For the record, I am pretty sure parental controls are on by default. I know because when my 3DS was getting reset constantly due to power issues they would get turned back on and lock me out of doing certain things until I went and disabled them (forget exactly what - may not have actually been purchases but was certainly things like going online in games)
The biggest thing that would cause problems (because it has been causing me problems due to my bad willpower ) is if you have pre-paid cash (i.e. like an eShop card) loaded onto the system. Which I usually do to save myself time and/or because I grab the eShop cards when they go on sale (it's free money!). So that stupid little pay thing just gives you a "do you want to buy this" button and you click it and you're done. That's the most dangerous part :P 100% preventable tho.
In order for a child to rack up a bill in Badge Arcade, 2 things need to have happened. Well one is really the entire catalyst, but we'll get to that in a sec:
1: Have turned off or never activated any of the parental controls, one of which straight up restricts eshop purchasing and asks for a pin number to unlock. But let's say for the sake of argument that you had absolutely no idea such options existed.
2: Have saved your credit card information to the 3DS. This is the biggie. This isn't the default option, you have to set this up. In fact, now that I think about it doesn't it require you to use a password to set this up? Even if it didn't, it means there was nothing stopping your kid from just going into the eshop proper and going on a spending spree. That's less on Badge Arcade and Nintendo's business, and more on you almost literally leaving your credit card on the table for your kid to go hog wild on.
I've never saved my cc info on my system so I don't know the details (I find the act of punching it all in a perfect final barrier of "Do I really want this?"). But I remember it always asks me if I want to save it via a password. So I'm assuming future purchases you just put in that password, right? That means borderline worst case scenario for a child to rack up an unexpected bill is to either have gotten hold of your password, or in lieu of having your info saved, just completely swiped your credit card wholesale.
Both of those actions are entirely on the parent's head.
No, you don't have to have a credit card entered for a kid to spend their cash on this. If the parent had money in the Nintendo Wallet already for example, or if the child had a giftcard and had the amount added to their account already.
That's really what this seems geared more toward capturing, in fact-- money that's already on the Nintendo account.
Y'all can tell me until you're blue in the face that parents should be more savvy or really it's the consumer's fault for falling for these types of cash-grabbing tactics, but ultimately I think it's the company deploying those tactics that deserves any scorn. And it's not just children I'm concerned about you know-- I don't like the way they're advertising even if it was only geared toward adults.
I'm well aware of the 3DS's security settings and the way the e-shop functions, so you can all stop detailing it. I still don't like the badge shop or the way it's implemented. There's a reason I've had a particular issue with the badge shop and the prompts enticing people to try it, and not with other games and demos Nintendo has pushed. The badge shop's combination of gambling mechanics and micro transactions is an awful cocktail in my book.
Enjoy the shop, really! If you like it, more power to you. Don't let my distaste for the business practices being showcased here sour your experience.
Wanna talk about Paper Jam? It looks pretty okay, although reviews make it sound as though it's falling into a few of the same pitfalls that recent (non 3D World) Mario installments have regarding rather bland overworld design.
I loved Dream Team to death, but the one big flaw in it was the Bros attacks mostly requiring unreliable gyro controls. Have they learned their lesson and used buttons as god intended?

So this is sounding a lot like what I was afraid it would be It seems like the writing might be better than Sticker Star at least, but the game overall sounds very bleh.
Also I'll be honest, I can't stand Dream Team's art style. I miss the beautiful sprites of the previous Mario & Luigi games. This reminds me of a DKC pre-rendered thing which looks tacky to me (I don't think it actually is, but it really *looks* that way).
SteamWorld Heist Release Date
SteamWorld Heist launches on Nintendo 3DS in the Americas, Europe, Australia and New Zealand on December 10 at 14:00 UTC. We strongly suspect the game will rock your socks off. (Fortunately, we’ve been told that new socks are in abundant supply where you live.) The Japanese version will come later, as will all other platforms.
Pricing
The regular price point will be $19.99 / €19.99 / £14.99. Yeah, we know it’s cheap for this much game, but that’s a whole other discussion. Let the simple comparison below suffice (it’s objective too, since math never lies):
SteamWorld Dig costs $9.99.
SteamWorld Heist is at least 10 times bigger and better than Dig.
Ergo: you’re getting a minimum of 5 times the value.
And the game takes at least 20 to 25 hours to finish!
We’re throwing in a launch discount as a Holiday gift to the Nintendo 3DS community. From launch until December 31, the price will be $16.99 / €16.99 / £11.99. Note that we don’t expect to discount the game for a very long while after that.
Exclusive 3DS Home Menu Theme
From launch until December 31, we’re also giving away an exclusive Nintendo 3DS Home Menu theme with every purchase of SteamWorld Heist. After that, the theme will never be available again. Like, never. Ever.

