I'm not sure how to feel about how the only black character in Diablo 3 is missing in Diablo Immortal. I mean, on one hand, it was a rather racist caricature. On the other hand, I have a feeling they don't want a black character in a game that was probably made for the Asian market.
This was literally my first reaction to the trailer. I was like, "really? They're gonna cut the WD? Hmm, I WONDER WHAT'S DIFFERENT ABOUT HIM?!"

Look, demographically speaking, lots of people are scared of spiders.
Demographically speaking, lots of people are Chinese.
Are these two facts related to the fact that the class that throws jars full of spiders as an attack was no where to be seen? Probably not.
Maybe Activision-Blizzard has finally earned their Activision title?
If there's one positive about this, it's that it's getting harder and harder every day for astroturfers and ultra-denialists to shout from the rooftops that Activision still somehow has no influence over Blizzard's direction despite being merged for a decade now.

I haven’t seen this mentioned yet I think. You know that trailer with the few hundred k downvotes? Yeah they took it down and reuploaded it.
Chalk this up to yet another “did they think this through “

Does that really matter? Once tempers die down after the initial furor, you would probably get a more accurate and honest assessment of how much people like the trailer.

Eh, I think that removes agency from Blizzard itself. I mean, Blizzard has always been about the long-tail of support on their games. It was a pretty seamless transition into the games-as-service model for them.

The original trailer is still there, they didn't take it down. They're using regional trailers in the Battle.net client for age rating system (and maybe other) reasons.

One would hope, but just on the last page alone there were 3, so ¯\_(ツ)_/¯
The narrative typically has gone from "blizzard won't be influenced" to "activision isn't that bad!"
Internet
Broadband internet connection. LAN play requires a TCP/IP connection.
Resolution
800 x 600 (1024 x 786 for Windows 8) The game requires a minimum resolution of 640 x 480
Officially the unluckiest CCG player ever.

Have we seen both genders of any of the classes shown off in Immortal? I'm wondering if they might be gender locked.
They're adding gender options to the heros in War3's multiplayer, so hopefully they're still there.
If Blizzard was doing Immortal, I'd agree with you. But who knows with NetEase.
My thoughts exactly. Gender locking classes (or even races) is very common in Asian MMOs and moreso in ARPGs.
The characters in Diablo Immortal are locked to set builds and they've said that they'll add more characters/builds down the line. So, a female demon hunter might be all about arrow attacks, and later they'll add a male demon hunter who is more trap focused.
I really hated how they hyped up Blizzcon with multiple projects in the works, then told fans not to have high expectations because making evil games take longer.
But what could be more evil than a microtransaction-laden mobile game?

I don't see the need for a Warcraft 3 remaster. The original graphics are charming enough to have withstood the years, I think.
No, the original graphics are terrible and have aged like a carton of milk in a hot swamp.
Do we know if they're redoing the cinematics as well as the in game graphics? I remember hearing about some disappointment with the the StarCraft remaster that the cutscenes were the same ones from the original.

Well, they redid at least one of them.

Hot take: Warcraft III graphics are some of the first 3D graphics that have held up. Earlier games like Tomb Raider, Goldeneye, Ocarina of Time, Final Fantasy VII, etc, all look like not so much like ass but rather like something shat out of an orc's butt, but somehow even less aesthetically pleasing. Warcraft III came late enough into the 3D era that it's pretty much fine. Part of that is style, part of that is that it came late enough that 3D graphics were finally on-par with pixel art.
Civics is not a consumer product that you can ignore because you don’t like the options presented.
I think Blizzard's biggest mistake is that they neglected to consider that they've never made a mobile game before, excluding Hearthstone, and so they don't have an audience of mobile gamers. Quite the opposite when you're looking at the people who attend Blizzcon and thus are devoted fans of PC/console gaming (mostly PC). Not that they can't expand into mobile games, but they should not have expected a positive reaction at Blizzcon.
I'm sure there are some execs that are looking at that exact situation and going "but look at that huge untapped market we can get into our ecosystem!"
This whole situation has echoes of XCOM where they came out and said "Hey guys guess what we're reviving a old series untouched for years!" and then rolled the trailer for 60s covershooter XCOM instead of what people wanted.
Then later on it leaked that Firaxis was going to be making what people really wanted and the outrage mostly dissipated.

i'm concerned that this post suggests the default reaction when presented with a game not for you is hostility rather than indifference
When it was hyped and everyone was told that they had multiple diablo projects and all you get is a reskinned phone game , then yeah you kinda deserve the vitriol you get. They had to have known , there is no way there head is that far up their own ass.
I think that the “you all have phones, don’t you?” line really didn’t help. As one response put it, “we all have microwaves too, but we don’t use them to cook steak.”

They didn't hype it. They did the exact opposite and told people while they are working on multiple Diablo projects, they are not going to announce them during this blizcon. The biggest thing they committed to for this blizcon was "some Diablo-related news".

And even with purposefully lowered expectations they managed to disappoint people, which I think is pretty funny
Edit best moment of this blizzcon opening ceremony is still the dead silence in response to the azerite applause line

I bought War3 classic a few months back because despite playing the shit out of multiplayer back in its day, I never went through most of the campaigns.
It has not aged well. The cinematics, especially, are rough.
The model renders they showed at the panel looked great. The gameplay footage looked.....okay. The animation looked bad, though, in my opinion. And the blocky geometric terrain is still just that.

That's why Valve don't even make a vague kinda-reference to Halflife, or anything to do with the number after 2.
Just saying "We're doing something [franchise] related" leads to gaming sites with headlines like "[franchise] sequel confirmed to be in development, expected to be exclusive to whichever console's getting the most clicks at the moment", then they clarify that they just meant a t-shirt design.
The problem was less the hype and more the lack of anything else. If this had been announced and then, like. Starcraft 3 got dropped or something afterwords, it would be whatever.
But there was basically nothing but some small updates and so Diablo Mobile edition ends up as the centre-piece announcement and it just can't carry that banner. So you get disappointment.
There was no Blizzcon for 2006 and 2012. If their development tempo leaves them light on meaningful content for their core audience every six years, perhaps Blizzard should have followed precedent in 2018?

Which isn't a problem imo. Blizzcon is significantly more than the opening announcements nowadays

Diablo Immortal sounds dumb, but then I haven't really liked Diablo since Diablo 2.
All this talk of loot boxes and micro-transactions and games-as-services and the death of single player is really starting to bum me out.
Can't we just go back to the PS2 years? Can't it just be early 2000's forever?
oh shit i love hearthstone

Warcraft 3 has arguably aged significantly worse than Brood War or Diablo 2 despite being newer.
I really don't see it.
The game looks fine to me.
And while the aesthetics differ from Brood War or Diablo 2, it certainly doesn't look worse than those games.
