So I know about metabattle, but the builds there tend to be endgame-y stuff. Is there a site folks recommend for leveling builds, or builds just for going through maps?

Im amazed that all the male armor is like bare-chested stuff and the female ones are all covered up. That is like a complete 180 to everything else in the game.

Generally speaking leveling and open world stuff isn't onerous enough to need specific builds outside of maybe leveling a mesmer. Stuff for going through maps tends to be pve damage builds with some stuff swapped around for survivability. Like my thief will sometimes use a condition clearing heal instead of his usual one or take a stun breaker instead of a dps boosting signet.

Given that not everyone accrues hero points at the same rate due to not everyone hitting all the map based ones, it's tough to give a specific leveling build. It's more of asking what skills and trait lines to prioritize.

I think it's probably intentional to offer a little more skin for males in the new options, just to balance it out a little. Still, the single most revealing outfit is female so it's definitely 2 steps forward, one step back. I'm also pretty interested to see how these looks translate to charr. I think it would be pretty cool if the kitties had more chest-baring options. And why not, it's just fur?

    All right, fair enough.

How about this then: guides for open world, assuming you've unlocked all your traits?

Kinda in the same boat. Unless you are playing in HoT or LWS3 maps, you aren't going to need a super dedicated PvE build, and even then, after they toned HoT down it's more about making sure you have the CC's for breakbars than any serious rotations or anything. I'd just look for a metabattle dungion/fractal build that looks fun and isn't based on support, add in some survival skills or traits, and run with that, tweaking as you need based on the location or what works for you.

There are some general guidelines that can help.

Basically start with a power dps build and stick with that build's choice of weapons. Prioritize the trait lines and utility skills that build goes for first. Then be ready to swap in condition removal, stun breaks, stability, CC, as needed. Which is something you do in high end pve anyway.

I would not mind some engineer discussion. Or mesmer. Most anything, really.

I went flamethrower waaaaay back when, and didn't change much even when HoT hit. I don't think I'm geared properly for it either (pretty sure I have Rampager's gear... I think).

flamethrower requires some investment to be good, and you need decent condi, power, and precision to make it work (viper is the baby here)

the main strat I've seen and used is to slap down your napalm and try to get your enemies to stay on top of it while you burn them down - which works well against larger enemies

I dunno, some folk say power builds for it, other go with condi builds, while going for both makes it pretty potent all around

but you're gonna be squishy and in close rage

I use the rifle with it because I like rifles, and a two handed weapon makes the most of a power build for engi (your mainhand weapon is calculated into the kit damage, if I'm understanding it correctly)

I've had some good results with in PvP too, if that's your speed

tbh I wish the flamethrower was tweaked around a bit

I'm trying to get an effective WvW build together :\a Right now I'm using Scrapper Hammer with Healing Gyro (portable water field is easier for me and often easier for people to hit with blast finishers; "blast water on me"), the... shield gyro thingy, Elixir S, Tool Kit, and Stealth Gyro. Wearing mostly Soldier's gear, some Viper's because I'm too lazy to swap my jewelry; idea being that WvW needs more survivability. Thus, this is probably a Power build. Thoughts re: better, more useful utilities & traits? Right now I'm finding that I can't dish out quite enough damage to survive 1v1s; I can last a looong time but lasting a long time means dick if I can't do damage.

Reminder: Tomorrow is the Guild Wars 2: Path of Fire preview weekend! If its anything like the HoT one, as soon as you create a character in the Beta slot, you will get a snapshot taken of your bank and your beta character will be able to access everything there. What this means is you need to put anything you expect to use during the preview weekend in your bank BEFORE you create the beta character. Make sure your legendaries and ascended gear, etc, are in there!

Also reminder: ALL STORY SPOILERS ARE PROHIBITED IN GUILD CHAT. Feel free to discuss them in party with other people that dont mind it, but keep the spoilers OUT OF GUILD CHAT. Talk about any other systems and changes, but keep story spoilers out of guild chat please. :)

Also also reminder: this is only the preview for the first zone and stuff, the new classes will not be available to try out. Just the very first zone and some mastery stuff.

also also also reminder: OH MY GOD IM SO HYPED AND EXCITED WHEEEEEEEEE.

