I recently rewatched my way through one of my favorite 80s kids shows ever and unlike so many things from back then I still kind of love it.

The show is like a wishlist of things I thought were THE COOLEST in 1987.
- Terminator future
- with GI Joe heroes
- who say a secret word to transform
- into super-soldiers
- and fly JET AIRPLANES
it's fun times. It's incredibly violent. Like, seven minutes of every 22-minute episode is them shooting robots in the face and the robot's head explodes, or they punch the robot, or they grab its gun and make it shoot itself. I guess I can see why (uncool) parents had a problem with it. The robots don't kill people - they digitize them, turning them into energy and storing them in an artificial intelligence where they are mercilessly tortured in a virtual hell - apparently the parents' rights groups were fine with this. I am not making this up! This is an actual plot point of the show.
The executive story editor and head writer was J. Michael Straczinski of
Babylon 5 and
Sense8, and like those projects, this had ambitious storytelling goals for a genre show, with a worked-out plot that was meant to build to completion over 65 episodes. The heroes and villains have backstories that are gradually unveiled as the story progresses. For instance, a flashback story, Hawk dons the PowerSuit for the first time 15 years ago:

There are several ongoing plot threads, such as the nature of the mysterious hidden refuge "Eden 2," Lord Dread's apocalyptic Project New Order, and the slow revelation that Lord Dread himself isn't completely committed to his own plan and doesn't trust the AI he has built.

The end credits feature an ersatz Death Star trench run to be played with your PowerJet XT-7 toy. Everything is a TV screen, because FUTURE TECHNOLOGY.

I was completely surprised to discover that there are also cyberpunks! Complete with future cyber-slang!

I love it. I love it all! It's on DVD on Amazon and probably watchable on places online.

@Regina Fong I personally find Life Aquatic to be Anderson's least engaging movie. There's the interesting core of a story there, about a dude who has checked out from life and his family and responsibilities, but it's completely drowned out by stylistic tics. I felt basically nothing through the entire film except for a very brief moment at the end, and I don't think that was the intention.
In his later films I think he hasn't abandoned his style - people who hate that 70s vibe and Elliot Smith soundtracks and stuff are still gon get mad - but he's gotten a better grip on storytelling and not letting the style dominate the movie at the expense of everything else.
@Apothe0sis ohhh that is creepy! I like it!
Hah, the one no one cares about!
even for a joke

That's good to hear that he's refined his storytelling. I didn't dislike his whimsical style, it was just... like I said, I couldn't get into it. I should move on and watch his later stuff.

It might be the Anderson movie that goes hardest into live action cartoon territory but I am all about live action cartoons so I am ok with this

It features a bunch of David Bowie songs in Portuguese.
This makes it awesome by default.
Carol was cooler when she was a facet of Rogue's psychosis.
whoa hold the phone
Monica Rambeau (black Captain Marvel, on the left here) was great and led the Avengers for a few years
of course they depowered her and forgot about her for like a decade after that because patriarchy etc but she was, in 1985, exactly the kind of positive representation that people in 2015 wish we had more of
SHAZAM Captain Marvel was pretty rad
Before DC went Full 90's
You never go full 90's
I feel the complete opposite of this.
psssssshhhhhhhhhhhhhh

-Indiana Solo, runner of blades
Name change aside, I like the 2011 retelling of his origin
You could do with scaling back Billy's jerk-as-a-defense shtick a little tho
Other than that, it's a perfect movie script for the character
it DOES have the best soundtrack
that is true
I love Monica in Nextwave but have no experience with her in the 80s stuff and honestly don't know if I can bear to go back and look at it

--the FAQ of a 20-year old who streams Runescape on twitch
I'm completely chased away by DC's entire thing for the past six years or so
I kinda wish I finished my femelf playthrough because the Solas romance is so brutal for an rpg romance
it's the opposite of early Bioware romances
Superman wasn't the only hero to get a dumb mullet
I can't blame you on that.
