and I love that we still have a word for that specifically
or just "bad". If somebody today says something is gild/gildt then they're saying it's nice. The word is closely related to the words for payment, validity, debt and gold. Geld from weregeld meant gold, in the figurative sense of meaning money, but also what is owed. And paid. The old norse gjalda meant payment. A rule that is in effect is the rule that "gjelder" - and figuratively it is the word we use for our equivalent expression for "that's what counts". "Valid identification" is gyldig identifikasjon. Debt is gjeld, and to reciprocate is to gjengjelde. Which, because of gjeld's many similar meanings, can be pretty accurately directly translated as payback.