    Patch notes for yesterday's update

    One thing stood out:
onfusion: Base damage has been increased to match bleed’s base damage; skill-activation damage has been reduced to compensate for this. This change only applies to PvE.
Torment: Base damage has been increased to match bleed’s base damage; movement damage has been reduced to compensate for this. This change only applies to PvE.

Suddenly a number of condition builds look more reliable.

Nice! I've been a big fan of mesmer going staff + scepter/pistol for conditions, but it's almost always been about bleeds plus a little bit of fire. This make it even more fun with torment and confusion (in PVE).

Time to spend some serious time on some viper's.

I used Rampager's 'cause I couldn't quite get Viper's (too much of a casual player, never liked the GW2 propensity for grinding). It worked fine- also used the traits that made you poop medkits and mines. Might just go back to that, though with holosmith coming, not sure what kind of gameplay/stats that supports.

I haven't progressed far enough to answer my friend, so asking here: Is the story (probably the latest LS chapters) gated by Unbound Magic? That is, can you not progress beyond a certain point if you ignore it completely?

(As background, he's wondering if it's worth getting the UM harvesting tools.)

Definitely not gated by unbound magic. If anything, early chapters get gated by mastery points. Can't really progress without counter magic, maybe koda's flame.

As for the tools, general rule is that they're worth it if you don't have a permanent tool already but shooting for a new one as an upgrade to an existing permanent tool is generally not worth it financially.

The wording on the package confuses me, actually. I think it says it "replaces any existing tools on this character." So if I already have unlimited gathering tools on my thief, say, and my thief buys the UM tools package... Does he lose the old ones?

It would be more accurate if it said "can replace any existing tools." Basically it's getting at the fact that it covers all tiers of gathering tool as opposed to how vanilla tools come in copper through orichalcum types. Nothing gets overwritten.

Ohkay so I bit the bullet and got the game and preorder. Came with TWO level 80 boosts, so that's cool!

Is there anyone who can invite me to the PA guild? I have a TON of questions about what I should be doing now with my new level 80 mesmer...starting with "How can I start leveling Chronomancer and also how do I farm gold for gear because I want that sweet sweet asura cultural armor skin"

It's fairly common for there to be an HP train squad running around. Look under the LFG screen in the open world listings for Verdant Brink, Auric Basin, or Tangled Depths.

Gold will come from the rare items you get rewarded from doing events in the expansion zones. Some, namely weapons people want the legendary versions of, can sell for a decent amount on the trading post. Others you'll want to salvage with a mystic salvage kit in hopes of getting an Ectoplasm out of it. You'll want to save some of those but can sell the excess. Also the runes/sigils from the rare in some cases.

For exotics, assuming you don't need them yourself, you'll want to see if the exotic item itself sells for enough to just list it, if the rune/sigil it has is worth enough to use a black lion kit to salvage it and guarantee recovery of the sigil/rune, and otherwise salvage with a mystic salvage kit.

It's also worth mentioning that the LS3 chapters each give you enough mastery points to cover the costs of the skills they introduce. (Well, not *give* you... but they let you earn them.) This means you don't have to do vanilla HoT maps to earn the points you'll need to progress in living story maps.

Well that was a learning experience. I used an item that lets me port to a party member to teleport right into the last phase of the Auric Basin fight....and got keys etc...but I didn't know what they did or whatever so I left without opening any treasure chests.

Right, I know that now but now I need to kill another Octovine or something.

Does anyone have any experience with the auto-boost to 80? It throws me into the Silverwastes and I'm not exactly sure what to do beyond the events that pop up and hunting around for hero points and getting map completion stuff. Is...is that it? That's just for demo'ing level 80 for that character. I forget exactly how but I think if you use the item again you can decide if you want to finalize the level 80 boost for that character, or if you want to go back to your previous level and then later try the boost on another character.

