What is
BATMAN: The Miniatures Game?
Batman: The miniatures game is a 32/35mm scale skirmish game set in the word of DC comics. Players construct bands from famous (or infamous!) personalities from the the Batman Comics, games and films as well as other DC heroes and Villains, then battle for control of the streets of Gotham.
So what makes BTMG so special then?
Flavour. It captures the feel of the batman universe exceptionally well through a combination of good sculpts and flavourful rules. It's a game where verticality is very important as Batman grappleguns his way from roof top to roof top fighting Ninjas, criminals creep through sewers and
it all takes place at night. Because
BATMAN. As the entire game takes place at night, LOS is restricted to 30cm, unless a character is illumited. This makes light sources very import and guns very deadly, but unreliable. If you can't see your target, you can't shoot. Sometime a 6' Bat punches you before you get to squeeze the trigger.
So what are the mechanics like?
The turn begins with randomly determining player initiative by drawing tokens out of a bag., the player who
Takes the Lead then allocates tokens to characters. They get a number of Tokens equal to the Willpower stat of the character and can allocate them to Move, Attack, Defence or Special. The number of those stats is both the number of dice that can be allocated and also functions as a target when rolling.
Batman is Attack and Defence 5. A random mook, freshly escaped from Blackgate is Attack and Defence 2. That means that Batman can allocate up to 5 dice to those stats, while the escaped prisoner can only allocat 2. This means that Batman punching the mook would roll 5 dice to attack while the poor, cowardly, superstitious criminal would only be able to roll 2 to defend himself. To make matters worse, Batman needs to roll the Prisoners Defence of '2' to hit him, while the Prisoner would need to roll Batmans Attack of '5' to block to punch!
There are a variety of special attacks, pushes and grabs as well as movement skills, like going through sewers or using the Batclaw to zip around. There are also a large variety of weapons and special rules that grant the characters a variety of exciting abilities.
Bands released so far include Batman, GCPD, Arrow, Penguin, Joker, Two-Face, The Court of Owls, Bane, The League of Shadows and more! That's not to mention all the free agents, Mercenaries like Deadshot, Deathstroke or Lobo, as well as other more neutral parties like Catwoman or Huntress.
I've got into this recently and still have no idea what I'm doing, but it has been fun so far! Dare you enter the Asylum?