Finally fired up Badge Arcade. The badges I snag during the intro thing are three blocks and a coin -- totally miss the Mario, Goomba, mushroom and star. And now I'm totally uninterested in the stuff currently offered.
Bleh. Maybe the Mario stuff will come back? I hope?

They rotate really quickly, I'm seeing repeats of theme after less than 2 weeks

I can't tell if I want to get Steamworld Heist or not... Like, it looks fun and I enjoyed Dig, but I have nooooo time to play it. So $17 is even a steep price for something I won't get to for awhile. I also feel like Dig goes on sale all the time so this probably will too eventually...
I've played through Steamworld Dig at least three times on three devices. I'm a little worried that the new game will be overly stretched out, especially considering Dig felt like they perfectly hit the sweet spot for not wearing out mechanics and world building (a feat most games don't even dream of), but I'm pretty hyped for Heist all the same.

So, did the Monster Hunter spin off do ok for it's first month?
The answer is yes. :P

And it greatly boosted 3DS numbers:

Meanwhile in Europe, we got Pullblox badges yesterday and Box Boy badges today. It's cool that they're pushing smaller games, but I'd really like to see some Pogeymans.
I want to get a 2DS for my girlfriend. Its going to be her birthday soon and later on we are gonna be on 2 long hour consecutive flights to visit her family for the holidays. She likes Mario platformers , Sonic, Luigi, Yoshi, Kirby, and Pokemon. Buying gifts for my girlfriend is tough.... I can't keep surprises from her very easily.
I'm not sure if "spin-off" is the right term for Monster Hunter X
It's very much the next hit game in the Monster Hunter series
Is it being brought over to the US/Europe?
Nothing announced yet as far as I know
But apparently the last 3ds game was the best-selling one in the west so far so I'm hopeful
I like this pattern of only giving us the better release (the G versions). Less money grubbing. Plenty of time to enjoy what we have and salivate over the next one.

Well it's MHX and Monster hunter Stories I do hope come to the west
I can't imagine MHX at least not coming over. MH keeps doing better and better over here as more people learn of its glory.
I LOVE the idea of a MH RPG and really hope Stories comes over as well. So much fun stuff they could do in that game.

I remember how much I loved the first PS2 Monster Hunter and how it was just super panned by almost everyone.
Wait, so you can buy with the exact amount when you buy games from eShop, but for in-game purchases I have to add at least 100 DKK to the eShop wallet? That's kinda crappy.
Wait, so Paper Jam is out in Europe on Friday, but I have to wait until next year? How far into next year are we talking? Also, why does Nintendo hate NA... more specifically, why does Nintendo hate me?
Everyone has a price. Throw enough gold around and someone will risk disintegration.

You know why!
@Magic Pink - PS2 MH is when I fell in love with the series. I was very disappointed that I never got to do any multi in it. Pretty much every release of MH disappoints me in some technical way. No one to play multi with, on consoles I don't want, handheld only. Still love them but never my ideal setup.
Please give me my next gen console or PC MH!

I tricked the system. You can go to buy a game on the eShop, add the exact amount and then cancel out of buying the game.

Oh. Well that's not too bad. That's my mom's birthday though... Me being happy because I'm playing Paper Jam counts as a gift, right?

Not sure what to think on Pokemon Picross yet. The actual gameplay is pretty decent, I like that the pokemon give you powers. And I've always liked how Nintendo picross games color in the picture when you're done; color picross is a pretty good step up in challenge for this type of puzzle.
But the energy system is hard to tell if it's tuned right. I am pretty good at nanograms so I blew threw the puzzles very quickly, and the recharge time is pretty high in my opinion; currently at 60 energy with max 300 and recharge time is 4 hours. But for people newer to this puzzle style it might be 'fairer' for lack of a better word, and maybe with the Pokemon aspect it's being aimed at a younger audience or something. I definitely do NOT like having to replay boards to complete missions, I don't like doing the same puzzle twice plus you have to reuse energy for a completed puzzle. And something seems a bit off on how it tracks missions; I finished area 2 with 2 missing missions but the tooltip shows there's 6 missing and 1 missing mural piece. I suppose it's possible a new location opens up upon area completion.
It looks like it would cost 28.97 to 'unlock' the game; the shop states you need 5000 purchased (not earned ingame) picrites (game currency) to obtain free picrites. Oddly enough there isn't an option to purchase 5000, there's a 4000 purchase for 24.99, and one time deals for 200 & 800 at .99 and 3.99 respectively. However, it doesn't spell out just what 'you will be able to obtain free picrites' really means so am super leery of putting money into it, and it's certainly not worth 30 dollars to me to play it.
I am pretty stoked about Pokemon Picross. I have always heard great things but never had a chance to try it out, and now I can just download it and give it a whirl. Plus, a Pokemon theme never hurt, for me.
