What is Kingdom Death?
Kingdom Death is a board game kickstarted in the beginning of 2013 and saw release to backers in mid September of 2015. The game is labelled as a "boutique nightmare horror". Boutique referring to the expensive and high quality nature of the many miniatures and components released with the game. It functions like a mix of a campaign horror version of the Monster Hunter series.
The core idea of the game centers around a handful of human survivors awaking into an oppressive darkness broken only by a small lantern. These basically naked individuals fight tooth and nail to survive against whatever the darkness throws at them. Assuming they survive they're given the chance to start to build a settlement to live and grow. Your survivors will attract new survivors and your settlement grows. New events fire off affecting everyone based on certain criteria.
In order to grow however your settlement needs resources. To do so you have to send people out into the dark to hunt the creatures that live there. Once you've found it you have to kill it.
Can you survive the horrors?
Gameplay
So what does that mean for actually playing the game?
There are three phases to a full game session.
1.) The Hunt
2.) The Showdown
3.) The Settlement
The game starts with 4 newly awakened survivors in a Showdown with a large and very dangerous White Lion in the Showdown Phase. This serves as the prologue before leading into the founding of your Settlement.
During the Hunt, players will encounter specific events detailing their efforts to track down their target. Some events to their benefit, others to their detriment.
During the Showdown, players will fight their targets on a square grid based map with different terrain features depending on the Hunt. Each monster has its own AI deck which controls the actions of the beast on its turn. It will target survivors according to set conditional statements and act accordingly. Players then have the ability to act using teamwork to defeat the beast. Each wound inflicted by the survivors has the ability to remove cards from the AI deck which also serves as the beast's life total. If the beast has to lose an AI card and has none available it dies. Resources are harvested and the survivors return home with their loot.
The Settlement phase handles new survivors showing up, buildings being built, new weapons and armor being crafted, and various events for better or worse transpiring.
How does this work
This is kind of a grand undertaking as there are a lot of elements to this with a lot of moving parts to keep track of. The rules allow for the addition of 1-2 additional survivors during the Showdown phase but the lethality increases substantially as written and I feel like it needs to be tweaked a bit. So for the time being I'm thinking we limit the total number of combat players to 4 at any one given time. However this doesn't necessarily mean that we can only have 4 people involved. As stated the chances of being maimed and killed are high and after the first fight you get a handful of new survivors to work with.
My current thought is that if you're interested sign up. The first 4 will get to take on the role of the first 4 survivors. Subsequent sign-ons will get to name the new batch that come after the Prologue. If your survivor dies (it's going to happen) you'll cycle to the back of the queue and continue from there. If we only have 4 people well then that makes it really simple. All decisions on events and naming will be put to vote by everyone currently involved in the game (even if your survivor keeled over and we don't have any newbies left, we'll assume you're voicing the old folks and the children's vote).
Oh yeah, SPOILERS A-GO-GO. Obviously as stuff happens in-game and information is discovered events are going to fire off. So if you own the game and want to discover this stuff with your group, or are hoping to buy it in the future and not have any sort of advance notice this thread will be bad for you. Just a heads up.

Yep, pretty much the plan.
Now let's hit a Lion Pimp with rocks. I see now that this is not the Lion Pimp but instead some sissy regular Lion. We got this.

