Let's Play Final Fantasy Tactics Together - Week 13! Get hype!
"About as perfect as games come, and you must play it." -PSM Magazine
"Anyone who doesn’t think Final Fantasy Tactics: War of the Lions isn’t worth owning just doesn’t like RPGs." -Digital Entertainment News
" If you missed it the first time, don’t miss it again." -GameTrailers
Oh Christ
It's baaaaaaaaaaaack! Welcome to the community playthrough of Final Fantasy Tactics: For Grownups! We are playing us another big-ass RPG because it's what this community really craves it seems like!
OK. Fine. Big. Let's cut to the chase. Where to play?
Pretty much any Playstation platform. You can get the original to play on PS1, PS2, or PS3, you can get the original digitally on PS3, and you can get the remade version on PSP, Vita, and Playstation TV.
Wyborn, I didn't read your other thread because I ain't give a FUCK about FF12. To that end: how the Hell do you expect us to play these billion-hour strategy Jurps as adults?
Well, that's the point of us doing this as slow as we do! We try to partition out the game so you can get through it at a rate of about five hours a week (give or take), and you can always catch up whenever you feel like. We know you're busy people! We're busy people too. So let's take it easy and get through this together, without too much stress. You'll find the actual schedule further down the page.
So what do we talk about in this thread?
The idea is that as we play the game we'll talk about the parts we're playing through. Spoilers will abound, people, but the game has been out for almost a decade so we'll work out the spoiler policy as we go along. If anyone's playing for the first time, we'll be more strict about it.
When does this nonsense start?
To give people time to prepare, we're going to be kicking off this coming Friday, on the 23rd of October.
THE SCHEDULE
This is a 13-week playthrough, so everyone should have plenty of time to get along and caught up over the course of it.
Open the spoiler to see the general milestones we'll try to hit at the end of each week!
Week 1: Character Generation to Battle 5 (Dorter Trade City 1)
Week 2: Battle 6 (Sand Rat Cellar) to Battle 10 (Fort Zeakden)
Week 3: Battle 11 (Dorter Trade City 2) to Battle 14 (Zaland Fort City)
A challenge run where you are limited to specific jobs. Once you roll a job for a chapter a team member must always be that job with whatever secondary job you want on them. Monster Risk just dictates if one of your party members must be a monster, for the sadists of the audience.
Really looking forward to this! Thanks for making the thread!
I missed this game when it first came out, so it'll be cool to play through it. I've enjoyed the other Ivalice games (#MarcheWasWrong) so I have high hopes for this one!
Ah, wondered when this was going up. Unlike FF12, which I hadn't played before (and am planning to finish over December), I've beaten Tactics many times. Double digits, at least - to the point I'll probably comment on the battles and give shout outs to things you might have missed (like one of the Dorter Trade City 1 Archers not having a bow).
But Heart, I don't have FFT!
Fortunately, it's very easy to acquire a digital copy. Here are the PS Store Links:
War of the Lions is also available on the Apple and Android App Stores, as well. Keep in mind, it's $15 on the App Stores but $10 for either version on the PS Store.
I don't know if I'm actively playing yet, but I'll definitely at least be on the sidelines.

Final Fantasy Tactics?
Get the PSP version. It has a new translation.
And I quote (from a SUPER early battle):
Milleuda: How can you nobles live as you do and yet hold your heads so high? We
are not chattel! We are humans, no less than you! What flaw do you hold there
to be in us? That we were born between a different set of walls? Do you know
what it means to hunger? To sup for months on naught but broth of bean? Why
must we be made to starve that you might grow fat? You call us thieves, but it
is you who steal from us the right to live!
Argath: You, no less human than we? Ha! Now there's a beastly thought. You've
been less than we from the moment your baseborn father fell upon your mother in
whatever gutter saw you sired! You've been chattel since you came into the
world drenched in common blood!
Milleuda: By whose decree!? Who decides such foul and absurd things?
Argath: 'Tis heaven's will!
Milleuda: Heaven's will? You would pin your bigotry on the gods? No god would
fain forgive such sin, much less embrace it! All men are equal in the eyes of
the gods!
Argath: Men, yes. But the gods have no eyes for chattel.
Milleuda: You speak of devils, not gods!
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
That's the only reason I'm playing it on my PS3 right now.

I'm excited for this! Final Fantasy Tactics has been one of the games that I've most wanted to finish, but for some reason just could not bring myself to finish a playthrough. This is the third time I've started this game and by god I'm going to finish it this time! I've gone ahead and done all the week 1 content, since I learned my lesson from the ff12 playthrough that I probably will not be able to follow the schedule exactly, so I'm building up a buffer, especially since I'm going to spend some time grinding and trying to do optional content.
Also for anyone who hasn't played this before, the last fight of week 1 can be KILLER if you aren't ready for it.

