And... beyond? Like, does anyone actually hit that 64gb card limit? I'm still glad I went with 64 when I got my N3DS, as I knew it would be a mostly digital library for me, but in my heart of hearts I consider it overkill. I mean, the Vita has games that are regularly 2-3gb in size, and I suppose I don't REALLY know the average 3DS game size since they don't use the common verbiage, but certainly comparing NDS to PSP sizes I'm almost positive the ratio is the same for this generation.

I did, so I ended up upgrading to 128 GB when I got my New 3DS XL.

The 3DS is now prompting me to download Nintendo Badge Arcade, and has 'pre-installed' it as a gift icon on my homescreen. This implies to me that it is also doing this to all 3DS owners, including children whose parents may prefer they do not download Badge Arcade.
Not the first time Nintendo has done this- Stretchmo (Free to Play Pushmo) did it as well, I feel like Pokemon Shuffle did, too, maybe Steel Diver Sub Wars / Rusty's Real Deal Baseball? None of these games are blatant crash grabs to the degree that Badge Arcade is, but pushing software straight to the device isn't exactly new for Nintendo- especially when you consider it comes packaged with stuff like Mii Plaza (which also has some downloadable content, now). You still don't have to like it, though.
In general I think it's pretty neat, but the part where Badge Arcade brushes up against more traditional free to play skeeviness makes it off putting. And I don't even think the Badge Arcade is the worst thing in the world, or at least it seems to be as forthright about what its doing as it could possibly be.
I imagine there's a way to prevent those sorts of installs within parental settings, if not general system settings. And the parental paywall is still there regardless, so things can realistically only go so far if that side of things is properly set up.
I didn't like it when they did it for other games, but the Badge Arcade in particular ruffles my feathers due to the one-two punch of money-grabbing gambling style play and particular appeal to children. Badge Arcade is, in my opinion, more insidious than Mii Plaza because the for-fee items are more up front. Badge Arcade has a cartoon rabbit explaining right away that they want real money for their shit. Mii Plaza has a bunch of games that you can play for free and only prompts you to buy stuff after a few layers of menus.
Kids in particular are vulnerable to the gambling-style games represented by Badge Arcade (and Candy Crush) type games which have microtransactions kick in after a few (usually failed attempts) at prizes.
It's one thing to get some cash from adults for microtransactions. Adults know what they're getting into. Marketing directly towards kids who don't have a very well developed sense of self-control and designing a game which preys upon that lack of self-control is scum of the highest order, to me.
They don't download the game to your console as far as I know, they just put icons up that prompt you to download the game (I wouldn't know for sure since for every game that's done it I downloaded it beforehand). I'm also pretty sure there's a setting or two in the eShop that lets you block those from happening and I'm nearly 100% sure that it's restricted by parental controls (for however few parents actually know about them).
i have all the protections turned on my kids 3ds and they still got the gift and then wanted to download it by going to the eshop. yes, i have to put my PIN in to make that happen, but i would have been happier if it didn't show up. Pay to Play should never show up on my kids gaming machines. The worse part is i probably hit the wrong button but i couldn't delete it off the machine until i had downloaded it fully and then went into data management.

The prompts I got were along the lines of "Do you want to open the eShop to download the game? Y/N" -> [No] -> "Do you want to delete this icon? Y/N" -> [Yes].
Yeah, it's just one of the prompt games. You can turn that setting off (and should if you have kids probably). Having tried Badge Arcade myself, it has a lot of personality and cuteness to it... which kind of makes it worse. At that point, it's a slick guy at the carnival getting kids to spend all their parents' money with jokes and compliments.
And if you delete the icon it reminds you you can turn off automatic software downloads in system settings.
This should be the default setting.
I disagree. Most people never look into settings and would miss out on upcoming games and promotions. Any parent worth their salt will have enabled parental settings during the initial set-up, regardless of whether the system is new or used. Even after that, there are multiple gates and checks before you get to spend money on the eShop. Sure, the Bunny is cute but does make it very clear that real money is going to get spent.
Maybe I'm being biased, but Nintendo does make it intentionally hard to buy product online. It's frustrating for us regular gamers for sure, but better for parents.