Let's see if this mountain of cardboard and plastic I just purchased is up to snuff.
That may be the best option. I'll randomize who the four originals are. Everyone else will get their vote on settlement issues and you'll have to figure out who gets sent out for each hunt. Can't put all your eggs in one basket.
1.) We'll use forum names for survivors, but I need genders from everyone. The 4 originals are a mixed set of 2 males and 2 females. Reproduction can be a thing.
2.) Prologue is going up shortly. I'll update the OP with the current list of players.
[EDIT] BBCODE STATUS: EDITED
SURVIVOR STATUS: PROBABLY ALREADY DEAD
:winky:
"Witness me" has taken on an... entirely new meaning.
Once upon a time, there was a place of carved stone faces. A man with a lantern lay sleeping a dreamless sleep. The man knew nothing.
One day, the man woke up. He rubbed the dried ink caked over his eyes and opened them. Around him, he saw other people stirring, and beyond, a horizon of unbroken darkness.
A woman approached the man with the lantern. Her soft hand reached out to him. They had no words. They were a mystery to each other.
Suddenly, a monster emerged from darkness, its eyes wild with hunger. It attacked.
The people were no match for the monster. It tore their flesh and crushed their bones between its teeth. Some, it devoured whole.
Overcome with terror and grief, the man with the lantern collapsed to the ground. Cold stone noses pushed into his side. There was no escape.
But the man did not want to die. Desperately grasping at the cold stone faces, he felt a crack, and tore at it with all his might. A piece of stone came free. It was sharp and deadly.
The man with the lantern scrambled to his feet, his weapon clenched in his fist. He took a deep breath and roared into the darkness.
Somewhere in the place of stone faces, nameless men stood together. They have nothing but a need to survive and a lantern to light their struggle.
Basics
I'll be introducing core concepts as the game unfolds. For now the first four survivors @ObiFett, @Zombie Hero, @Auralynx, and @Kirindal are facing down a White Lion, it's features bestial yet with disturbing hints of human aspects.
Each survivor has the following stats:
Your starting equipment
Each of you is currently wearing the sparse cloth you awoke in. This provides the 1 point of Armor to your Waist. You each have a Founding Stone. If you look along the left hand side you'll see a few important things. The first icon which looks like a lightning bolt is the activation symbol. During your turn you'll have one action and one movement available to you. You can move before or after your activation but you can't split your movement. The first number (2) is the speed of the weapon. This is the number of d10's you'll roll when you make an attack. The next (7+) is the Accuracy required to hit with the weapon. In this case you need to roll a 7 or higher on the d10 in order to hit. Each d10 if you're rolling multiples can hit independently of the others. The last value (1) is the strength of the weapon and used when attempting to wound the creature. The Founding Stone also has a built in ability that lets you throw it from anywhere on the map, causing an automatic hit that causes a critical wound. Your stone is then lost forever but that ability could make or break a fight. All new survivors will start with this equipment.
Valid Starting Locations
Each of you go ahead and pick which space you want to start in. The squares highlighted in blueish are all valid starting locations. Facing of the Lion (see black arrow) is important as it will prioritize attacking generally those who are closest and in the Lion's forward facing. There are 2 Blind Spot spaces for the White Lion which are the spaces immediately behind the Lion. If you are standing in a Blind Spot you will be generally safe from attack and will receive a +1 Accuracy for attacks made against the beast.
I've created the AI Deck for the White Lion. It is a custom deck for the Prologue designed to be painful less likely to TPK (total party kill). It also introduces concepts used in the larger game.
The Lion has Movement 6 and Toughness 6.
Pick your starting locations and we'll get this slaughter started. Please don't hesitate to ask questions as we go. I'm working to get you guys proper character sheets to work with.
Build me a nice grave, guys.
They're gonna eat you instead maybe!

Are you crazy?! Jesus Christ, that lion is still out there!
Actually, should we all just start grouped up? Are there any AOE attacks?
We should not, because then if it turns we're all in front of it and nobody is behind it killing it with their rock.
There is 1 large AOE attack (an intimidating roar) but that will hit everyone who is not deaf on the board. My advice is to spread out a bit so that people can get into the blind spots, and that characters can rotate being the focus/meatshield.

The basic sequence:
Let me show you 2 different Hit Location Cards for reference.
Strange Hand
Reaction - Failure
Instinctively striking back, the White Lion's oddly human hand darts forward. Perform Basic Attack, target the attacker.
Critical Wound - Cancel Reaction. You hack off the monster's hand. Spend 1 survival to treasure this moment and gain +1 permanent strength.
Persistent Injury - Lost Hand. Affects some AI cards.
Beast's Heel
You clip the tensed muscles of the heel.
Critical Wound - Your precise attack ruins the monster's straining tendon. The White Lion is knocked down.
Persistent Injury/b] - Ruptured Tendon. When the White Lion starts its movement, roll 1d10. On a result of a 1, the White Lion is knocked down.
These are two different examples of Hit Location cards. If you inflicted 2 hits on your turn you'd be presented two cards like this. You then get to choose what order you're going to resolve them in. If you were striking with your Founding Stone normally, you would need a roll of 5 or higher in order to cause a wound (d10+1 from strength of Founding Stone). If that roll were a 10 you'd cause a critical hit. Some Hit Location cards do not have a critical result option.
You'll also notice the Reaction on the Strange Hand card. That reaction in this case is on a Failure. If you fail to wound for that hit location the Lion will strike out against you with a Basic Action (in this case a Move & Attack). A critical hit will cancel any reactions on the card. Some Hit Locations have reactions for Wounded in which case they'll strike back at you if you successfully wound them.
If you threw your Founding Stone, you'd hit automatically, pull a Hit Location card, see if there is a Critical Injury option and resolve it. For each point of damage you inflict, the top face down card of the AI deck is removed into a Wound pile. If the creature has to discard an AI card but has none available it dies.
Critical effects depend on the location hit (which is a card draw). Might be more damage, might be neutering future attacks, might be loot, might be you make it really angry with you.
Also note that once thrown it is gone so you're down to fighting with teeth and fists.
I'm gonna go out on a limb here and guess "Ha ha, that wasn't a good idea."
The auto crit from a thrown founding stone is an INCREDIBLE resource; don't waste them.
Its going to literally be my first action
Also can we keep this kind of stuff to a minimum?
This is my first time playing this and would like to learn stuff as we get to it.
If you aren't playing and/or have already played keep the comments to a minimum and try not to spoil future choices and maybe even strategies, please!
