I usually call my DS stuff "GameBoy" but my family has started to kind of figure out that they aren't the same thing and now it's just become an even more confusing thing for everyone involved, and they scrunch their face up and say, "wait, I thought that was a DS", or something along those lines. Basically, I can never, ever win.
Gameboy was such a better name than DS. I still call my DS a Gameboy. At least it wasn't so long ago that people give me weird looks for it yet.
The problem with it is that it's not an inclusive name. I mean, one of the first things a girl from the React channel said when she was handed a Game Boy to try out was "why not call it a Game Girl?"
It's kind of why I wish feminism had a more inclusive name as well (at first I thought it was the opposite of chauvinism), but there's nothing that can be done about it.
That might be one of the reasons why they chose to stray from the Game Boy brand. It's common for girls nowadays to be seen playing games on a DS, but I don't remember EVER seeing girls play any of the systems from the Game Boy line.
You've gotta remember, they were trying so hard to convince investors that they weren't ditching the super lucrative GameBoy brand name in favor of the DS that they seemed to have actually convinced themselves that they weren't going to ditch it. And released the GBA Micro, which might be as close to being a new GBA system as you could get without actually making a new system.
The main thing is that Nintendo was slightly worried the DS wouldn't take off. That's why it never got the Game Boy name.

It just means it's smaller and gets into places the full sized versions can't...makes sense to me.
So why isn't it called Game Kid? With either "Boy" or "Kid" it's got the little/child elements of the name, but one of them isn't a strictly male pronoun.
Though there were plenty of "Game Girl" jokes at the time, the more significant thing about it to me was that very few people I knew had it at all, since we were all kids and had to count on a parent/relative being willing to dish out the money to buy any of us one. It was definitely not a common thing to have.
On the flip side, nowadays it seems that it's common for elementary school kids to have smartphones that probably cost as much if not more at an inflation-adjusted price.

This is also apparent in the name (conceived by Shigesato Itoi), which connotes a smaller "sidekick" companion to Nintendo's consoles.
Titan Boy is the sidekick/helper for his team. Game Boy is the sidekick/helper for the Nintendo team. Boy just means sidekick or companion, the way they use it, with some connotation of being smaller.

The world was still working on its equality in the late eighties and early nineties. You could still watch the really, really racist old Looney Lunes on Nickeloden at 7:30 PM.
If the NX is supposed to be Nintendo's sole console they should go whole hog with the nostalgia factor and just call it the Nintendo Entertainment System. They already call the little NES they just started selling the 'Classic'.
Also, now that I'm actually trying to buy one it turns out 2ds's are sold out. Tried the 2 Walmart's I usually go to, no dice, and the 2 Gamestop's I tried only had used ones. (But they still wanted $80 for them, wtf). Gonna try Target later today.

NES7 would definitely work. Also, it would be amusing to rub in how many more systems they've made. 1? 4? No. 7.
OK so I own only Monster Hunter Generations on my shiny new 3DSXL. What other games should i get? I was thinking one of the Zelda games but legit no idea which. HALP

You know, all this talk about calling it the NES again, and no one's mentioned the Famicom. It would be pretty cool, to me at least, if they called the NX the Famicom just to finally have a Famicom in the US. Their core audience would know what the hell it's supposed to mean anyway, and to those outside that audience it wouldn't matter. Bonus if it's that sweet, sweet brushed bronze and maroon color scheme.

It's more likely they'd call it the Wii3PO than this.