This reminded me of all the times I tapped "No" when trying to finalize a purchase on the eShop because I sped though the other prompts and the final one has the positions of the "comfirm" and the "cancel everything" buttons switched.
Man, I am just having a real hard time getting excited for Paper Jam. I'm going to need to see that it's not another Sticker Star before I'm on board.
It's from the Mario and Luigi developers, so it'll be like Dream Team more than anything.
To be perfectly honest, I hated the hell out of Dream Team. I couldn't get into it at all I heard it gets better once you get further in, but MY GOD the endless unskippable tutorials at the start just beat me down. This is from someone who loved Superstar Saga and Bowser's Inside Story (never did beat that, but I enjoyed what I played a lot), and didn't even mind Brothers in Time as much as some.
Again, kids can't just spend lots of money on Nintendo Badge Arcade.
You have to have a balance on the eshop, or redeem a card or use a credit card. It's not like an iPhone where you can buy stuff and it just appears on your monthly bill.

I know most of the back and forth about Badge Arcade has been "won't someone think of the children", but honestly, I don't give a shit. If a kid managed to waste a lot of money in there, that's really on the parent. I just think it's scummy because these kinda games make most of their money off of "whales", who basically have addictive compulsions (the kind of people who get hooked on online slots or other mobile money-sinks). And while I don't think we need to coddle and protect adults who have these problems, we shouldn't be designing business models targeted at exploiting them either.

They need to stop putting 8-bit stuff on badge arcade so I can protect my wallet :P Like, Pushmo, Animal Crossing, etc. Go for it. Flood the thing with shitty badges I don't care about so I don't feel compelled to spend :P
God help me when they finally get back to the 8-bit Zelda badges... I can't believe they still have Mario sprites left to do :P
I am a sucker for sprites and like, good line art though (like the Mario Kart ones, or the Mario circle ones they have been doing - something with bold, solid colors rather than looking like a 3D render or otherwise busy drawing)
I randomly bought Etrian Odyssey Untold 2 this weekend when I was stranded with only one game in my 3ds which I didn't feel like playing.
I played EOU1 when it came out and it rapidly because one of my all time favorite games on the system, but I figured 2 was just going to be more of the same with a new story. And while it IS, they've made enough nice quality of life changes that I'm not feeling fatigued by it at all. So far mostly small changes, but all very welcome. I especially like the map icons showing if harvesting nodes can be used again.
It feels like it is slightly more difficult than the first one, but I'm digging that.
In order for a child to rack up a bill in Badge Arcade, 2 things need to have happened. Well one is really the entire catalyst, but we'll get to that in a sec:
1: Have turned off or never activated any of the parental controls, one of which straight up restricts eshop purchasing and asks for a pin number to unlock. But let's say for the sake of argument that you had absolutely no idea such options existed.
2: Have saved your credit card information to the 3DS. This is the biggie. This isn't the default option, you have to set this up. In fact, now that I think about it doesn't it require you to use a password to set this up? Even if it didn't, it means there was nothing stopping your kid from just going into the eshop proper and going on a spending spree. That's less on Badge Arcade and Nintendo's business, and more on you almost literally leaving your credit card on the table for your kid to go hog wild on.
I've never saved my cc info on my system so I don't know the details (I find the act of punching it all in a perfect final barrier of "Do I really want this?"). But I remember it always asks me if I want to save it via a password. So I'm assuming future purchases you just put in that password, right? That means borderline worst case scenario for a child to rack up an unexpected bill is to either have gotten hold of your password, or in lieu of having your info saved, just completely swiped your credit card wholesale.
Both of those actions are entirely on the parent's head.

Wish this was cheaper. I'd like to replace the copy I lost but refuse to pay more than $10
I know about just moving all the files from the old card to the new card, but do I have to format the new card in some way?
