You can move around freely in battle by holding down LT as you move.
Ah! Good to know. That probably gets explained after a little more combat .
I REALLY shouldn't have tried to play when I was so tired. I know I read a few tutorials that totally fell out of my brain. I guess I can restart, I'll only lose a few minutes.
So Sword Coast Legends is out. Anyone play it? Is it good? Still a bit expensive for me since my budget is being saved for Fallout 4, but I am curious. It looks Neverwinter Nightsish. Edit: And Rebel Galaxy looks cool too, how do these things keep sneaking up on me.
I would tell you but I'm stuck with anxiety at the character creation screen. So many decisions... I just can't choose...
Step 1: Make character that seems cool, has a neat theme, and looks badass and/or pretty (as appropriate)
Step 2: Start game
Step 3: Play two hours
Step 4: Become wracked with doubts about character's appearance and build
Step 5: Play one more hour
Step 6: Give in to doubt and exit to main menu
Step 7: Goto 1
Works every time! Over and over and over again!
Special note: if a game offers extensive cosmetic options, it's entirely possible to stall for dozens of a few hours at stage 1. Do not panic! Simply clear your calendar, prepare snacks and drinks, and settle in. This is your job! Put your heart into it! Within a couple days short time, you'll have a character you can be proud of that will easily carry you all the way through to step 4!

Oh man, Dragon's Dogma is going to destroy you.
Extensive character customization...TWICE.
But what a glorious and wonderful way to be destroyed.
You'll also want to know ahead of time that your characters size/height actually affects their abilities in game! More worries to pile on
And every single piece of equipment is represented visually!
I didn't play Dragon's Dogma much when it was on PS3 but man am I excited for the PC version this Jan.
Customize all the characters (and Pawns)! Rent all the Pawns! Kill all the monsters (and Pawns)!
I'm looking forward to seeing such an amazing game get experienced by a whole new set of people who didn't have the opportunity before.
...and replaying it for the 6th time.
I played DD on the 360 but the systems were too damn obfuscating. Combine that with the lack of fast travel, unclear time limitations for certain quests, and quests taking place 3/4 of the continent away so I had to hoof it allll the way to the quest then allll the way back.

I actually enjoyed the lack of fast travel. I get why people don't, but for me it really worked well. Part of that is because the nighttime in the game is actually pretty scary and intimidating so (at first) there was always that pressure of wanting to get to places but to make it back before dark. As night came on you're thinking, "I've GOT to get back to civilization". Very atmospheric to me.
You might want to give it a try when it's out on Steam. Dark Arisen has options for fast travel early on, rather than just 1 or 2 ways to do it like the original game. You still have to manually travel at first, but you'll have access to a lot more port keys in Dark Arisen, so you can setup enough of them to fast travel to pretty close to where you want to go at all times.
EDIT - As far as the systems, I've played too much to be able to put myself in your shoes and think of what you might have found confusing, so I can't comment there. If you do end up trying it, I'll be happy to help with them! Though I'm sure there are much better sources than I.
Night was never dangerous to me. I was expecting dark horrors to crawl out but apparently that only happens in the post-game. Otherwise it was mostly me running around in the dark getting lost and occasionally having a chimera show up.
But yeah, I'll give Dark Arisen a shot on Steam and see how it goes. I'm also going to study up on Pawn inclinations and growth because it is way too easy to have it become a Guardian.

Ah yes indeed, I forgot how unclear the pawn stuff could be.
Question peeps, have you guys seen anyone use the Steam Controller for games like Mega Man or Axiom Verge? I wonder if it's an upgrade from my Xbox 360 controller for those types of games.
@lionheart_m I did Axiom Verge. I'd say a very slight downgrade for those types of games. Axiom Verge, for example, uses the right stick for weapon selection, and that's slightly fiddly with this controller. Also the smaller buttons are a slight nuisance.
Haven't been around in the forums much lately, just some occasional lurking.
My father died very unexpectedly a few weeks ago and had some traveling to do and people to see. So it's been a rough month. Kept off the radar for a while.
Work is getting crazy as well at the same time, so with that combo not a lot of game playing has been done. I did stick with some mindless One Piece Warriors mashing for a while, and also dug into Black closet a bit.
Going to try and get back into a normal groove this weekend hopefully. Finish up Life is Strange and Tales from the Borderlands.

Ugh, sorry to hear that, @akajaybay. Lost mine a few years ago, it's a rough process. It does get better even though the missing of the person is always there. But the pain subsides and you start thinking of the good memories instead of the loss. Hope you get to that point soon!