Silverwastes was a zone that was added before the expansion but after the initial release. It is basically "WvW" but in pve mode. There are 4 castles that need to be taken and then defended, when the bar fully fills up, the boss encounters spawn. It is really really good for loot because it drops a lot of mats you'll need for crafting stuff and sells well. As for what you "Should" be doing, now that you've got an 80 the whole world is basically up to you. You can do HoT, but ill be honest its a bit of a step up from regular level 80 stuff, so it might be a bit rough before you're fully up to snuff on your character and abilities. I'd suggest doing a bit of map completion and getting a feel for your character. When you start feeling comfortable, progress into HoT and get some more hero points and stuff.

Im logging in now, i'll give you an invite to the guild since I forgot to last night.

Okay, thanks, that helps. I'll keep grinding in Silverwastes and then bounce around. Should I start doing map completion of like...all zones? Which should I do first, or does it matter?

Well that was a learning experience. I used an item that lets me port to a party member to teleport right into the last phase of the Auric Basin fight....and got keys etc...but I didn't know what they did or whatever so I left without opening any treasure chests.

I feel silly, but I got 10 hero points???

You use them to open treasure chests to get tons of loot!

I mean that's fine, I'm enjoying myself and farming gold so I can get gear but?

That's just for demo'ing level 80 for that character. I forget exactly how but I think if you use the item again you can decide if you want to finalize the level 80 boost for that character, or if you want to go back to your previous level and then later try the boost on another character.

Oh, no I finalized the boosts, I just don't know if Silverwastes is where I should start playing? I don't have any idea what is really going on, but these big warning signs pop up all the time like WE'VE LOST THE OASIS and stuff and I kind of just run around and try and find hero points? Do I get to the other areas through the Silverwastes?

So you're going to want to figure out some goals now that you're 80.

The Silverwastes are an option of course. They were chosen as the 80 boost zone but not the only level 80 zone. Still, it's a favorite of many players (it's usually active most days whereas the other 80 zones are more sporadic. Dry Top tends not to have an organized squad unless the SAND guild is running something), the mobs give you a preview for the trickier mobs in Heart of Thorns, it can be lucrative following the rough guide to salvage I mentioned, a few collections are associated with the zone, and it also gives you a rough idea of how the HoT zones work: They're very event driven. Verdant Brink's night event is actually very similar with various rally points requiring defense and supply runs before bosses spawn some time after night falls, players kill bosses, and then continue trying to bolster encampments until dawn breaks and rewards are doled out.

That said, if you want to progress on your elite spec you don't want to hang out in the Silverwastes too long. Explore Verdant Brink including the story quests there. You'll need that to unlock gliding and masteries. While there, check the LFG tool every now and then to see if a HP train is running through the zone. Once you have access to Auric Basin, check for HP trains there too, then Tangled Depths when you can access there. Feel free to ask in guild chat if you don't get how to take advantage of a squad, it's not the most intuitive system.

As far as gearing up goes, the soldier's gear the boost gives you isn't going to cut it long term. You'll want to swap it out for Berserker stuff and since your crafting and karma are going to be junk the easiest way to do that is going to be from Verdant Brink nightfall events. Check the event timer on the GW2 wiki and when night's about to fall in VB, look for a squad taxiing people into a map instance focused on the meta event. At tier 4 completion of the event, you'll get a Bladed Armor box that you can choose Berserker stats on. Oh, I think you also get a Bladed Armor hat just from doing the first bits of the HoT story in Verdant Brink so do that too. And gloves for that set are pretty common to find in airship cargo IIRC.

Don't feel like you need to totally gear up before moving onto other zones though. That's 1) boring and 2) lessens your options for other goals and progress. Hero points for example. While you'll be most efficient in the first 3 HoT zones joining an HP train, you can get pretty much all of Dragon Stand's hero points solo after a successful meta event. But that requires being able to reach Dragon's Stand in the first place.

I found that tilting it doesn't work very well, and once I started jerking it, I got much better results.
