The ESO combat system leaves a lot to be desired, as a WvW replacement. It was easy for me to get people into BDO, but nobody was interested in eso.
A magician gives you a ring that, when worn, will let you see the world as it truly is.
However, the ring will never leave your finger, and you will be unable to ever describe to another living person what you see.
It's not a tragedy. Any life well lived is worth living.
6667 hours isn't a failure by any stretch of the imagination. I spent a ridiculous amount of money on this game. So did a lot of other people. It wasn't a commercial failure.
It just, like so many other things in life, ran out of steam.
It's time for another game with other ideas to get a shot at that niche. For now I'm playing BDO. It has some promise but if it turns out to suck and I just have to chill while I wait for something to come out, that's cool.
edit: I guess if you asked me what I thought about guild wars 2 and my time there I would say
I will miss it. It was fun.
I miss the game myself. I haven't played since Decemeber because ANet decided to make my fireballs look like tennis balls and auras look like...er well literally nothing. Seems like a silly thing to quit over but it just really reduced my enjoyment of using the skills that were effected, and made me sour towards the game. *shrug* It wasn't really just that though. I didn't like the grindy new zones that made exploration not as fun as the original world was. Ironic given the design of it with all the jump pads and updrafts ect. The pve combat was still kind of dumb / easy because the AI doesn't take advantage of the cool things the combat system could do if they gave the AI more interesting and deadly attack patterns / skills. I didn't like the mastery system because again super grindy. I was afraid everyone was right about WvW dying off and I remember wandering around in empty maps before I quit. SPVP hasn't had the support it really needs to be awesome (maps, modes ect). It's sad, the game has so much potential. UGH!
The sucky thing is that GW2 was the last MMO I liked.

For those of you who, like me, still can't find anyone who will raid with you (or for whatever other reason, don't want to or can't raid), but are also super interested in the lore behind the raid, especially for how it ties to GW1...
The second raid wing has an ending cinematic.
I have spoilered it, because obviously it's a big fucking deal and huge huge huge spoilers.
I will say... I've been looking at some of the comments made by their new lead, Mike, and I am now cautiously optimistic. We'll see what happens with the April update, but he's said in various places things like that he wants to go back to a more GW1 feel (little to no grind outside of cosmetic stuff), that he really feels that the newer maps ARE too grindy and he wants something to be done about that.
So... cautious optimism. I doubt some of my fave people from this guild are ever coming back unless the WvW fix literally shits unicorns and cures cancer ( @mojojoeo you cranky bastard I really do miss you lots ;~; ) but I do think things are going to start looking better soon
Then again, I'm obviously in this damn universe for the long haul. I think the servers will literally have to shut down before I'll leave. No other MMO has really captured this way me since GW2 came out, and I literally worked on ESO. You know what level my ESO character is? Five.
*e* speaking of WvW what gets my goat about that is that I feel like... if Anet is all up in this ESports thing they missed a huge opportunity by focusing on sPvP as their E-Sports. Open-world massive PVP was The Thing that got people into GW2 at launch and I feel like if they'd made WvW their LOL ESPORTS focus like... they wouldn't be competing with every MOBA and other MMO out there in terms of genre. It'd be something huge and different. More like a rugby match than doubles tennis, I guess?
@Lucid_Seraph I actually found alot to like in ESO, even if it didn't hold my attention long term. I would definitely play again if they would add spell crafting. The thing I disliked the most was the class system. I just want to be a spell blade that chucks fireballs and stuff!

