So, whens a good time to start trying online in MH4U?
Just started playing and still pretty green.
I would recommend playing as much of the Caravan as you can before heading online for your first time. Those quests will teach you things you will need to know — especially map layouts. If you haven't been to, say, Heaven's Mount before you do it online you will probably get lost while everyone else does the work.
Online is great for grinding quests to get armor and weapon materials, though, as you can really tear through things quickly with a team.
If you stick to your comfort zone (don't go doing 3* quests if you haven't opened up the Volcano map on your own yet, for instance) there's really no wrong time.
I hate rajang. I farmed the caravan grank quest and in order to break his horns i had to farm other crap to make a great sword and a set for it, then also get a handle on playing it.
There were still so manu times i would go for a charge attack and he would just turn and id smash his arm instead of his face. Plesioth isnt even that dumb to fight against.
I hope nibelsnarf can be baited into eating the barrel bombs again, i love the fights where you can do weird things to get an advantage.
Also, Rajang sucks. I'm sorry, Japanese playerbase, but it's true.
Literally the worst part of reading the MHGen monster list for me. Even Khezu isn't that depressing.
I dunno. I'm looking at this list right now and all of the gen 2 elders are on it. How many more rounds of those await us?
The elders are iconic though!
I'd fight any of them any day of the week. They're interesting enough and generally have one mechanic that is super unique.
They were interesting the first time in 4U, and then they were key quests in every tier of the game.
All the new monsters in 4U were so cool and then they were totally overshadowed by the old ones, which were overexposed, made better equipment, or both.

That depends on your definition of "overshadowed", but I do agree that the old monsters were way too frequent.
I really like fighting Nerscylla and the Seltas Queen. Giant bug monsters are just cool! Except the Vespoid Queen, that was not fun.
Two of my favorite fights are both of the crab monsters - shogun cenataur and dimyo hermitaur. Glad atleast one of them is back in 4U though I'm not upto it yet. Are either of them in MHG?

I believe both crabs are in Gen. Shogun takes 4U off but you get both Damiyo and its purple plum cousin instead once you hit HR and GR respectively.
Daimyo may be among the monsters I'm worst at. If it's just for a kill, and not to get specific mats, I'd rather go back to the Rajang than fight the damn crab. For some reason I just can't dodge it for beans.

That sounds like a weapons preference thing. I blade dance through that thing's legs like an artist. I love fighting monsters who don't have loud roars to interrupt my combos.
A Plum Hermitaur is the only GQ I bothered grinding up to Lv140. The map made it annoying as hell and I deleted it not long after, but by gawd I (we) did it.
I don't know why, but for some reason squaring off against a huge, somewhat comically animated hermit crab is just immensely fun to me. The only part I somewhat dislike is having to run around like a nut dodging his underground attacks.
I usually use a LS to fight them, but this time around I think my lance addiction will be interesting to try.

Second-best. I believe the current champion is Aura's Yian Garuga.
I came home from work and knocked out some difficult homework, hyped to try MH4's multiplayer, only to find rooms that are empty, or become empty by my presence. I'm pretty dissapointed so far. I just took down Tetsucabra for the first time, but it seems I'm chopped liver.

Pretty sure I hopped in your room. Usually we wait for people to ready up before we launch. ;p
Unclear if those were randos with us or not, but that's pretty much how MP goes, minus me dicking around in a pumpkin guy outfit because I can.

Well we did like a few missions until I took a break. It was an utter joy, and since I Youtubed' mounting beforehand, I didn't make an ass of myself. Since I don't know how to capture, I ended up having to just sit and watch. I'm taking a break now so I can re-read capturing.

Ran into my first egg carrying mission.
I get the feeling this is going to be a recurring thing that ends in tears.
Made it 90% of the way back with a golden one while checking back and forwards constantly and I still got blinded by these lil insect bastards that showed up for the first time ever just as I was in the home stretch.
Yuuup. It's a thing. A for the most part optional thing, unless you want to go head-to-head with a Fatalis eventually.
I wish I could see it as optional but I think I have to complete every quest atleast once or its going to bug the hell out of me.
Speaking as someone who has completed every non-DLC quest at least once: you don't have to do them in order. Move on and do fun things, come back later with better equipment.
And better cooking ingredients. There are recipes that make the carry quests much easier, along with a few armor skills.

Mega Dash Juice (I think that's what it's called) helps with the egg quests. Unlimited stamina for a few minutes really helps. The 4* or 5* Caravan egg quest....haha. I can't imagine doing it without.

For my zenny, the most important thing you want for carry quests is the Feyline Lander skill. Not having to worry about breaking your object when you fall down a cliff is super helpful.

Just made a great jaggi switch axe and armor set. No chest piece unlocked though, sadly. The hunter mail has jaggi parts so I guess it counts.
Currently alternating between the insect glaive, long sword and switch axe. Not sure how feasible it is to main atleast three weapons without a ton of grinding for parts later on but I have a hard time choosing between them at the moment.
The insect glaive feels tricky but really powerful. Long sword feels elegant and simple while the switch axe is incredibly satisfying even when it slows me down.

At least other things that fly have the decency to actually have wings. None of this "Sonic Spinball" bullshit.

Lagombi is still in 4U, but I like the other bear types.
Probably my favourite monster from 3.
I feel the same about Nerscylla. Is she the only new 4U monster who didn't (and isn't Gog or a subspecies)?

That and my hands not immediately burning out from cramps. I get that from the 3DS more than probably any other handheld.
I can guess theres some endgame stuff in there but is there anything from there I should be tackling early on that might be helpful?
