I cannot fully express how disappointed I am in Paper Mario: Color Trash. Nintendo apparently learned absolutely nothing from the backlash against Sticker Star. This franchise is well and truly dead.
Maybe I wasn't paying close enough attention but I don't know if we've seen enough yet.
It looks similar to Sticker Star in a lot of ways but I withhold judgement until I hear more about the mechanics.
Heck it could even play a lot like Sticker Star but be paced better with less pointless wandering and backtracking and have a really good story. That might be enough.
Well we haven't got a good one in +10 years so I'm not holding my breath.
I really liked this direct. In fact, I would say I liked this direct more than E3 last year.
Not sure if not getting English VA for TMS#FE (that acronym) is a terrible decision, or a brilliant one. Saves a huge chunk off the localization budget, and I know that I for one would probably just play with Japanese on anyway. It certainly limits the market, but a game like this has a pretty limited market to begin with.
Federation Force continues to be a game that I think looks cool. I get how people are upset that they aren't getting a "real" Metroid game but I think the Metroid series needs to branch out like this if it wants to stay afloat. The introduction was absolutely painful to watch but its obvious the guy cares about the game a lot.
Finally, I am REALLY stoked about the Mario Maker updates.
I was disappointed watching the direct, but after sitting on it i'm pretty okay with it. That Mario Maker update sounds great, glad they keep adding worthwhile content there. And I really dig the Star Fox amiibo support.
I can't say I care about the majority of the games they were talking about though. That Paper Mario trailer was the biggest surprise, and... it certainly lacked the stuff that would have made people excited or happy? It's been said, the trailer wasn't long, so we don't know much yet. Buuuut my hopes are so far down theres nowhere to go but up for that.
They've done cross-buy before, with Tipping Stars. They know it's an idea that exists
They've made VC purchases from Wii to Wii U transferable, with a small, reasonable upgrade fee
Why, then, is there no discount for SNES games on 3DS for people that own them on Wii U?
Took a potentially cool idea (I own nearly all the games they revealed) and then decide to charge full price, shooting said idea in the stomach and leaving it to die in the middle of the street
Nintendo may have an account system now, but your purchases aren't tied to it. If you buy a digital game, it's still tied to your physical machine.
Nintendo probably (rightly) sees little point in changing that for two consoles that are about to die anyway. Better to just start fresh with their new thing.
Purchases are definitely tied to your account, Nintendo simply doesn't let the user enjoy any of those benefits unlike their competitors (like bringing up your library on another console)
But when I called and had my accounts merged, all of my games were known and accounted for on their end

Honestly I suspect that including the Japanese voices expands the market more than leaving off a dub shrinks it. I just want it to be up for preorder already, I can't imagine they're going to press a ton of copies.
What other company would have their PRESIDENT dance along to a weird japanese anime dance for a niche new game? Utterly bizarre and i love it.
Also that other guy who they have doing the downloadable content stuff? I really dislike him. He shouldn't be on this presenting stuff, no charisma, incredibly awkward, doesn't know what to do with his arms, and pronounces pokemon wrong (Pock-ah-men). Just... could they have got ANYONE else?
Otherwise i quite enjoyed the direct, Hyrule Warriors Legends looks like it works surprisingly well, going to download it later.
I'm quite a bit back in to nintendo right now with mario maker and twilight princess HD. So hello again.

I'm still holding out hope they'll announce something to make it easier for me to want to get them on my 3DS. Just like you I have pretty much everything they showed on my Wii U but really don't want to rebuy everything again. I'd even pay a discount if it meant I get a benefit of owning the games on my 3DS again.