I still think it's a very solid game that suffered from a whiny fanbase that wanted it to be Skyrim With Friends. It's just... for me, once you've done a zone, the world feels so static and boring, like, nothing happens after you finish a questline except I guess Dark Anchors.
It still has a lot to love in it, especially if you really dig Elder Scrolls lore.
GW2 was really my first MMO (GW1 is more a Diablo-esque dungeoncrawler-with-friends, while Ragnarok Online on somebody's hacked private server doesn't count at all) so my expectations for Wot An MMO Be was influenced by the concept of Dynamic Events and having zones remain relevant even after you're level 80, so yeah.
*e* Oh, and for the most part, ESO's actual toon creation system blows GW2's out of the water. I'm still so happy that you can create a fat, ugly, and old character.
Let me tell you about the game that has taken some of my time lately. It's free to play, and they do it kind of like a MOBA where they give you certain classes to play free and sell them to keep. Leveling up just unlocks cosmetic stuff. Equipment doesn't matter as much as your actual skill. There's a bit of PvE but most of the good stuff is PvP. You can even duel against the AI ghost/shadow another player trained so it feels like PvP but it's actually PvE.
The zones are a bit small, but environments are extremely well detailed. No need to worry about grinding for materials. No death penalty. And you have your character's max stats from the get go, you just need to learn how to use them effectively. Leveling up just earns you titles and stuff.
I know there are tons of other people playing, but I only ever seem to see 1 at a time. Not sure why.
But yeah, that's Killer Instinct...
But really, last night I jumped into WvW and some random dude and I were gonna take a camp but then a bunch of bad guys came and there were a LOT of them so we ran and a few chased us and they killed us but we annoyed them and I'm pretty sure we made them not get credit for the capture so that felt good

I really like scepter/dagger because of the combo abilities, but elementalist was one of the most engaging classes to learn. Its really amazing all the different things they're capable of in all their different attunements. I wuv my ele.

That's good. I saw in that thread that the tone from the devs was all "Well, do you ACTUALLY want it back? You're probably used to the new time now. And what time should we make it? How about these alternate times?"
And the response seemed to be a resounding "Why are you even asking just put it back to how it was."
Question about money making. I'm sitting on over 300 mystic coins and it looks like the Accursed Chains can be made in the mystic forge with the fewest amount of coins and other materials. Since accursed chains sell for around 45 gold, even if I buy the orichalcum I'll still come out over 35 gold ahead. Am I missing something?

Spirit shards technically have no monetary value but they are very time gated.

I think you've missed accounting for some costs there:
30 off Mystic Coins @ 32.71 ea
250 off Steel Ingots @ 7.47 ea
50 off Ori Ingots @ 7.27 ea
1 off Eldritch Scroll @ 50 spirit shards (time gate)
Total cost to craft 32g 12s
Sell Order Price on TP 45g 87s
TP Taxes 6g 88s
Profit 45.87 - (32.12 + 6.88) = 6g 87s
Gives you a RoI of 21% which isn't terrible. Though these aren't a super fast moving item. It looks like approx. 5 have sold in the past week.

Well, Mystic coins aren't a cost to me, because I'm sitting on plenty. I also have plenty of iron, so no need to buy steel ingots. The only cost right now would be purchasing some Ori ore.

Oh my. Of course the mystic coins are a cost to you-- you could just sell them and take the money. By not doing that, you're giving up the cash you could have had in instead--that's your opportunity cost.
If you want quick, reliable, certain cash from your 300 mystic coins, don't craft with them. List them on the TP for the sell price, collect 97 gold after TP fees.

