The only real strat in CW is "ball up at choke point and push together"; the main virtue of org groups is just that everyone actually does it.
Just lost a match where our initial drop got wiped and they killed the base before we could manage to get back. Sheesh.
You pugging it or running with the FRR teamspeak? Cause it makes a WORLD of difference. If you're just playing casually, quickplay is definitely the way to go.
So, I tried the game, I did the tutorial, and some fights. A bunch of assists, but no kills. I was trying the free mechs, but I couldnt make change any of the weapons from the free ones, so I was thinking of buying some basic mech, something cheap and flexible, any recomendations for something that I can use ballistic weapons with ?
@FANTOMAS
Ebon jaguar or timber wolf . It's within the cadet bonus+tutorial budget.
If you decide to swap to using Lrms or lasers, you can reconfigure them to do that for far less than it costs to purchase a new mech.
So I've got about 3 games left I think before my cadet bonus is over.
So far the best success I've found is on the current trial Thunderbolt with the 3 large pulse lasers, last game with it I just got 4 kills, 7 assists, over 1k damage. Once I'm done with the cadet stuff I should have about 20 mil in the bank.
So, given that I enjoy that archetype what do you guys think I should get?

If you're having fun with Thunderbolts and lasers, I'd look at either picking up Thunderbolts or Grasshoppers. They're both the premier IS laser boats and you can't really go wrong with either. Dunno what specific variants, tho.

Well, money keeps piling up, I think Im at like 16mill right now, still with the cadet bonus, and I got my first kill, with an Arctic Cheeta, that I have used the most so far. I loved the king crab, but I felt that AC5s might not pack enough punch, but I saw a variant with one AC20 on each arm?

Pugging it. I wasn't even aware there was a FRR teamspeak.
I feel bad about taking apart these low Tier guys it places me with in Quick Play but it balances out all the matches I've been getting with 2-4 DCs on my team right at the start, so!

There are 3 conventional builds for king crabs. They are all basically the same in everything but weapons. std 300 engine, endo frame, and DHS.
The Dakka Crab, which is 4 Ultra Autocannon 5's
The Boom Crab, which is dual AC20s, and whatever backup energy weapon you prefer.
The Sniper Crab, which is Dual Gauss Rifles, and usually a PPC/ERPPC.
There are also..unconventional crabs, Like my personal MEGA CRAB.

Without premium time, on a particularly good match, I can reliably count on 250k per match. Average matches will net me around 150k. Most matches, though, will be between 45k and 90k.

I gotta say, I'm liking how the colors fade in the resistance camo. Just finished kitting out my Crabs, probably gonna start mastering them and the Black Knights at the same time (turns out you can drop with 2 Black Knights and 2 Crabs with the 250 ton limit in CW).
So I've got about 3 games left I think before my cadet bonus is over.

Adding to this: I think the Grasshopper is the stronger 'mech (slightly), but the Thunderbolt has more variety between variants. Since you'll need three different variants to unlock 'elite' efficiencies, you should plan to pick up three versions of any chassis. The 'elite' efficiencies are not optional, especially on an energy boat, because getting all of them doubles the effect of your 'basic' efficiencies. The extra 7.5% cooling makes a bigger difference than you'd think in any borderline build, and you also get a substantial boost to speed and maneuverability.
If you're down with spamming lasers, there are medium 'mechs to consider as well (mostly these will be short-range medium laser boats) and clan 'mechs, almost any of which can do the same midrange laser boating gimmick.
But if you like the Thunderbolt and don't have a particular attachment to another chassis, I'd go with that. You want the large pulse laser one, the medium pulse laser one, and then your choice of the large laser or PPC-bonused variants. If you go with the Grasshopper instead, you'll want the 5P, the 5N, and one of the other two (the other two are not great).
So, I tried the game, I did the tutorial, and some fights. A bunch of assists, but no kills. Well, I see the problem of Assaults leading the push who take 5% damage and suddenly want to stop advancing is still alive and well.
Well, I see the problem of Assaults leading the push who take 5% damage and suddenly want to stop advancing is still alive and well.
Generally speaking, assaults shouldn't be leading the push. You want heavies in front to draw fire away from your big fat slow assaults or they'll go down too quickly to be of any use. Plus heavies can actually twist to spread damage. Most assaults can't. Having the assaults bring up the rear has given the best results that I've seen.