The more I think about this Direct, the more I really liked it.
* The Mario Maker Update is awesome
* Star Fox looks really great to me (And I love that Project Guard was merged with the game)
* Tokyo Mirage Sessions looks fantastic and I'm glad we get it soon
* Paper Mario in HD looks as amazing as I thought it would
* Pokken will be a blast
* SNES games on 3DS sounds great even though I won't get much use from it if I have to rebuy them again at full price
* Hyrule Warriors Legends looks great and they continue to add content
* Bravely Second, Dragon Quest VII, Monster Hunter Generations, Federation Force, Rhythm Heaven, and Kirby: Planet Robobot show that there is plenty of life left in the 3DS
* Also, Triple Deluxe was amazing fun, Planet Robobot won't be any different. (The new Kirby amiibo look really bad though)

Shibata should have replaced Iwata, honestly. Though we haven't seen Kimishima get in front of a camera yet, so maybe he could surprise.
Shibata's talents are definitely underused though.
With #FE, i think NoA/E just sort of threw up their hands and said "i have no idea what i'm supposed to do with this," which is why they went sub-only. Hard enough to translate some Japan-isms like Rhythm Heaven, but a game utterly steeped in Idol culture with a lot of J-Pop songs? Good luck. That's why they made the right decision, this game is going to target a very specific and tiny western audience who will appreciate the fact that there's no English voices getting in their way.

Shibata is the best. As for the other guy (Ed), he already hosted the indie segment in the Direct last November, he seemed a lot more awkward and nervous back then. I really didn't have any problems with him yesterday.
Also, you Brits first of all need to learn how to pronounce Mario correctly (it's not Merry-o!) before working on any other pronunciations.

Yeah it's funny how it's a win-win.
They save money by not localizing something that won't sell many units.
And the kind of people most likely to buy the game typically prefer the Japanese voices subbed anyway.
I'm reserving judgment on Paper Mario: Color Splash until we see any actual detail about it, but I understand people being hesitant.
However, I think it's time to accept it'll probably never be a RPG again. Since the last true RPG Paper Mario was released Nintendo has come out with 3 (4?) Mario and Luigi games. I think they want that to be the Mario RPG title and are trying to figure out a genre for the Paper Mario series.
I'm not sure I trust Nintendo to do accurate subtitles in a SMT game.
Personally, subtitle-wise, I'm more worried about Gunvolt 2.
Are we gonna lose 70% of the dialogue again due to the team cutting out mid-stage dialogue? Not to mention the actual translation issues on what there is.
Like, compare the standard English and "Japanese voice" modes in the Steam version of Gunvolt. Night and day, even in the parts of the dialogue shared between both scripts. And the 3DS mode never got the Japanese Voice mode to restore the mid stage dialogue.
I'm interested in Gunvolt 2, but if it turns out to be missing most of the story again, I'm just going to wait for a Steam version.
But was anyone else looking at the mentioned features and the interesting component of playing other users' defense setups and thinking "you know, we needed this sort of game five years ago"?
I don't think I've ever looked at a tower defense game and said it was needed at any point in time
I don't like pure tower defense, but I like some of the hybrids, like Ratchet & Clank FFA, the TD sections in Sunset Overdrive. I also had fun with the kiosk demo of Dungeon Defenders 2 (wish they would release a "final" version already).

I like Tower Defense, but not enough to be excited by it or anything.
Maybe that's just my bias talking, since I've been wanting some sort of "use the gamepad to build a defense of a maze and send your design over the internet" thing since I first head of the gamepad.
Just in general, this strikes me as an interesting use of the hardware that is coming out five years too late to have any impact.

?
Like all of the in battle quips and banter I just don't get to understand? They're going to subtitle all cutscenes?
The songs sure I can see leaving them.

Eh.
I completely understand wanting a unified account system to, you know, unify your purchases.
Everything about the NX is essentially clean-slating. Nuke the whole thing and start over.
Who cares
It's still shit when it doesn't happen
Would imagine so. Retroactively modifying databases and shit is a goddamned nightmare.

Feels good having Nintendo Directs again.
When the argument can be congeled down to:
"I bought a game on a system, but I want to own it on another system. Gimme it for free."
Hey, great if they're feeling generous to do so. But it's a pure luxury, and I find it hard to sympathize with those who get angry over it.
The argument is... "Hmmm, I have a Wii U, if I buy a 3DS I can play my SNES games on the go as well as on the TV!"
Nintendo should be targeting people to buy more (or some) of their hardware. Not stinging the die-hard fans who have been with them all along.
