I mean, pyromancy can still be USED without those stats. It just does a bit less damage. I think it still mostly scales from the level your flame is at.

Pyro in DS2 is perfectly serviceable without investing in INT/FTH and just levelling up your pyro flame. It's not as powerful as it was in DS1 without stat investment, but that's kind of the point. It was too strong in DS1. But yeah, it's still perfectly workable in DS2 with only investing in attunement to get some slots.

And it still has a number of spells that don't even care about scaling. Sorcery too - though I don't think there's an equivalent to the Oolacile Ivory Catalysr this time around, you still get some nice utility spells at 14 int.

Pyromancy works fine with no int.

Basically, its ds1 level damage prior to ascended. (So +10) And then they added int scaling. Was ds1 level damage good for you? Then you are fine in ds2.

Speaking of Magic, all day at work I've been thinking that I should try out a caster. Maybe with a side of Rapier and Target Shield/Parry Dagger, and do nothing but sling spells and riposte all day.

It'd certainly be a bit of a different play style than my first run.

On the other hand, I may wipe Windows off my PC and install Linux, in which case I'd end up playing "Configure Dark Souls under Wine" instead.

My favourite DS1 build is a spell sword melee sorceror hybrid.

    Alternatively.

My favorite is and will always be Great Scythe. It's just ludicrously perfect for my fighting style of swinging away and rollin' everywhere.

I never actually got around to making a great scythe character.
Or a katana character other than the vergil build, which I got distracted away from shortly after blowing O and S into tiny golden pieces.
Maybe I will make a great scythe character some day. Probably wont get around to it.

Honestly, I doubt it would feel any different from doing a greatsword build, except that you just crank raw dex for damage. Because sexy sexy scaling.

Old Iron King was a punk. Probably could have gotten him first try if I hadn't rolled into the lava behind me.

I'm sure I'm not doing this most optimally but it seems to be working out. I am curious about where I get an item that lets me walk on the really hot rocks because there are a few items and a chest I saw in the iron keep I'd like to collect. Hopefully I come across it eventually.

I'm really looking forward to doing this over in a NG+ but with using the google.

    As to iron keep loot...
There is no equivalent to the orange ring this time around. The answer is to buff your fire resistance as high as you can get it and run, Estus, RUN FASTER. Also, don't have any souls - you're going to die a lot trying to make some of them work.

Ideally, this would be the Flash Sweat pyromancy, the highest fire resist ring you have, and then good fire resist armor (like the Alonne Knight set, for instance). Soaking yourself in water somewhere helps... briefly - there's a mask in one of the DLCs that keeps you constantly drenched actually.

Most people consider DS1 to be better story and atmosphere wise.
Gameplay wise I prefer the second in most ways.

At this point I'm fairly certain that the biggest issue with DS2 is the soul memory system. It's been discussed a fair few times at points through the thread(s), basically it's bad at what it was intended for and also a generally poor method of gauging character power.

It was that somehow, from within the derelict-horror, they had learned a way to see inside an ugly, broken thing... And take away its pain.

I have enjoyed more pvp and coop in ds2 than in ds1 simply because peer to peer matchmaking is so absymally, atrociously bad in these kinds of games its basically a joke it was even used in the first place.

So ds2 wins in multiplayer shenanigans because you can actually play it.

I think SotFS does some nice things to improve the story/atmosphere stuff. Minor things, but they add up to a world with a lot more flavour to it.

    Favourite changes:
The hollows banging their weapons against the dead giants. Such a good detail for how a hollow would behave.

The warning from Agdayne about light having consequences outside of just one room.

The guys at the dragon shrine welcoming you, at the dragon's orders I assume. Makes more sense than the big guy welcoming you, but setting every soldier on you to reach them.

I really like the new dragon shrine. It is impressive how much more interesting that area is now.

I'm a bit confused that they just let you skip the dragon aerie though.

    No see that's the thing.
    They're going easy on you.
    In a souls game.

    It's weird.

It's like if the Devil rocked up at your house and gave you a free six pack and was just like "Yo dude, just thought you might be thirsty, no catch or nothin, ciao" and left and it really didn't have a catch.

14 hours into my first experience with a souls game (SotFS since I've heard the DS1 PC port is meh). After a couple restarts, I'm really loving the game.

I gotta say, though, this game makes me paranoid as all get out. I'm constantly worried I'm making the wrong choices. Like, should I have bothered to upgrade this weapon, or should I have used an effigy when they seem to be in such short supply?