There is still time to save yourself, I'll distract him with talk about how awesome the Marauder is.
Oh yeah, I picked up a Marauder in the end... its a... ehmm, a very special version, really "compact", people joke about how much it looks like an arctic cheeta. Im really enjoying that thing, you know, with the marauders... mostly marauding, definitely not running and jumping with an ERPPC.

I don't actually care who's leading the push but whoever it is cannot just stop 10 feet in and bottle us. IME it's just that Assaults seem to display that timidity more than most for whatever reason, at least Heavies are willing to go in and die.
Oh man. I learned so much this past weekend from...*ahem* MWO experts. Apparently ERPPCs have a minimum range of 90m and will do no damage under that (and that I was a "nub" for thinking (and voicing) that only regular PPCs have the 90m minimum)...and, even more, that I was a "total nub" for saying that I can't target ECM covered mechs and that I "just need to press R".
Oh Steampeeps...never change. But, please, PLEASE be on the other team.

IS LRMs totally do damage under 180m, too. Its totally not a waste to fire your 5xLRM15 launchers at a target 30m away and overheat yourself.

The number of times I have a Clan mech at 179m is so damn stupid. Shit shit shit you asshole, quit moving forward and use your obscene laser range. I got stuck trying to kill a Timberwolf's RT with 2 Medium Pulse Lasers and finally his own team killed him trying to LRM me. Then the 6 LRM5 Catapult A1 guy who spent the whole game in the back line spitting missiles into walls started shit talking me about not being aggressive enough. I fucking reported that guy SO HARD.
This is yet another reason IS LRM's are so much worse than Clans. I mean, you'd think weighing twice as much would be enough, but noooooooo.
TMYK: Public queue is dangerous for your mental health.
one of the best things I ever did in MWO was kill an enemy atlas with his own team's LRMs; I was hugging him pretty much out of weapons, and two of his teammates were like OH WAT SOLID TARGET
I died a little bit after he did but it was still pretty funny
hold your head high soldier, it ain't over yet
that's why we call it the struggle, you're supposed to sweat

Whats even better than that is getting an enemy streakboat to kill one of his teammates.
If I was PGI, I'd increase IS LRM ammo to 240 a ton, introduce a module that can lower minimum range to 90m and increase damage per missile to 1.1 or 1.2. I also feel like the LRM10 and 20 need a higher rate of fire to make up for the extra weight they take over the 5 and 15. Especially with the extra spread, there's almost no reason to ever take an LRM 20.
and add LFE's and IS CASE II while you're at it :P

Well they aren't out yet for cbills but if you are still playing in a few months and still want a heavy with lots of energy HPs I would recommend the black knight ! I do this because I love the mech and also because everyone else hates it and wont recommend it . As you will see Padre and armchair will be along to tell me to shut up soon enough.
The bigger launchers become more valuable when you get Artemis
Kind of, except two LRM5+A are the same weight, fire 20% faster, the same heat and use only one more slot than an LRM10+A. An LRM15+A is two less slots and three tons lighter than an LRM20+A and fires 14% faster with a tighter spread. Two LRM10's are the same space and only 1 ton heavier with 27% faster cooldown and tighter spread for 2 extra heat.
I really feel like the only thing the LRM20 does well is waste 5 missiles. You only get 9 shots from a ton of ammo. Sure, if you are low on hardpoints it might be the only option, but you'll probably have trouble fitting more than one in the first place.
