Rugby World Cup 2015

The Rugby World Cup starts tomorrow!

That what now?

The Rugby World Cup - 2015

Rugby?

Only the best sport ever invented.

World Cup?

20 National teams coming together in England to play a series of pool matches followed by quarters, semis and the finals.

So nothing to do with Baseball?

No, although I can see with the whole world thing you might have got confused.

So back to the whole rugby thing

Imagine American football where no forward pass is allowed and when a player is tackled play continues with an immediate contest for the ball

I can't imagine that

No, it's pretty hard, here is some videographic depictions

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6mgEIVIWAOQ

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7ygKrEvRHLs

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yuPGScX6NiA

That last one with Scotland mauling the shit out of France was pretty good

I know right?

That said it looks pretty complicated

It is, there is a problem in Rugby with referees having widely different interpretations of the laws which an result in very diferent styles of games being played and frustrated fans incensed that refs are ignoring blatantly obvious penalties.

Sounds bad

It is, but it just shows how awesome rugby is that it is still the best sport in the world despite that.

So when does this all start?

England vs Fiji, 18th of September 20:00 BST. Watch out for Nakawara, he's the most unconventional lock in world rugby.

Are America Invloved?

Yes they are, first game 12:00 BST vs Samoa on the 20th of September.

Will they do any good?

No they won't.

One of the semi-finals and the final will be one NBC, looks like "Universal Sports" has the US streaming rights: https://rwc2015ppv.com/ a mere $199.99 for all the matches.

EDIT: Looks like there are some matches from the 2011 World Cup available to watch free on that site.

    Good Countries

New Zealand (Current World Cup Holders)
    Australia (Former Winner)
    South Africa (Former Winner)
    England (Former Winner)
    Wales
    Ireland
    France

New Zealand won the last World Cup but did do so whilst
    a) At home
    b) Having a ref in the final who may as well have been wearing a Black shirt he was so biased in their favour.

Pool A is going to be really interesting. I haven't seen England play recently but they can't pull another 'barely try in group stages' like last time.

I really enjoy rugby. Don't watch it much because there isn't a legal way to watch it where I live, most of the time.

Caught some random game on a hotel room tv years ago (Wasps vs Irish iirc) and was hooked right away, was difficult to figure out the rules at first but the beauty of the game is that most of the time the game simply carries on without getting bogged down with rulings or whistles, and when it does the referee is often mic'd up which is great. So it's pretty easy to enjoy even if you don't understand it all.

Don't think I know any current players though, but maybe this is a good opportunity to get reintroduced to the sport.

I for one am stoked- I'll actually be able to catch some games, since it's in England, which means late morning/early afternoon games for us East coasters (as opposed to the ungodly hours the RWC 2011 games were on, since it was in NZ)

I think I want to watch South Africa vs Japan, if only because the first Scotland game is vs Japan and I have no idea what to expect of that.

England vs Fiji should be a good one.

Strangely, I am interested more in the Rugby World Cup this time around. Perhaps because, as an Aussie, I have less access to my preferred football where I'm currently living but rugby is still reasonably popular. Sure enough, I just checked, and it's actually easier for me to watch it here than back in Aus (free to air as opposed to Murdoch's evil empire of pay TV).

And the timezone is good, too. So tomorrow I will try to judge how much of a threat to Australia are the English.

I don't know where he got the scorpions, or how he got them into my mattress.

    Alistair, what is liquid rugby?

    Leone Nakarawa is liquid rugby

    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dsTs-Kgtm40

For the American Football non-rugby aficionado his position is very roughly equivalent to an Offensive Guard or Tackle. Those are some amaing skills.

See Americans, this is the sort of jealousy we NZ fans have to deal with from the Brits and Irish constantly. They can never accept that our little country is better than them, so our 76% win record against all teams over the last hundred years was apparently built entirely on cheating, thuggery, refs, poaching (racism alert!), the haka and so on.

The reffing was fine last time around, numerous refs backed Joubert's performance (including Joel Jutge, a French referee) and he was chosen to ref that game because he was by far and away the best ref of the tournament (an honour I'm expecting Nigel Owens to get this time around). Also, I'd argue playing a home RWC adds more pressure on a team. This is England's third RWC they've hosted and they didn't win the first two. Neither France nor Australia won their home RWCs either.

Anyway, the start to the opening ceremony was suuuper cheesy but it got better as it went on. Should be interesting to see how England deals with the nerves and whether Fiji can match up well enough to set their backs alight.
Is there a legal way to catch this if you're a cable free colonial?

The suggestion I've heard is to use a VPN to access the UK's ITV Player, as they're streaming the games for free.

That we were playing France has nothing to do with it, the UK media came up with that narrative to try and discredit the result.

Of course NZers were famously restrained over their loss to France in 2007 with absolutely no untoward criticism of Wayne Barnes ( Graham Henry “briefly contemplated match-fixing as the only logical explanation’) by the coaches or questions being asked in parliament or anything over the top like that.

It was pretty ridiculous at the time but I'm not sure what that's got to do with anything. Heat of the moment reactions is one thing and it's something every country does when they're heavily invested in a result but coming up with conspiracy theories years later or using racist poaching arguments is entirely different.

Not too sure if Fiji is doing better than I expected here, or England worse than expected. Either way, not a super attractive game.

England have been bad, ruined at the breakdown and their scrum looks super weak.

Fiji lacked composure and were exhausted by the end.

England's 3rd Try was garbage, standing up after the tackle and a forward pass to boot.
