. If there's time I'll try to compose a brief summary later.

Mostly popping in here now to point out in case anyone else was unaware (like I was) that the FOB events that we keep getting notifications appear to at least sometimes involve invading a computer-controlled FOB. The most recently completed event, New World Order, mentioned in the blurb that you can invade a rival FOB without fear of retaliation. When I read that I thought it just meant you could invade a player-controlled FOB and they wouldn't be able to retaliate, which I had no interest in doing. But it turns out the invasion target was some computer-generated faction named Kill Count. Pretty nice if you want to do an FOB invasion without making some poor guy who probably didn't want to be involved in PvP in the first place but had no choice feel bad. Long story short, I did all 7 platform invasions the day before the event ended and was rewarded with 1 new S++ recruit and 3 S+ recruits.

The one downside to this is now that I have successful FOB invasions on my record my Espionage score has apparently bumped up to the point where I show up as an invasion target for other active invaders, whereas before I was in that giant pool of 0 invasion attempts. So yesterday while I was offline my fully upgraded FOB was successfully invaded. I had 1 attempt in the months prior. Not a huge deal though; lost stuff that could be reclaimed in a single offline mission.

Anyway, hopefully these types of events will continue. I like the concept of invading an FOB, just not at the expense of another player.

  • SoundsPlushSoundsPlush yup, back. Registered User regular
Speaking of FOBs...should I build one? What's that about it stealing everyone's resources? I feel like my research levels are pretty slow, so if FOBs add another 100 to the R&D department, that'd be a big jump. You can't get invaded if you haven't invaded anyone?

    s7Imn5J.png
  • StormwatcherStormwatcher Blegh BlughRegistered User regular
You should, it dramatically increases your soldier and material caps, and makes all resource collection and processing go much faster. I don't think you can reach the higher levels for each department without them, so you can't research all guns and items without a FOB.

Yeah, even if you have no plans of doing FOB infiltrations, raising the soldier caps is a huge deal, and I recommend getting that one free FOB. The only downside is the resources and GMP generated by the FOB will become unavailable when you're offline, so you'll need to reconnect when you wake up from rest mode.

  • Phoenix138Phoenix138 ArizonaRegistered User regular
Would definitely recommend building that free FOB. For the most part any resources that are stolen are the additional resources that are generated by that FOB. (Someone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.) The other risk is it's possible to lose staff, but you can mitigate that by marking them as direct contacts. Basically just set your highest ranked staff as direct contacts.

I don't think we have any idea what's coming. The incoming update was only specified to have a rank 8 tranq pistol and some additional security devices (I forget what). People found the emblems for Mosquito (the first event) and Kill Count long before the events started, but those were the only two emblems of that kind and I don't think any more have been added. The other unused emblems are mostly codenames from previous games that didn't appear in MGSV. If they're going to continue with events, they might start doing standard created emblems, and award the relevant emblem parts to players that complete the event. I don't know. I've generally felt like the FOB events were more of an extended tutorial to prepare people for live FOB invasions, getting more people into the nuke economy that unlocks that other ending. I don't know that I actually expect them to continue.

Also, I've done everything for both FOB events and haven't been invaded in over a month. There just aren't many people bothering with FOBs, especially the kinds of high level nightmare gauntlets that anyone that's spent a decent amount of time with the game has.

Yeah it's entirely possible that the timing of the invasion was a coincidence. Only mentioned it in case someone was on the fence about doing these events. But yeah for the most part I figured most of the people actually doing the PvP FOB invasions were steering clear of the 4/4 FOBs. I've done some practice invasions of my own FOB and it doesn't seem fun. But then I'm also playing it like I play single player. Might be different if you go in with the idea of killing every guard you encounter.

FOB Events are developer controlled FOBS. They do not involve another player, at all.
You do not need to wonder or doubt, it was explicitly outlined in the patch notes when they first came out.
They have no retaliation at all and big bonuses for completing them, but the bonuses are one time only.

They're NPC FOBS. Go nuts, for free.

    Some thoughts on the game.
So I loved it. One of the games I've enjoyed playing the most in years. Loved it enough to come here and read through the previous 46 pages, usually nodding most of the time.

