Ok, well, with the Steam release and all, I caved and reinstalled. I still hate the imbalance and I don't really ever expect it to change, but I'm stomping again.
I fitted out my ol' 4X during the last CW event before Tukayyid and found that in the less cornery/hill peeky nature of CW engagements it performs quite well if I don't take the front line until I'm getting low on ammunition. Glad I hung on to it as long as I did now.

and since clans can pierce armor on the first alpha no matter how frontloaded, all I'm doing is carrying a big heavy lump of lead into battle that does precisely dick for me.

Yeah as someone who just started playing again, all I've really needed to go into Tier 4 is find my nearest assault mech, make him my buddy, hang out with him and engage whoever he is engaging. Pretty quick that snowballs into numerical superiority and that's the match.

make sure you secure your shit, public wifi isn't exactly a safe thing to be logging into things from.
Fortunately, I had two lances of Atlases to hide behind. My Marauder 5D ran out of ammo just before they crit out my LRM15's. My 3R 3 AC5 buzzsaw then marched straight to their spawn.
I also had one of the best CW games in a long while against GCGB
They started with a Cheetah rush, followed up with Small Pulse Laser Gargoyles. The Cheetah rush was not terribly effective, but the Gargoyles were pretty rough. Honestly, I think their 2 of their own cost them the game. The two birdies were running EBJ's.
So, the Grasshopper is pretty fun once you get it elited. I'm running 3x LPL + 5 MLAS on the version with the range/duration quirks. I can poke about as well as the LPL Thunderbolt, and also deathstar nerds for 58 pinpoint with a pretty short beam duration at ~340 meters.
I think this might be the strongest IS heavy right now, or at least one of the top contenders. They seem awfully rare in the queue, though.

I don't know, seems a perfectly normal match of MWO in my experience.
The 2-2-2-6 of the enemy team (L/M/H/A) vs. the 4-2-6-0 on my team was a bit much for me to deal with.

That's mostly due to that premade Steam team taking all trial light sniper mechs.
