Just made a great jaggi switch axe and armor set. No chest piece unlocked though, sadly. The hunter mail has jaggi parts so I guess it counts.
Currently alternating between the insect glaive, long sword and switch axe. Not sure how feasible it is to main atleast three weapons without a ton of grinding for parts later on but I have a hard time choosing between them at the moment.
The insect glaive feels tricky but really powerful. Long sword feels elegant and simple while the switch axe is incredibly satisfying even when it slows me down.
I knew major animals had armor counterparts, but, weapons?

90% of gear is made from bigmonster bits and.themed on them.

Interesting. I'm going to take a questing hiatus, grind for Malachite Ore and Gluegloppers and start filling the blanks in my Combo list so I can play online more competently.

? Nothing relevant for online uses either of those... though lots of armors do.
The main things for online play are potions (all kinds), antidotes, and powders. Bombs are big too, but you really just need Barrel Bomb L from the shop and... I think it's Scatterfish? Regardless, there's only one thing those combine with, and it's for the L+ (essential for sleepbombing, which is usually the fastest way to kill anything).
Also of note are horns (reusable AoE buffs/heals with a chance to break, but there's a skill for that) - not many people use these really (though an armorhorn should be brought for Akantor... because people are stupid and don't bring armorseeds). Hunting horns do everything these can and more, and they do it better too.
Capture equipment is essential but you probably already have the two traps and tranq bomb recipes?
The final thing that comes to mind is ammo, but this is mainly relevant for breaking the ammo limit via mid-hunt combines (this is not remotely reasonable for some ammo types though) and getting a few particularly rare types (like Dragon S... which is cool but impractical due to limits on load).
Edit: Also, you want charms and talons, but those are HR and higher mainly. A lot of the less common items (like horns) are far more useful when you run SnS due to it being able to use items without sheathing; other weapons are just too slow at it to be putting them away left and right to throw out buffs. As a result, SnS and HH are the main weapon types for group support (I guess you can technically do it with bowguns, but... it doesn't work well)
I can just figure out/discover unknown combos through the combo list. Thank god.
Yes, I am that lazy.
Thank you, I didn't know I'm supposed to select the ?????? things.
I tried to do my first capture quest. The moment I set a trap down, the raptor moves to a new area and it doesn't let me plant a second trap. Fucking bullshit.
EDIT - Well I reloaded and accomplished it.

There's a pretty long timer on traps but it does eventually reset.
I recommend beating the monster so badly it tries to take a nap, then putting a trap juuuust outside its hitbox and whacking it in the face relatively softly, just to be sure it's under the capture threshold.

Damn. Kecha armor looks awesome but its skills sound so bad.
Still want to make it though even if I just wear it while dicking around and gathering.

I made it to HR Rank 2, and I made it to the Island.
I'm currently experimenting with weapons other than my beloved Charge Blade. It is physically painful to use the Light Bowgun, constantly steering with the New DS camera nub.

Most of your aiming should probably be just tapping L, to be honest. You only need the nub to angle up for weak points.
The Youtube video convinced me the Heavy Bowgun is where its at, and I can produce Normal Lvl 2 bullets at this point. Everything else is Lvl 1 at the moment.
EDIT: And there's one other little thing: upon equipping it, my character got naked. What are the terms of equipping a Heavy Bowgun? Is there a weight mechanic?

gunners (heavy bowgun, light bowgun, bow and arrow) can only equip gunner armors
gunners (heavy bowgun, light bowgun, bow and arrow) can only equip gunner armors
you probably have all blademaster armors
gunner armor has higher ele res and less defense
Yes. It has very marginally better ele res (the same monster's set you'll be 5 points higher on each element in gunner gear, which is... 5% reduction), and dramatically lower defense (ahahaha... yeah, there are things that will just obliterate you in G rank... this is true of any armor though. Dalamadur hyper beams!)
panic dive is a gunner's best friend. in my couple hundred hunts with a LBG/HBG, the full 150 health healthbar might as well just be 2 segments, full and oh god you need to potion right now. which is why fleet feet is one of my favorite gunner skills. evade extender and damage up yes please.
I decided to come back a bit to this game and holy crap am I rusty. I just got carted by a Zamtrios! I bring dishonor upon me, my family, and my cow.
I should complete the cycle of sucking and try re-getting Lance. But I'm noticing I don't have any Guard armors in this game. Should see about fixing that.
I highly recommend evade extender with Bowguns. It's a great mobility skill and will generally allow you to stay out of the monster's paths a lot easier.
Mostly just huntin' monsters.

Yeah, so I have no idea what armor to make for lancing. Gotta have Guard and Guard Up for proper countering and shielding stuff without getting knocked all the way to Kansas, so at least one of those has to be in the armor set so I can gem in the other. But I'm not going to go around in Gravios armor.
Guess I could bite the bullet and farm for days to get the Artian set? Uggggh.
Bluh. This was my first MH. I put in about 72 hours before putting it down.
I tried to come back this weekend and I just can't remember ANYTHING. I can't remember how to fight, I can't remember how I set up items. I can't remember if I have potions.
I know the appeal is partially the complexity, but I really hit a wall without some basic quality of life stuff. Like inventory sorting. Managing the inventory sucks ass. I was positive I had a lance somewhere, but couldn't find it in the mess that is the inventory system.
The auto-sort works perfectly fine for weapons. It sorts all weapons by type in your stash, and then inside each type by rarity. So if what you're missing is a lance, go to the equip screen, and just hit X and accept. All your weapons will be at the beginning of the inventory.

Surprisingly few monsters require Guard Up. You need it for the various hyper beams (Gravios, etc.) and very little else.

Hrm. Last time I lanced was in Unite, where Guard Up was rather welcome (and even so, I tended to evade lance more. With the new, much more fluid and less blocky animations of most monsters, I don't know if I have the balls the evade lance again). But then I have straight up zero idea of what to make. Guard I'm probably going to need to gem in anyway, because it seems like the only armors that give Guard in G-Rank are, like, Gravios and Barroth, and I don't hate my time enough to farm Gravios yet :P.

Gravios is fun! Plesioth LBG, some waterS and collect your free kills. And side hopping through the laser between shots is the most satisfying thing.

Gravios aren't even THAT bad in multiplayer if people stay on them, honestly. And I say this as a guy who made a Guard Up suit just so he could block Black Gravios beams.

Thankfully, Agnaktor is in Generations, so that's another beam spammer.

Well I just killed a Nescrilla for the first time and I have a near full Nescrilla set now. Unfortunately when I realized there were plenty of guns to forge, the latest one was...the Nescrilla one.
Heavy Bowguns seem more to be multiplayer thing so now I'm trying to hunt another one down online with the standard Bone Gun with some better ammos.
I've been thinking about what monsters I'd be happy to never see again. I'm wondering, does anyone love Tetsucabra? I mostly just remember the thing being a punching bag. It wasn't unfun, but I'm thinking that there would be a ton of better options to fill its role.

Tetsu's fine, and along with Zam is one of only two Amphibians.

Agreed. Zam's mechanics are just too unique.
Tetsu is basically the Barroth of this generation, which is fine. Of those two I think I'd actually rather fight Tetsu, but only because being mudded is annoying.
Gore Magala deserves a ton of credit for just letting you fight a dragon. No constant flapping around, no wingarms, no endgame requirements, just pure, simple dragonness.