That said, I don't think the story is very good. For me it doesn't hold a candle to the stories presented in MGS1 or MGS3. It's not just how rushed and disjointed much of Chapter 2 is either. While I didn't dislike the overall story presented in Chapter 1, I wasn't particularly captivated by it either. Skull Face was the villain and I figured he probably had to die at some point but I wasn't in any rush to get there. I was more than happy with the small stories presented in each individual mission, which usually boiled down to "here's a job only you can do, now go do it." Even though the story told isn’t nearly as good as MGS1 or MGS3, everything else is so great that it more than makes up for it. And story-wise it did have it’s moment.

Really about the only thing I’m bummed about is thinking about how much I was looking forward to additional story DLC. The game is set up is perfectly for that kind of thing with its open-world structure. Ideally we could’ve looked forward to receiving major expansions like Chapter 3, 4, and beyond. But even something far less ambitious would’ve been great. Something that would tell a small, self-contained story over say 3 to 5 missions without having to worry about some larger arc. Wouldn’t need to have been anything that would shake up the Metal Gear canon. Just small stories documenting the further adventures of Venom, Kaz, Ocelot, and the Diamond Dogs. “Hey Boss, a small government offered us a contract to go do a thing. Check it out.” Of course I had no idea about the changes Konami is undergoing until after I finished the game. So that’s a real shame. So much effort put into creating the Fox Engine, seems like it would be such a waste not to get more out of it. (I’m holding out hope that they’ll eventually sell the rights to some other studio to work on it, but even if they do, it’ll be a while I imagine.)

I agree with those who liked Quiet as a character but thought the presentation was awful/uncomfortable. I suspect that topic has been discussed to death in the lead-up to the release so no need to rehash it again here.

And I do mostly like the ending. Specifically, the scene in front of the mirror. I suspect most people saw the twist coming from the beginning. And that’s not necessarily a bad thing. It’s harder to do those kinds of twists now. People are just more aware. And it’s better to have them telegraphed than to make the clues so obscure that the reveal comes out of left field. I was a little disappointed with how the twist was explained in-story though. I thought the horn was going to play a role. As in it housing a Big Boss AI chip that interfaced with Venom’s brain to fill in those memories rather than using hypnotherapy. But in the end it’s fine, one technobabble explanation or another.

My main complaint with the ending is I think it would’ve been much better received had there been more build-up to that final reveal. A string of missions where Venom begins to experience more flashbacks that don’t reconcile with who he’s supposed to be. Perhaps a mission where a Diamond Dogs soldier is severely wounded but Venom is able to save him/her by performing emergency field surgery that goes way beyond the kind of first-aid he should be capable of. As it stands the way it played out for me was “hey, Quiet is gone forever now, oh by the way you can replay the hospital crawling mission for some additional info about who you are.”

Aside from that I really liked how that final scene is shot, especially the facial expressions. There’s a ton of information packed into a relatively short amount of time, and I really admired how much is left open to interpretation. I have some speculation on that scene and how it ties into MG1, but I’ll save that for later.

Endgame spoilers that my media-blackout experience made way more interesting:
So at the end of Chapter 1, there's a glimpse of the blonde hair that suggests Paz, and I was all "WTF HOW DID SHE SURVIVE?! Aren't fragments of bone/flesh that the doctor talked about from her?!" And then I proceeded to wonder if that scene was cut from the game or something because I never saw it.

And then, after having already gone through all the Mission missions, while exploring the Medical area of Mother Base, I find the room with Paz. Right away, it's a weird arrested development you see: she behaves like the schoolgirl persona she took on for the infiltration of MSF, but now she's a lot taller and her face looks more like the 30-year-old she should be by now in the story. And now all those memorial photos from the Wandering Soldiers I've extracted have a use!

But Venom Snake's interactions with her are.... weirdly, much more meaningful to me. Because at this point in the story, Snake knows he's a phantom Big Boss. But Paz doesn't know that! And she greets him as Snake, and he hands her photos, and she recalls Peace Walker things... and Snake not saying much of anything seems heartbreaking. What is he going to say to her? She already passes out the moment reality dares to sink in.

It also makes the mammal pod calling out to you much, much sadder.

You can actually encounter Paz much earlier in the game. As soon as you do the first "wandering Mother Base soldier" mission, you can find her on the medical platform. So Venom may or may not know he's a phantom depending on when you go, but it doesn't affect the cutscenes.

Yeah, I didn't expect there to be any difference. I just happened to stumble into it way, way later than is probably normal... but it wound up making it much more interesting for me.