So I spend a few hours on Flamebreak yesterday. It's made by Nimbly Games, you may remember them from the awesome little competitive game, Altitude. A game about physics and airplanes that is a ton of fun. It's free now if you haven't tried it out.
So yeah, back to Flamebreak. It's another roguelike. WAIT, before you leave just listen for a second. It plays more like a moba... GODDAMNIT I said wait a second...
Ok, let's try this again. Create a turn based overworld you have to move through FTL style, darkness consuming the world behind you. Fill that with Binding of Isaac style arenas, in which you fight ARPG battles using slightly randomized sets of moba-inspired skills. You can also do other RPG and rogue-ish things like build item sets, skill up and defy/serve the gods. There are several races to play as, each has a racial skill. Humans can summon Squires, Dwarfs have a ground pound AoE stun, Faeries can teleport, Minotaurs can charge, etc. At the start of each run you'll have a choice of three races to pick from (I think nine are in the game). Each character is paired with one of three weapons; A sword, a crossbow and a blunderbuss. To round out the character they'll receive two skills at random. These are abilities like Ghost Walk, go immaterial and damage enemies with touch for a moment. Shadow Step is another, which allows you to teleport instantly to an enemy and deliver extra damage on your next attack. Or you can get skillshots like Flamewave and Concussion Wave which are pretty self explanatory. So every run is pretty different. One run you are an Elf with a sword using his natural Entangle skill to create bottlenecks and melee opportunities and then next you are a Shadow Stepping Minotaur with a blunderbuss (this is a wicked fun combo btw).
Technically speaking, the game runs great. At first I felt like the game was a little plain and could be animated better. After spending two hours with the game I decided that it's really easy on the eyes. The game is colorful without being an eyesore, all of the animations are important signals and easily read and the hand drawn sprites are really charming. The story is told through a painted scroll art style and narrated verse. The verse is actually pretty decent stuff and the art is surprisingly lively considering that it is has a very penciled and roughed in look.
All in all Flamebreak is a nice, complete little package. It takes good inspiration from the heavy hitters of the roguelike-lite genre and then pulls in some great ideas from mobas and let's you play with them in a single player environment. The best part of the moba influence is making combat very skill based, mitigating your usual RNG factors nicely. The RNG can still make things hard on you but player skill really does count for a lot in this one. Finally this really feels like a good bargain for the price. This is a lot of solid game for under ten bucks, from a development studio that lives and breathes balance and fun, skill based gameplay.
Zestiria crash was fixed for me by disabling a third party audio program. Nahamic in my case, but I figured it out from other people saying they disable Razer Something or Other.
Basically it doesn't like fancy audio it seems.
All I have for audio is the logitech software for my surround headset. If I disable that, I have no sound at all. I could switch the headset from USB to the Realtek onboard sound instead, but then I'd have to re-enable that in the device manager, probably fuss with drivers, and then switch it all back when I play something else... that's way too much effort for one game.
apparently you just need to disable the 7.1, not possible to dumb it down to stereo or 5.1 for a while??
Nope, the Logitech G430 doesn't let you dumb it down at all.
As far as "switching it all back" to play something else... might I suggest Soundswitch? Tiny, free program that lets you hotswap between audio devices really easily. It won't switch audio sources between a game already running (you still have to restart a game for that), but I use it all the time to swap from my headphones to my speakers to share a Youtube video with the girlfriend, then swap back to my headset.
Even if that might solve the Zestiria crash, I would still have to manually get up and unplug my headphones from the back-of-the-case USB port and plug them in to the onboard sound card and then back when I want to play something else with 7.1 sound, and given where my case is relative to where I am, it's just not worth the effort. If that sounds lazy, it's partly because I am lazy after long work days, but mostly because it really is an inconvenient layout that I have going on here.
I'll wait for a patch.
Have you considered... cord extensions?
I don't understand?
I have a 7.1 headset that works by plugging into a USB port.
To dumb it down to stereo, I have to unplug it from the USB port, remove the 7.1 USB adapter (a thing about 6" long) from the headset cord, and plug the cord into the regular onboard sound speaker jacks on the back of the case.
I'm not clear what extensions would do? What obvious thing is my addled brain overlooking?
Ah, I misunderstood what exactly you were pluggin in.
This makes me feel better about only being able to get the first tier. Zombies and game-I've-only-hear-of-in-passing. I think the latter is highly regarded here?
Still, with the new breeding mechanic in ARK, I'm right back in. I think it might be digital crack. So it's not like I need the extra games.

Oh hey Remember Me is in the latest humble bundle now. Time to give my annual recommendation, it's pretty awesome and you should get it! It's also beautiful (turn off the grain though).
Remember Me is a beautiful game and a positively breathtaking setting all wrapped around completely mediocre mechanics.
I strongly recommend it for the experience and depth of vision of the dystopian world the devs created, but don't go in expecting the actual gameplay to wow you at all. The most creative/interesting mechanic is a memory remix system that only sees a scant handful of uses throughout. The rest is pure standard fare that sometimes gets in its own way.
Crap. I'm going to have to break my no new games thing and pick up that full $15 Humble Bundle aren't I? What do you get with Ultra SF4? All the characters/costumes/etc?

I feel like any mediocrity in Remember Me is due to lack of polish, and not because of fundamentally mediocre ideas. When it's all working as intended you can see glimpses of greatness. I suspect if they had received just a bit more support it could have pushed it into Tomb Raider 2013 territory. Hell, I think it would have been better than that.
@Ed Gruberman came along and brightened up my afternoon sending me a key for Remember Me!
I'll get this activated once I get home. I was going to wait to post then as well, but I didn't want to forget.
I started playing the Lost in Nightmares DLC thing for Resident Evil 5. I got up to a fight with Wesker and he kept instantly killing me. I was too slow to do the QTE to dodge his instant kill attack and Jill never shot him to interrupt the attack.
So I did the sensible thing and ragequit.
And now it looks like the RE5 DLC doesn't save and all those checkpoints it told me about were just for if you die and not if you quit out.

Ultra Street Fighter IV gives you all the characters and no alternate costumes.