Hey guys, I have some questions about users on the 3DS
I've gotten my gf excited to play Sun & Moon with me after exams this Christmas
She doesn't have a 3DS while I have a 3DS XL
So we have a few options:
1) She gets me a New 3DS XL for Christmas, while she inherits my old 3DS XL
2) We both buy eachother New 3DS XLs
3) I buy her a New 3DS XL for Christmas so she can play with me
The problem with option 2 is that it would be kind of a waste, since my 3DS XL works fine, and I'll probably be getting the NX when it comes out a few months later
The problem with option 3 is that I'd be spending a lot of my money on buying her a gift that's essentially for me
I also have plenty of other gift ideas lined up for her, but she's struggling a bit with coming up with ideas for me, especially since my birthday is right before Christmas
Ultimately, we'd both like to go with option 1, but I was wondering if Nintendo's restrictions against creating a new user on my 3DS would pose a problem
Could I log into my usual Nintendo account and have access to PokéBank etc on the new 3DS while she's active on the old one?
Can we trade and such if we're both logged into the same account?
Has anyone tried doing something similar and run into other problems?
I won't list all the obvious DS games people should own (Zelda, Chrono Trigger, Castlevania, Mario, Layton, etc). Instead, here's a list of the best DS games that everyone should own, but either didn't know existed or were underappreciated:
Advance Wars: Days of Ruin
Aliens: Infestation
Bangai-O Spirits
Bleach: The Blade of Fate
Clubhouse Games
Contra 4
Elite Beat Agents
Final Fantasy IV
Ghost Trick
Henry Hatsworth in the Puzzling Adventure
Hotel Dusk: Room 215
Konami Classic Series
Lock's Quest
Mega Man Zero Collection
Mega Man ZX & Advent
Meteos
Metroid Prime: Pinball
Might and Magic: Clash of Heroes
Ninja Gaiden: Dragon Sword
Puzzle Quest
Picross DS
Picross 3D
Planet Puzzle League
Retro Game Challenge
Sonic Colors
Tetris DS
Trauma Center 1 & 2
The World Ends With You
The crazy part is that isn't even a complete list. I'm sure at least another dozen or so games could be added.

With option 1 you would just do a system transfer from your current xl to the new 3DS. That puts all your stuff on the new system and wipes the old one, so you can set her profile up there.
Or have I misunderstood, and you can in fact create a new NNID on the formated source system, after having transferred everything from my account on the source system over to the target system?

Yup! System transfers are really easy and the source system is basically wiped clean and ready for a new user. The only restriction is that you can't do another system transfer within 7 days of the first...not that I imagine such a things happens that often. Definitely go with option 1.

Action, adventure, fps, driving. Not into jrpgs or strategy but if it's something highly lauded then i can make an exception.
The highly lauded strategy 3DS game is probably Fire Emblem Awakening, which I consider to be one of the best games on the system, period. Play on casual mode and enjoy shipping characters. I did have a friend who was somewhat upset that it was actually a game about tactical combat and she couldn't just pair characters with each other for amusing dialog the whole time.
The highly lauded JRPGs available on 3DS are more or less a tossup between Chrono Trigger, The World Ends With You, and Radiant Historia, all of which are DS games.
Chrono Trigger remains the best JRPG ever made. It moves at a good clip, makes great use of the time travel theme, and has fun combat. I used to dislike all RPGs; this is the game that hooked me on the genre.
TWEWY is the least recognizable as an RPG, with action-y battles that require you to control a different character on each screen at the same time. It's very stylish, and I found it pretty difficult.
Radiant Historia is just a really solid JRPG with a competent adult protagonist (a rarity). The plot is that the plot is broken, and you jump back and forth in time fixing it.
Fuck. Either my charger got knocked loose repeatedly recently or my original 3DS battery has suddenly gone kaput as it keeps dying on me after 15 mins of play. On charge now and keeping a close eye.
Was brushing up on the Ace Attorney series earlier today. There was a DLC case for that 3DS game?
A DLC case where your defendant is an actual killer whale with a moustache in a pirate hat.
You need it in your life. Trust me.
Yes, I was vaguely aware of the defendant in the DLC case, as well as the idea that it is meant to be played before the last mission of Dual Destinies? I just didn't think they would do DLC. The Ace Attorney games have generally been good about not holding cases back for pay, unless it's the phone versions or something where you pay for each case.
I should probably get around to playing Dual Destinies. I only got into the 2nd case or so before putting it down. I think I found my commute too loud to hear the music and voice acting. I devoured all the other ones that came out in America (except I didn't finish Edgeworth's game either).
Maybe all that weird Japanese court of law stuff from Apollo Justice threw me off.
edit: I'll probably pick up the DLC one of these days when I'm further into Dual Destinies. I'm not sure how 3DS funbux work
