If you do the side missions and have the right weapons/classes then you can kill the boss in 1 turn.
Oh! And the PSP has an exclusive class I think. Two of them. One is the Dark Knight, which you get after mastering all the other classes I think, and I forget the other.
Onion Knight! I forget what he does, but he's either super bad or super good.
This is the way!
Dark Knight requires you master Knight and Black Mage, and get Dragoon, Samurai, Ninja, and Geomancer to job level 8, and have crystallized 20 enemies.
Onion Knight requires Squire and Chemist at job level 6.

I hope to do this playthrough and you can bet I'm playing the PS1 version
Did I just totally miss the Spec Ops playthrough? This is what happens when you rely on your bookmarks too much
I'm into this! First beat it only a couple of years ago and after playing Tactics Ogre: LuCT so I wasn't as enamoured with it as most are, happy to give it a fairer shake this time.

Spoiler since I'm getting a bit of a head start.
There's a sort of dark comedy to the first mission where you can just lose without getting to do anything because a friendly NPC is an idiot is the third one in the game.

I am definitely not a fan of any of the AI friends so far.
Why hasn't square revisited this specific genre? FFTA was okay but I dont think it gets to the heights of FFT. Did this game not do well?
It went GH. It did very well. It also inspired a ton of copycats.
Square is dumb.

It's pretty much a given fact that your AI buddies will kill themselves in the first chapter, because they're a bunch of dumbasses. I had to plan around the fact that I have moving target practices for the enemy.
If I recall, most of the fights that introduce a guest have a 'save him' or 'kill them all' option, that changes the ultimate mission objective. If you don't feel like counting on dumb AI, just choose the option where you just need to beat the enemy, instead of saving the guy
I can't pick that option. I've tried and I always end up restarting to save them. It's why I haven't beaten Fire Emblem Awakening too. I can't let people die. I won't.

The AI buddies won't be gone forever - They got plot immunity. Your nameless cohorts, though!
I wonder how many people will get stumped at the end of chapter 3. That fight is brutal and was the biggest lesson I every had on the need for backup saves
There's a very good reason I gave the end of Chapter 3 its own week.
Also decided to start the crazy-town playthrough I described earlier. Though Chapter 1 isn't as crazy because of the fact most of the early game foes do not have a sub-job equipped, though they can roll Reaction(seeing Hamedo/First Strike is NOT FUN, lemme tell you)/Support/Move. I'll be taking (and posting) screens so you too can see how nuts this gets.
I already played through Dorter, and the next stage, since it'd feel really weird to just be hanging like that for a week. But I think I got into grinding too much. Story missions are a snooze-fest compared to random battles at this point.
Maybe FFTA spoiled me, but looking back...most of the classes and skills in this game really aren't all that useful or interesting. I mean...come on, archers, really? That was the best you could do?
I think I'm going to restrict myself from using some of the more overpowered skills like dual-wielding and the one that basically makes you immune to physical damage to see if it spices things up.

I would have preferred an LP of Tactics Ogre tbh, but considering that game has multiple branching paths and choices...it would be hard to get everyone on the same page!
Humor can be dissected as a frog can, but dies in the process.
Get yell on squire and autopotion from chemist. Almost all the tough battles can be beat with ease
It looked like only the named characters can get yell from squire, is that accurate? or did I miss something?
Yes but many of the hard fights imo are when Ramza is alone. Self yell and autopotion while stocking at least hi potions for those fights carried me through the game.
Also it's the 22nd for me now, who wants to talk about the beginning of this game immediately?
Move/hp is a great combo with yell. Basically yell is broken as hell cause with enough speed you can take 5 turns for the enemies one. Also a tip don't get all of the squire abilities on name characters because it will lock out your chance to get a cool ability later. If I remember correctly.

Wait, really it locks you out of Ultima? I thought that it was just a low chance to learn even if you had all the abilities?

I believe so. I didn't think it was a low chance to learn but that you had to be lucky enough to get hit by it. It might be a low chance and I got lucky thoughthough.

Archers are the worst class for sure but besides duel weird I think ninjas don't have anything going for them. Oh and speed Stat growth I guess is highest on ninja.
Hamedo isn't the best imo. For random fights maybe but not for story fights where you fight sword casters. Class name escapes me.

What Squire ability did you pass on?
I skipped antidote I think? I only level squire up to get yell and move on to other classes mostly so it was rare that I used the class.
As I recall, only Ramza can learn Ultima. He needs to be in the Squire Job, and then he needs to get hit by it and survive. Having all or none of the prior Squire abilities does not modify this. It's not considered part of the Squire Job for anybody else and will not affect Mastery for them.

that you can't steal from Marquis Elmdor. I spent a while preparing for the fight and getting the prepared for the steal only to realize he has mantainence in the new version

Wait I thought Maintenance only guarded against 'break' abilities? Did the PSP version change that?

After a couple dozen attempts I couldn't steal from him at all. The special equipment is attained from the special area later in the game.
I need to keep playing the android version. I'm so close to dark knight. Maybe I'll wait till the thread catches up.
Also further to what we were talking about before it is pretty easy to make this game easy with certain abilities but there are so many ways to break this game. It's great. Still my favorite game ever.

For the most part they get plot immunity
In the third fight though you want to choose 'screw this guy just kill them all' and all your soldiers get a Brave boost
Gonna have to grind a little more before I jump into Dorter.

Get back in there and grind that Squire shit.
Farewell, Monk, I hardly knew ye.

Me I do.
I first played this game when I was like ten years old, so Ramza essentially being a Jon Snow situation was entirely lost on me until way later.