I see your point regarding opportunity cost, particularly in that steel ingots net nearly 18 gold on their own. Seeing as how that's easily obtainable, better and wiser just to sell those.
In case you're not sure what Bees is talking about (like I was until a few minutes ago) I'll save you a click if you don't want to expose yourself to the official forums.
In the upcoming Spring 2016 Quarterly Update, we’ll launch the new legendary short bow, Chuka and Champawat. The team outdid themselves on this one. This new precursor journey takes you through a memorable experience inspired by a real-world story, and the bow you craft at the end is the perfect commemoration of that journey. I hope you all check it out.
Last year we talked about plans to gradually build out a second set of legendary weapons through live content updates. That’s a big responsibility. We have a team of six developers working on that, who could work on it for years to come.
As game director I have to make tough trade-offs. One thing I believe is that we have to focus on the core game first before taking on additional responsibilities. I wrote in the Guild Wars 2 Design Manifesto in 2010 that our vision was to create a living, dynamic world, where there’s always something to do. Let’s ensure we succeed on that front.
So, after shipping Chuka and Champawat, I’ve asked that we indefinitely suspend work on new legendary weapons. This team of developers will instead shift their efforts back to Living World style content, building new journeys and events for everyone to participate in.
I know this will be a controversial decision. I’ll hang out with you here on the forums for a little while today to discuss it. And I’m always available by email.
Thanks for all the comments. I know there’s nothing I’m going to say that will make you feel better, but I’ll share some final thoughts for the night.
I said three weeks ago I’d focus on sustainability and quality. I want to reiterate the part about sustainability. Be angry about legendary weapons, sure, but how about the recent drought of content? That kind of thing happens when we spread ourselves too thin, and when we let the content development pipeline empty out so we can fight fires. What I think we actually owe you is sustainable, predictable, high-quality content. I’m making a decision that’s painful in the short-term so we can position ourselves to deliver that...
TL;DR: They're going to release the new legendary Shortbow in April, then stop working on new legendaries until further notice.
I'll be honest, I almost forgot about them adding new legendaries. Like, I know the ones that are already in the game are there, but I never really had any expectations for other ones after the initial HoT launch hype.
In other, more positive/curious news, is anybody interested in going through HoT story? And for those that have done it already, is it solo-able? If I remember the initial impressions were that it was, but the last mission is a pain if you're not in a group?

I'd be happy to, my Sylvari still hasn't finished it and the Sylvari get different / unique stuff
Re: legendary weapons? I'm actually REALLY HAPPY about this news, because the impression I get is that Mike O'Brian wants to re-prioritize to fixing other shit that's broken instead of giving us YET ANOTHER pointless fucking grind for a slightly nicer hat.

I just want them to show some results. It's been nearly six months since HOT came out, and compared to the initial launch it feels like we're moving forward at a snails pace right now despite the reorganization, streamlining and general infrastructure improvements they claimed after launch.

Yeah, I am with you there. I'm tired of Reddit whining, but I'm also like, "Guys... guys..........."
I could not give a fuck about legendary weapons. The fact that they're suspending making legendaries to work on actual content makes me happy.
I think it's more about the fact that they had six people working on them and that they felt they needed to shift those six people.
The reaction chain goes something like this:
They had six people on the legendary team? No wonder it was so slow!
They want to shift them to Living World? Well, I guess that's good....
Wait, how many people are working on Living World to the point that six more people will make a big enough difference that they feel it's worth sacrificing legendary weapons entirely?
And how far away are they from releasing it that shifting them now makes a difference?
Idgaf about legendaries either and the fact that I don't have a single one is testament to that. I have other things in-game that are equivalent to a legendary.
I think that moving the legendary team to wherever is a great idea.
My problem is that everything that is going on currently are symptoms of a huge problem behind the scenes at Anet and for me, until Anet gets their act together and shows me that gw2 is worth my time then I will be elsewhere.
This sums it up for me too, mostly. With the caveat that they add in an option to return the skill VFX back to full or something. But that isn't the only reason I quit months ago, I just wasn't having fun with HoT overall.

Last week a friend and I did the full event chain in Dragon's Stand and got the achievement for killing the Mouth of Mordremoth in under 20 minutes. We lucked into a populated server, and my friend ended up putting on his Commander icon and leading the northern assault, despite never having done the event before. It was awesome, and probably the most fun I've had ever had in an MMO.
After the fight, there's a vista on the rim of the floating island area that I couldn't get to, because I couldn't ride the updrafts as high as my friend could. This seems to be a consistent thing - any time we both use the same updraft, he comes out at a noticeably higher altitude than I do. The first thing we checked was whether I'm accidentally flying out of the updraft prematurely; I'm not. Does the lean techniques or advanced gliding mastery give you a better boost from updrafts? The only other difference is that he's using the default glider skin, and I'm using the "classical glider" skin from the gem shop (what can I say, I'm a sucker for wings).
It's more the duration of time for which you're actually in the updraft. Keep in mind that you're still moving forward while you're being pushed upward - if you're using lean techniques and holding down, then you're likely to get higher. Someone without lean techniques needs to circle the updraft until they're at their highest.

