Honestly, and maybe WoW spoiled, crafting in this game seems really grindy, even by TBC WoW standards (don't know if Vanilla was worse). So I can only imagine how bad scribing is.
Also think I'll limit how often I do shatterer these days. People are starting to be real assholes there. I suspect most of the worst offenders probably don't have gliding or bother gliding, so they don't grasp how fucking obnoxious it can be sometimes to do that part of the fight, when you have bugs and stupid ass design decisions. I still boggle at what the fuck Anet was thinking when they opted for a super small graphic to tell people they need to dodge, which is also obscured by every fucking thing on the screen. Decided you needed to hit space bar to deploy the glider because I guess people might be using the pads to get to shatterer (I mean I know the teq ones don't kill you upon landing, but I don't know if that's the case for the shatterer ones). Oh, and shatter can target you mid-launch apparently. There is also definitely some glider skill lag, which makes dodging harder than it needs to be; especially, when it's at one of the times the break bar appears; especially, with a huge group of players hitting the space 1-10 times. So I totally get why it's really hard for some maps to break the break bar at any point in the fight.
Eh, crafting just isn't that interesting. Scribing was a decent attempt at fixing that, if you take the cost of equation.
Cept that you can't do that cuz it's freaking expensitve as all hell, like an entirely new level of grind - like, on a geometric scale more expensive than every other crafting profession. Starts off requiring the amount of cash you'd need to 0-400 any other profession just to get to 75, then by the end of it you need that amount of cash just to go up a single point. Poor @ky13
I said it on chat one day, and I'll say it again here: I wish once people saw how terrible it was going to be, the community should have just stopped trying.
My Necromancer has Scribing just because I like having one of each crafting discipline, so yesterday for shits n giggles I decided to make the first tier of Scribing backpack and
/stares at Resonating Sliver requirements
/stares at other material requirements
why
@ky13 I'm so sorry we made you do this, this is all bullshit. Everything in this crafting profession is bullshit.
In unrelated news, yesterday I also hopped into Eternal Battlegrounds for... again, shits n giggles, and ran into a bunch of people who invited me to join the Fort Aspenwood Teamspeak channel, and... that was actually a super good time! We roamed around and punched some keeps and made TC angry and it felt almost like old times. Gyro Engineer is actually really good and I feel an underutilized class in WvW -- Defense Field, Purge Gyro, and, of course, Sneak Gyro are all really useful for getting your melee dudes safely up to a front line as they prevent Rangers and such from plinking everyone down before you arrive. I am kind of surprised that there aren't more gyro engineers in WvW, but I think that's mostly just because there's not a lot of people in WvW period, AND not a lot of people play engineers (unless it's for raids)
I play an engineer! Because I am Bad At Videogames I only have one strategy for multiple enemies, which is to plonk down every turret I have and then sit in the middle toasting things with a flamethrower. I call this "the house of pain".
Every time I do it I quietly hum the opening sting from "Jump Around".
Patch up. PVP leagues are back. There's a new glider in the gemstore and I may have to buy this one too gdi bc I like it much better than the hawk wings. Anyway.

So I've got a buddy I'm going to play some GW2 with tonight. I always talk about it since GW2 is by far my favorite mmo, but he's tried it a few times with me and it just doesn't click for him. He's tried a guardian and ranger thus far.
I don't think I've really articulated well all the stuff there is to do in the game, so all he's really seen is running a zone from heart to heart and doing quests and sometimes an event. I think we did the fire ele once as well.
Do you guys have any suggestions on ideas for something we could do that might impress him? Or maybe just your favorite things about the game.
The complex jumping puzzles are my jam but he's not super into those. I'm just trying to find a way for him to see what I (and many of you guys) see in GW2.
My very thoughts at first! We basically just did his personal story. He picked both a race and class he liked, and I showed him some of the other starter zones. I'm not sure why he's such a hard sell on the game, but I keep trying.
The personal story was one of his favorite parts though, I know that at least.
Sure the first 2 points look like they could be legit. But then it just goes into a wank about player housing and a whole new progression system which is stolen from other games.
Just hit 80 on my second character, a guardian, woo hoo!
Now does anyone have advice on what ascended trinkets & rings I should get? Or should I go with set 1 for PvE, set 2 if I want to do PvP, etc? The stat system and what the overall meta of the game is regarding prioritizing power over toughness or vice versa has always confused me a bit.
PvP itself has a different gearset entirely, so don't worry about that - you can just pick which stats you wanna run going into there.
PvE and WvW are different beasts entirely. For PvE, the "meta" revolves around maximizing your character's potential damage through power, precision, ferocity and condition damage, while leaving mitigation stats such as toughness or vitality alone. If you're new to a game or particular encounter, it's good to have those stats around until you're familiar enough with the mechanics, then switch in damage gear as you're more comfortable with things. As to what direction to go within damage stats, it depends on the class and, more importantly, what you wanna do with the class. The main exception is raiding, which puts more emphasis on support roles - if you're a druid, a healing role in raids is viable which means get some healing power in there, and if you're a chronomancer, then you're expected to boon share which means get those boon duration stats in there. If you're a tank... eh, depends on the raid. You mainly need more toughness than the rest of the group to succeed, but if you're having trouble staying up or the druid is focusing you too much, then stepping up your tank stats may help.
As for WvW, it's primarily dependent on what you want to do. Safe bet for a new person jumping into WvW is to go extra tanky, focus on Soldier's or Knight's gear, then spec out as you find a niche you're comfortable with. Roamers tend to go heavier on damage as they tend to gank more often, scouts tend to focus on tank stats to survive damage spikes and roamers as they travel around the map, and if you stick with the zerg, then you mix things up depending on if you're a part of the artillery, on the front lines, or keeping the group up.

