BattleTech is a wargaming and military science fiction franchise[1] launched by FASA Corporation in 1984, acquired by WizKids in 2000, and owned since 2003 by Topps.[2] The series began with FASA's debut of the board game BattleTech (originally named BattleDroids) by Jordan Weisman and L. Ross Babcock III and has since grown to include numerous expansions to the original game, several computer and video games, a collectible card game, a series of more than 100 novels, an animated television series and more.[3]
In the 31st century, humanity has spread to colonize thousands of star systems in a 500-light year radius around earth - an area known as the Inner Sphere. Even at faster-than-light speeds, travel and communication are still painfully slow, making centralized modern government impossible and forcing a return to feudalism, where leaders reposit trust and authority for their far-flung domains in blood relations. Nonetheless, the Inner Sphere was once united in peace and prosperity under the banner of the Star League, but this all-too-brief golden era was cut short with the assassination of the First Lord and the rise of five Successor States, each led by a noble house claiming to be the rightful heir to the throne of humanity.
After three centuries of total war, cultural and technological progress have not only halted, but have begun to regress. The battles of the 31st century are fought for water, for spare parts, and for the few ancient factories still capable of manufacturing and repairing the weapons of war. And chief among these weapons is the BattleMech - a 50-ton, four-story-tall walking tank armed with enough firepower to level a city.
The pilots of these machines are called MechWarriors, and they are the knights of this new feudal society. While noble families plot and scheme against one another behind the scenes, MechWarriors ride out to do battle on their behalf in the name of honor, duty, and the almighty C-Bill.
I first discovered BattleTech thanks to renting the Super Nintendo game "MechWarrior" from Movies-at-Home one idle Friday afternoon. It had a giant robot on the box so I was already two-thirds of the way to being sold right there. The game was a surprisingly deep, sophisticated (for 16-bit) simulation that put you in the shoes of a mercenary 'Mech pilot who took contracts (whose pay you could negotiate) and spent his winnings on better guns, bigger robots - or, if you sucked, on lots of expensive repairs. I was hooked.

But it wasn't until I idly watched a new cartoon on Sunday morning that I realized that the SNES game was actually part of a larger world I'd known nothing about.

The cartoon got me hooked on the world and sent me scrambling for more information about it. Thankfully, one of my friends had a nerdy dad who had the BattleTech rulebooks and models at home. He also had a really swank computer that could run the hot new PC game of 1995, Mechwarrior 2:

...which I was
pretty convinced was the best-looking PC game ever made. So when I got a good PC of my own, picking up the "Mercenaries" sequel was a no-brainer.

Some of you may not be familiar with the Clan invasion in Battletech lore. Basically, dudes left the Inner Sphere amid intractable civil war, after which they chilled and were relatively prosperous while homies back near Earth had a sustained Dark Age.
When they came back to run shit, they had superior technology and had been genetically engineering better mechwarriors, leading to IS forces getting rolled constantly. But the Clans had also developed a strict honor code, one facet of which was that a proper mechwarrior didn't use his mech to punch or kick an enemy, since really, who does that unseemly sort of thing.
This led to occasional hilarity.
It does not comply by the rules of shuffle.
But it knows what I want.
I know del Toro can make amazing movies, he should only make amazing movies.
So sad he wasn't able to do The Hobbit his way. Those would have been great.
