Lately I've been thinking more and more about getting a dog. I'm in a no-pet lease right now, but may have identified a place to move to next year that would be good for work-commute and for being closer to the city, and allows dogs.
It would be the first dog I'd have since I was a little kid, so I would effectively be a first-time dog owner. Thinking about a Swiss Mountain Dog. Probably not going to go for a rescue for my first dog just because of my inexperience and not wanting my lack of knowledge on good training practices to have a negative impact on an animal that's already having a troubled life. Maybe a rescue puppy so we can learn together?

You should definitely get a rescue.
Have a breed and age in mind and be patient. As for training and obedience hit up youtube university, man.
It's huge, it's cuddly (and thus I would call it Hugly, but some people interprete that as Huge and Ugly...which couldn't be further from the truth!). It's the Leonberger dog.

It's weird when you notice this gif has no sound, because I swear I hear Disney music watching it!
