See, I'm a bit cautious about Curses n Chaos, because I did NOT enjoy mercenary kings, Plus when you tell me the title of a game is "Curses N Chaos" I immediately think of Ghouls 'n ghosts, and then get REALLY disappointed when it's not like ghouls 'n ghosts.

Yeah I played Mercenary King's for like 16 hours and came away with the conclusion that it's actually not that good a game. As for being disappointed that it's not ghouls n ghosts, there's nothing I can really say about that since it's nothing like it.

What it IS is a simple, solid little arcade game with wave-based levels. You got a button for punching, a button for jumping, and a button for using items. There's also mario style run button that powers up your punches slightly if you punch on the ground while running.

Getting through levels really depends on how good you are at twitch based action like in something like megaman, but also on how well you can juggle the various item drops. You can only hold one at a time and they only have one use, so a lot of the times success depends on knowing when to use items and when you should save them for later. You can also press a button to have your owl friend take any item you're holding and store it for later. Pressing the button again will have him bring the item out. The owl's name is Owly.

I don't know, it's not a super big or deep game, but it's a fun and challenging arcade style deal. Watching a gameplay video on youtube will basically show you what you'll be doing the whole game, but I think it's solid and enjoyable.

EDIT: AND HOW COULD I FORGET? You can hold down to dance. Dancing gives you points. If you have your multiplier up from killing a bunch of monsters in a row without dying, your dancing gives you even MORE points. It's pretty great.

I don't care if their CS staff is in India being paid $1.50/hr, they're not getting their money's worth.

Yeah, that's what's bothering me. Is it for their protection or to punish me? What are they protecting themselves from, an additional FS15 sale? What are they punishing me for, asking for a refund before they were allowed? idgi

I know it's silly after spending over 10k on the store but I just can't keep giving then money if they keep testing friends of mine like this.

@DeMoN is right about Curses n Chaos being tough. I'm having a hard time getting past the first stage solo as well. I discovered a couple of other moves during my session. As well as the running punch, you also have a jump kick (A+X) and an uppercut (Up+X) that do double damage. The uppercut is great for dealing with frogs and ghosts and anything that attacks from above and the jump kick is great for taking out frogs and birds too.

The game demands really tight timing and keeping the combos up while juggling the gear drops and not getting hit is super demanding but pretty fun. A nice thing is that money and drops are kept whether you win a stage or not, so it's not an all or nothing proposition. You can farm up some money and items for the alchemy stuff even if you aren't a for srs pro gamer.

On the technical side the controls are sharp, the action is easy to pick up and understand and it look and sounds really good. It feels like nice, solid coop single screen brawler. I'm looking forward to playing this with my kid.

After Pixie helped me make my boob-related purchase decision during the sale the other week by dropping Sakura Fantasy into my library, I still had the five bucks in my account to buy Sakura Beach.

It wasn't very good. Well, I mean, the story was an incredibly flimsy excuse to show girls in bikinis, but that's expected. It fell down in some other areas, most of which would probably have been caught by an extra pass or two through QA.

Unlike some of the other games from Sekai Project, it actually has decisions you can make to alter the story and change who the main character winds up with at the end. This is good! It gives replay value! It's not so great when you hit the dialogue that obviously changes depending on your choice, and the dialogue refers to a choice you didn't make! This happens quite often! I love exclamation marks!
Notably, the game has four endings - wind up dating one girl, wind up dating the other girl, wind up dating both girls, or wind up forever alone. Regardless of which ending you GET, there's a line of text at the end that implies you've gotten the mega happy ending.

Also, it has some really silly damn-you-autocorrect-style word choice errors, my favorite coming when one of the characters proclaims that she "has a reputation to upload!"

I mean, there are probably worse VNs on Steam, even worse ones that are just excuses for fan service, but this wasn't great.

Well I was going to spend this evening playing spooky games with friends, but they all bailed on me.

Plan B was to stream me playing the park so anybody here could watch me become terrified.

Then I remembered that my machine crashes for some reason whenever I try to stream, so now I'm just playing The Park alone (which is probably the most spooky way to play it. I had wanted friends and strangers as a way to chicken out of playing spooky games, because I can't handle the spook).

That would be because they aren't really VN games, since most of those have actual branching stories and such and the Sakura games are straight lines that you are just reading along as an excuse to ogle the pictures.

At least, that's what I gathered from when Game Grumps was playing Sakura Spirits. There was no player interaction other than pressing the button to advance to the next bit of text.

I made it to the ferris wheel and called it quits for the night...I can't take spooks. Now to play something where I can hide behind an assault rifle or a multi-ton war machine.

I reached a section where I probably could have explored further, but I couldn't bring myself to do so.
The girl behind the window freaked me out. I could only faintly see her as the busted light fixture sparked. I couldn't tell if it was a person, an animatron, or a corpse. There was a stuffed teddy bear on a shelf in front of her. The bear may have some significance. This is the second time I've seen a bear at a spooky spot, and I think the kid raced into the park looking for a bear.

I think I could have gone inside that shack to investigate. But NOPE. NOPE NOPE NOPE.

While my train of thought isn't that simple, I too am easily swayed. A few people in this thread have unironically said that Sakura Spirit was decent, and that was enough to make it an impulse buy during a sale. The Neptunia games look like standard JRPGs with the wrapper of cute girls reenacting the Console Warz, which piques my curiosity something fierce.

Other entries are harder to explain and, I assume, are where this empty bottle of rum gets involved.