Question: Are we doing the side missions? Or the recruitable characters?

If you want and feel you have time for it, go right ahead. This isn't a very strict format.

Well, I mean,
Balthier
is a total fucking badass in this game.
EDIT: And he along with most every recruitable character is exclusive to War of Lions.

only Bal and one of the FFTA protags (can't remember which one shows up) are WotL exclusive. Beowulf, Reis, Cloud and Worker 8 were always there, you just needed to make sure Mustadio's still alive and in the party in Ch. 4 (I know he's required for W8/Cloud but can't remember off-hand for Beo/Reis).

The PSP only lags when you cast very specific high level techniques.
The original loads take a long time and has a much weaker script.
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
People will play whatever version they feel like, the question of which version is "best" isn't super germane to the experience we're going to be having
We might talk about version differences as we go through the weeks, and I'm all for giving people advice if they ask about the best version to get according to the options they have
But let's be chill, friends

Wow, I totally forgot about Cloud.

That's fine by me, but the PSP has an undeniably better script to it.

Of course, but it's not like the original is Castle Shikigami 2 or anything. It had some pretty great lines too.

The only really great line I remember from the original was Delita's from the church.
And Argath goes from being kind of a prick to a total upperclass asshole with the translation changes. Just look at that bolded part up there!

This is also the game that the people who stole my PSP took out and left behind, so it and I have a bit of unique history together.

Question: Are we doing the side missions? Or the recruitable characters?
I think the conventional wisdom is: sure, if you're feeling it. I don't think there's any dedicated time set for it, but if a week's itinerary also opens up a sidequest, feel free.
In fact, if I go through with this, I'm most likely to use the PS1 version simply to use a number of difficulty-enhancing Gameshark codes to spice up the playthrough.
Did a test run last week up to Mandalia Plains to make sure everything worked and yeah, they're working. Even the intro battles get crazy. One of the foes in the intro battle had fully loaded MATH SKILL (he only got a single use of Raise and it missed to rub salt in the wound).
The list. if anyone's interested:
Hard Mode (smartens up the AI, basically)
Enemy Levels Doubled
Enemy Infinite JP (I'll explain how Enemy JP works a good bit later when the later jobs start popping up)
All Jobs Unlocked (this affects my side too, but I have to earn my JP, the enemies don't)
Rare Items Flagged as Useable by AI (this lets them use (and lets me steal) the fun stuff)
Item Levels Lowered (makes sure all the basic items (anything not tagged Rare) are available to the AI)
Rare Items Appear ASAP (Lowers the item level on rares so they can pop up earlier for the AI)
Enemies Equip Best Items according to their Level (makes sure they actually use good equipment/the fun stuff)

If you do the side missions and have the right weapons/classes then you can kill the boss in 1 turn.
Oh! And the PSP has an exclusive class I think. Two of them. One is the Dark Knight, which you get after mastering all the other classes I think, and I forget the other.

I quit playing this out of some frustration a couple weeks ago but my body is ready to get back into it and this has nothing to do with the fact that my girlfriend will be out of town all fucking weekend.
Why hasn't square revisited this specific genre? FFTA was okay but I dont think it gets to the heights of FFT. Did this game not do well?

Hm, I know I totally bailed on the FF12 playthrough, but you all went through the trouble of picking another game I already own and haven't beaten. I might have to get in on this.

Speaking about tactics games--@Wyborn just bought Tactics Ogre: Let Us Cling Together and booted it up, and let me tell you, he still remembers what his birthday converts to in the Zeteginian calendar.
And for a moment there, after the first few notes of the opening refrain, or perhaps after that, at the dissonant notes of the chapter title melody, I could see the gears in his head, all "Could I get away with stealthily editing the Let's Play Together thread to Ogre Battle? I think I could"
Okay, maybe that thought process didn't actually occur. :P But I do know that if he tripped over a billion dollars in the future, he would be at Squeenix HQ the very next day, ready to buy the rights to Ogre Battle with as many cash briefcases as necessary.

Does it control OK on a phone?
That's the only reason I'm playing it on my PS3 right now.
Man, if the choice is between playing War of the Lions on the phone or classic on a PS3 I would go with the phone every time.
The script is so much better you guys.
And playing it on a PS1 is disastrous because of the load times. Not as bad as Tactics Ogre. Which would be a bitch to 'Let's Play' it.
