Give it a shot and if it runs like crap you can get a refund
For some reason I hate the idea of actually using the refund policy rather than owning up to my mistakes of buying a shitty game, but this might be my best option as I meet the specs, but optimization is awful from what I've heard.

I have a 280X and i5-4690K and am running on high-ish settings and getting around 30fps.

I know exactly what you mean but, considering Valve has expressly stated demo and hardware performance testing purposes are a legitimate use of the refund policy, I think it warrants a change in philosophy. Especially if it is to determine if the game will even perform adequately.
EDIT: Be aware that, if I remember correctly, it is a very big download. So if you ever have D/L cap issues, you might want to keep that in mind. Especially if you are just planning to test the game.

It's a large install but not that big of a download. I think it was something like 8 or 9GB, but takes up something like 41GB after decompressing.
While the optimization is bad, they have been making some improvements to it. Also it can be mitigated by changing some unneeded graphics options like clouds or shadows.
The game is very playable on a decent machine, and on a 970 it's SO PRETTY.

Ahh... good to know. I remember it was pretty large on my HD but wasn't sure about the actual download size. Is there any way to actual check download sizes of games short of starting a download? That seems like it would be useful store page information.
Do the old tricks to disable grasses and other foliage still work? It's less pretty, but it provides dramatic performance boosts while still allowing things like dinos, buildings, and harvestable resources to look good.
IMO better to play dinos with no grass than play laggy or not play at all.
Killed The Giga For you guys thats was running rampant in the middle river
You can kill them?
Like, that's an option?

New patch is out:
Added Thai tanslation (launch commandline: -culture=th), and updated to latest community translations. Thank you ARK community translators, you're the best!!
Improved server and client perf by using intrinsics. Requires server update.
Fixed Fleeing behavior that would cause creatures to head towards the origin (50,50). Requires server update.
Handcuffed players can now punch (without causing damage). This allows them to drain stamina even if encumbered, hastening death by malnutrition. Requires server update.
Also a patch planned for 3/23:
Upcoming Version: v237.0, ETA: March 23
- New 'Dino': Woolly Rhino!
- New 'Dino': Eurypterid!
- New 'Dino': Dunkleosteus!
- Snow and Swamp caves
- Breeding Mechanics Phase 2
- Tribe Member Rankings with Customizable Per-Rank Privileges
- Increased Server Performance
[MORE NOTES TO COME]
So. After a massive Steam gaming break due to poopy computer hardware (I bent some pins), I have finally finished my new system build and am ready to get back into the game. Now that it runs really freakin' good. Well...whenever it wants to run. 99% of the time, my game crashes with a 'video driver crashed and reset' error message. I've looked it up and tried most fixes, but none have worked. It's just Ark doing this, which makes me very sad. The one time it launched it ran amazing. Just hasn't started since.
I presume that you've already tried updating your drivers/rolling back to older drivers.
In my experience weird crashes during demanding computer use can frequently be traced to the power supply failing to keep up with demand. On at least two occasions I've seen the hardware itself be good, but windows caused the problem by trying to cut corners with its energy saving plans. Setting the plan to high performance resolved the problems in those cases.
I a Warboyz has lost a level 80 shark named Imperia, it is happily swimming around in the water by heroths base, at 11, 51. Probably in not danger of starving, as it's on wander and aggressive, and murdering everything.
Also, claiming is back on.

I am honestly shocked the devs gave prisoners a way to do anything. They've always been on the side of the assholes that keep people from playing.
That's my favorite way to play online games, honestly. I'm just waiting for this game to get optimized to the point where I can run it well, then I'll be the one putting people in murder dungeons.

How can you get enjoyment from ruining other people fun?

Also, @MuddBudd I've got Birdasaurus. He's at my place. Come pick him up whenever.
Remind me where that is?
-edit-
We really need to make another map with current locations on it.
As for PVP, there's a trend on PVP servers not to put people in Murder Dungeons. I would be okay with Murder Dungeons.
They instead keep them locked up, drugged, and force fed. They are asleep and can't do anything, and most importantly, cannot die. Which means no respawning, not even making a new character. It effectively locks them out from the server permanently. Or at least as long as the Tribe can keep people online to manage prisoners. It keeps them from even playing. That's not cool to me.
Some of the bigger Tribes on official can manage this pretty much 24/7.

She is probably mine... i must've forgot to take her off wander... i have another shark that should be around there aswell, and anyone should feel free to claim it... also to destroy the base because i abandoned it awhile ago, just haven't found time to tear it down because the fencing is huge... and i'm lazy.
So...I've been a bit...distracted, and haven't been attending to my dinos. Anyone who would like to adopt them is welcome to. They're located adjacent to the eastern river, at the junction of three rivers, just north of a swamp.

In case anyone was curious, if you harvest a metal node with a Doed, you get a shit ton of rock. Like several times more than you would from a regular rock node. I'm guessing it converts whatever metals worth into stone?
Anyways, I didn't know this until just now. I was getting 190 stone average per swing, and I'm betting you can get more with a higher damage Doed.

Stopped by last night and grabbed your high level toad. Those things are a lot of fun to hop around on and we only had a low level one so far.
If you walk up to a pet you will see a prompt that says (hold *something* for more options). One of these options is enable wandering. If that is on, then your pet will definately need a fence to keep it from walking away from where you are sleeping, and even then it might jump the fence.
When wandering is disabled, they are good little dinos and stay where you put them.

They snap on top of the pipe. If you use an intersection, you get a little choice of where it'll face, but not a lot. Basically imagine the end of the pipe is where the center will sit.
The crawlspace under our castle looks like an insane rats nest of piping so that our cooker and our barrel will be sitting where we want them in the kitchen.
Also it's where I keep my Araneo. Because there are always spiders in the crawlspace under your house.

Steam Support is the worst. Seriously, the worst

Tell me if anything broke.

Well, let's be fair, this just means prisoners need to be narco'd and fed 24-7.
That sometimes gives errors
I assume you've tried reinstalling drivers and the game

You know what, I'll just mess with it in SP before spending resources on it on the server.