I don't know about height, but are you pressing W when riding up? I'm only halfway through the Gliding mastery and I've found that if I press W to try to go forward faster I start draining my stamina even as I'm going up the draft, causing me to not start my flight with a full stamina bar.
The fix: don't press W until the draft throws me as high as it can, then once I see that I've started moving forward on my own, press W.
Basically, the Map Event Rewards for Frostgorge Sound are going to be RIDICULOUS (Charged Cores & Lodestones, Powerful Blood, Giant Eyes). If you have the correct Pact Mastery, you can burn karma to buy Pact Mapping Supplies from Pact Supply Network Agents (https://wiki.guildwars2.com/wiki/Pact_Supply_Network_Agent) that'll give you those rewards instantly. Right now, this is THE most lucrative / efficient way to turn karma into gold, so if you've got the karma to burn, now is the time.
If you DON'T have the Mastery, starting Thursday would be a good week to do the Frostgorge Sound Event Chain, since you get those rewards from events, too.

So... cautious optimism.

LOL, nice, had me going for abit there. Semi-related, I've become a Sm4sh addict.
CorriganX on Steam and just about everywhere else.

That's good. I saw in that thread that the tone from the devs was all "Well, do you ACTUALLY want it back? You're probably used to the new time now. And what time should we make it? How about these alternate times?"
And the response seemed to be a resounding "Why are you even asking just put it back to how it was."
Spirit shards technically have no monetary value but they are very time gated.
Looks like a stealth bomber's wings that are on fire(?).
That outfit, though... Reminds me of some sports that require a lot of padding. Or the Michelin Man, kinda.
I think you've missed accounting for some costs there:
30 off Mystic Coins @ 32.71 ea
250 off Steel Ingots @ 7.47 ea
50 off Ori Ingots @ 7.27 ea
1 off Eldritch Scroll @ 50 spirit shards (time gate)
Total cost to craft 32g 12s
Sell Order Price on TP 45g 87s
TP Taxes 6g 88s
Profit 45.87 - (32.12 + 6.88) = 6g 87s
Gives you a RoI of 21% which isn't terrible. Though these aren't a super fast moving item. It looks like approx. 5 have sold in the past week.
GW2: Tavalisk.9463
I'm actually REALLY HAPPY about this news, because the impression I get is that Mike O'Brian wants to re-prioritize to fixing other shit that's broken instead of giving us YET ANOTHER pointless fucking grind for a slightly nicer hat.
https://podcast.tidalwavegames.com/
I just want them to show some results. It's been nearly six months since HOT came out, and compared to the initial launch it feels like we're moving forward at a snails pace right now despite the reorganization, streamlining and general infrastructure improvements they claimed after launch.
Yeah, I am with you there. I'm tired of Reddit whining, but I'm also like, "Guys... guys..........."
Well, except raids. THOSE are doing just fine
https://podcast.tidalwavegames.com/
I think it's more about the fact that they had six people working on them and that they felt they needed to shift those six people.
The reaction chain goes something like this:
They had six people on the legendary team? No wonder it was so slow!
They want to shift them to Living World? Well, I guess that's good....
Wait, how many people are working on Living World to the point that six more people will make a big enough difference that they feel it's worth sacrificing legendary weapons entirely?
And how far away are they from releasing it that shifting them now makes a difference?
!*#$!^&!!##!
....or at least that's how I felt.
Madness!
This sums it up for me too, mostly. With the caveat that they add in an option to return the skill VFX back to full or something. But that isn't the only reason I quit months ago, I just wasn't having fun with HoT overall.

Once I'm in the updraft, I release W. I exit the updraft with full stamina, but below my friend, who entered the updraft before I did.
That could be it. I'll have to try and see.
Invite sent rather belatedly!
Perhaps we should send them a few copies of this:

Hey, it's me, Teldra! Did someone say "greatsword"? [Eternity]
It depends, I suppose, on how much of the work can be done in parallel.
