It seems the fan for my Radeon 9800 pro has given up the ghost. It's stopped working on me a few times before but I can't seem to coax it back to life today. I've cleaned the computer and made sure all the connections were there, but it's still not spinning.
It's a spring loaded clip or something of that sort that keeps it on. I've never tried taking the fan off because I probably couldn't get it back on...
Approximately how much are new cooling fans?
I'll probably buy locally because I don't have the patience to order online for such a small thing.
What would be something good to get?
I have a fair amount of space in around the GFX card so space shouldn't be a problem.
I've used a similar product in my brother's 9600 Pro when the fan died. It's humongous, but it'll definitely get the job done. A note: keep some wire strippers on hand, because sometimes (not all the time, but sometimes) the power connector on the original fan (i.e. the connector on the card) won't match the one on the replacement fan. If that happens, just cut off the connector on the broken fan, cut off the wrong connector on the replacement, put the correct connector on the replacement, seal it up with electrical tape (or solder it if you're a perfectionist), and you're good to go.
I have the previous version. The 700. They have been totally reliable. Nearly silent even on the fastest fan setting and lowered the temperature on my two SLI 6800GT's by a good 10 degrees.
I neglected to mention that I'm Canadian. I'm not sure if Newegg delivers in Canada. I'm thinking probably not.
I totally cleaned the fan with rubbing alcohol to get all the dust off and I think the fan has seized. There is a lot of resistance when I try to make it rotate. It's better now than it was, but it's still not going on it's own.