If you don't have HoT then you're limited to ones that don't involve Dragonhunter, so pay attention to that when you look at these. Obviously you don't need to worry about Conquest (sPvP) when choosing gear for PvE. I'd say look at Fractal for generic PvE and GvG if you want WvW ("meta" only matters in groups so there aren't any solo builds listed).
Thanks for the clarification. I do have HoT, and I'm excited to try out the Dragonhunter with a greatsword, which seems to be a good weapon set for PvP as well. So generally it looks like selecting armor/trinkets with Berzerker attributes is still the best way to go for PvE, at least at the level I'm at right now.
I also just discovered the brewmaster collection and the Ambrosia exotic focus, which I really really want.
If you're REALLY interested I would be happy to load up GW1 and run it with you on Normal Mode if you want a refresher but keep in mind I'm really bad at GW1. You'll laugh at me and my ineffectual Monk skills.
I like reviewing the mission because it highlights her Facets. Skip to 24:20 if you just want to skip to Glint herself, though.
I hope that's helpful. It's all I could find on short notice... there IS more lore out and about, but tracking down ambient NPC conversations is a pain in the butt I *think* the Zephyrites had some words about her... and I know there's plaques around Tarir that speak of her relationship with the Forgotten (how the Forgotten first freed her from Kralkatorrik's control, I think?) among other things. But I haven't found transcripts of that stuff yet.

Thanks both! (if you were wondering.... Gold and I are naming our wedding tables after dragons with an info sheet on each, need to get printed by the end of the week!)
@naengwen , I'm thinking of playing my Mesmer more often, mostly in a casual PVE / exploration way, and then building Hero Points to eventually get Chronomancer. Do you have any advice on simple, easy to understand Mesmer builds for that purpose?
In a casual exploration kind of way, in the sense that you'll likely be fighting normal/vets most of the time, I'd say go for a shatter build. Domination for damage, Illusions for more damage, and Inspiration for condi cleanse since mobs love piling those on. Then grab a greatsword for range, and a sword/focus for the focus 4 running around. Laser things a bit while you get 3 illusions up, then run up to their faces and shatter. Should take out approximately 90% of all normal mobs in places that aren't Maguuma, then the rest of the time just keep in mind that evade on sword 2, your distortion on F4, and all those super awesome utilities you see mesmers use all the time like Blink and Decoy. If you're having trouble staying alive, swap illusions for dueling and run a mantra build, it's a bit slower but you'll have more health and survivability than you'll ever need for low level zones, also if you slot in centaur runes you can perma swiftness without the focus which lets you try other offhand weapons.
Chronomancer changes everything once you get it of course, but we can cover that once you get there.

Also guardian got art'd
I don't think I've really articulated well all the stuff there is to do in the game, so all he's really seen is running a zone from heart to heart and doing quests and sometimes an event. I think we did the fire ele once as well.
Do you guys have any suggestions on ideas for something we could do that might impress him? Or maybe just your favorite things about the game.
The complex jumping puzzles are my jam but he's not super into those. I'm just trying to find a way for him to see what I (and many of you guys) see in GW2.
Can also try going through the Personal Story with him.
The personal story was one of his favorite parts though, I know that at least.

If it's real, some aspects of it sound really fun. Particularly the idea of the Wilds

Or right now it's at the point where all the developers are like "man wouldn't it be awesome if..." which may be very different from any end product.

Now does anyone have advice on what ascended trinkets & rings I should get? Or should I go with set 1 for PvE, set 2 if I want to do PvP, etc? The stat system and what the overall meta of the game is regarding prioritizing power over toughness or vice versa has always confused me a bit.
I'm in search of some iconic/awesome Glint Quotes and trivia (long story...)
Any ideas?
Popular guardian builds: http://metabattle.com/wiki/Guardian
If you don't have HoT then you're limited to ones that don't involve Dragonhunter, so pay attention to that when you look at these. Obviously you don't need to worry about Conquest (sPvP) when choosing gear for PvE. I'd say look at Fractal for generic PvE and GvG if you want WvW ("meta" only matters in groups so there aren't any solo builds listed).
I also just discovered the brewmaster collection and the Ambrosia exotic focus, which I really really want.
/busts in here
First off, here's a playthrough of her iconic mission in GW1! It's a little long though

There used to be dwarves who served Glint, http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Brotherhood_of_the_Dragon . These guys were replaced by the Zephyrites after the Dwarves became the Great Dwarf.

And, finally, SOME MYSTERIES...
http://wiki.guildwars.com/wiki/Baby_Dragon <= Aka Gleam, we have no fucking idea what happened to this dragon! Nobody has seen him since GW1.
You used to be able to get Crystal Eggs: http://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Egg_of_the_Crystal_Queen but now you can't, because they removed Magic Find as a stat.
I hope that's helpful. It's all I could find on short notice... there IS more lore out and about, but tracking down ambient NPC conversations is a pain in the butt

Chronomancer changes everything once you get it of course, but we can cover that once you get there.
